Loki and Chromatic both compare rendered Storybook UI against visual baselines, but they differ in where tests and review happen. Loki’s documented workflow keeps reference images in the project and has the team inspect and approve changes. Chromatic is a hosted visual-testing service with Storybook and CI review integrations. Choose based on baseline ownership, hosting, target platforms, CI workflow, compatibility, and current cost—not on unverified claims that one is inherently faster or more accurate.
What Loki and Chromatic do
Visual regression testing captures rendered UI and compares it with a baseline to flag appearance changes. It is useful for finding unintended visual differences, but it does not replace tests for markup, behavior, accessibility, or other quality concerns. Storybook distinguishes visual tests from markup snapshot tests in its visual-testing documentation.

Loki: project-managed reference images
Loki describes itself as visual regression testing for Storybook. Its documented workflow starts Storybook, generates reference images, runs comparisons, lets you inspect current and difference images, and provides a way to approve intended changes. The reference images live in a local loki folder and can optionally be stored with Git LFS. See the Loki project site and getting-started guide.
Chromatic: hosted testing and review
Storybook describes Chromatic as a cloud visual-testing service: it takes pixel snapshots of stories and compares them with baselines. Its documentation covers an addon and CI status checks for pull or merge requests. Chromatic says runs are automatically parallelized; that is a vendor-described capability, not an independent speed measurement. See Storybook’s visual-testing documentation and Chromatic’s feature page.

How their workflows differ
| Decision area | Loki, as documented | Chromatic, as documented |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline ownership | Reference images are generated and kept in the project workflow; the team reviews differences and approves updates. Git LFS is optional. Loki getting-started guide | The service stores snapshots and handles review in its hosted workflow; commits trigger new comparisons against baselines. Storybook visual-testing documentation; Chromatic documentation |
| Execution and review | Run Storybook and Loki commands, then inspect current and difference images through the local workflow. Loki getting-started guide | Use the Storybook addon or CI workflow, then review visual changes and checks through the hosted service. Storybook visual-testing documentation |
| Platform targets | Project materials list Chrome through Docker or local Chrome, iOS Simulator, and Android Emulator; an integration listing also names Chrome in AWS Lambda. Confirm support for the exact Loki release and setup. Loki project site; Loki Chrome AWS Lambda integration listing | The reviewed documentation describes browser-rendered stories and a cloud browser; it does not establish a comparable device or emulator matrix. | Operations | Your team owns the test runtime and reference-image lifecycle in the project and CI. The documentation does not quantify the maintenance burden. | Chromatic describes standardized, parallelized execution and hosted review. Which should you choose?
Choose Loki when local control matters
- You want reference images managed in the project workflow, with explicit review and approval.
- You need to control the runtime locally or in your own CI environment.
- A documented simulator target may fit a real requirement, and you have confirmed it works with your Loki release.
Plan to own the runtime setup and image-update process. The documentation describes those responsibilities but does not quantify their ongoing cost.
Choose Chromatic when hosted review fits your team
- Your team wants a hosted review workflow and CI checks tied to changes.
- Your Storybook version and integration route meet Chromatic’s current requirements.
- Your team accepts the service’s current cost and data-handling arrangements.
Chromatic documents its hosted workflow and integration, but the materials reviewed do not establish a comparable device or emulator matrix.

Check compatibility, pricing, and data handling before committing
- Verify Loki’s package and target support. Its getting-started page lists Node 16 or later and optional dependencies, but the page was last updated on August 27, 2024. Confirm the requirements and platform support for the exact package version you plan to use in the Loki getting-started guide.
- Confirm your Chromatic integration route. Storybook 8’s visual-testing page describes the addon route for Storybook 7.6 or later and token setup for CI. Check the current instructions against your Storybook version before wiring it into a build.
- Review current Chromatic plan limits and pricing. An authoritative current price or usage allowance is not established by the documentation cited here, so compare the live plan terms with your expected usage rather than relying on an old figure.
- Check where snapshots and artifacts are stored. The tools have different baseline workflows. Confirm what data your organization permits in a hosted service and how the chosen setup retains images and build artifacts.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The documentation establishes different workflows, not a head-to-head performance result. It does not support conclusions that Loki or Chromatic is faster, more accurate, produces fewer false positives, or saves more maintenance time. Treat those as questions to answer in a trial using your stories, CI environment, and review process.
If your goal is to capture a website screenshot through an API rather than compare Storybook stories with baselines, ScreenshotNeo is a separate option to try first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents. It is not a replacement for either tool’s visual-baseline review workflow.
