Protect social and advertising accounts alongside the work email and identity accounts that can reset them, the devices staff use to sign in, and the apps authorized to access business assets.
How can digital marketing platforms be defended from cyber threats?
Keep access limited to named, authorized people; require strong multi-factor authentication (MFA), especially for administrators; use trusted, updated devices; review connected apps and permissions; and prepare a response plan. These controls apply across social-media business accounts, advertising accounts, linked work email, identity providers, and the tools used to manage campaigns.

There is no single universal security setting for every service. Platform features vary, so confirm the current controls in each service’s official documentation rather than assuming that a setting exists everywhere. CISA’s social-media account guidance supports limiting access, using individual roles where available, avoiding shared credentials, and reviewing authorized users. It is guidance for social accounts, not proof of identical controls on every advertising or analytics platform.

How does a marketing account get compromised?
An attacker may target a staff member’s personal account or device because that person is connected to a business page or ad account. Meta’s May 3, 2023 description of business-targeting malware gives examples of malware distributed through phishing, ordinary-looking files, mobile apps and browser extensions. It also describes attempts to evade two-factor authentication or identify linked business accounts. These are threat paths Meta reported; they should not be taken to mean every marketing platform is affected in the same way.

Meta reported that it detected and disrupted nearly ten new malware strains in 2023 and had blocked and shared more than 1,000 malicious links with industry peers since March 2023. Those are Meta’s own response figures, not measures of overall malware prevalence or attacks on marketers. The sources available here do not establish a reliable, independently measured 2026 rate of marketing-account compromise or its financial impact.
A different route is OAuth consent phishing. In its September 1, 2026 public service announcement, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) describes attackers tricking a user into approving a malicious application through a legitimate provider’s permission screen. The application may then use the permissions granted to it without the attacker needing the user’s password or MFA. A password change alone may not revoke the app’s access.
How should access and authentication be set up?
Give each person an individual, limited role
- Keep an inventory of social, advertising, email, analytics and identity accounts. Name a business owner and backup contact for each.
- Use an organization or business-account feature that supports individual identities and roles, where the service offers one. Give administrator rights only to people who need them.
- Do not share a master password among employees. For agencies and vendors, use scoped accounts or roles rather than a shared login when the service supports them. Record who approved access and why.
- Review authorized users regularly. Remove access promptly when someone changes roles or a contract ends.
Separate personal accounts from organizational access where the platform permits it. This helps make business ownership and offboarding clearer, while reducing dependence on a single employee’s credentials.

Protect sign-in and recovery accounts
Require strong MFA for administrators and other users whose accounts could change business access, campaigns or spending. Apply the same care to the work email and identity-provider accounts used to reset passwords or approve sign-ins: a protected marketing login is easier to undermine if its recovery channel is not protected.
Where both the platform and identity provider support it, prefer phishing-resistant FIDO-based authentication. CISA’s MFA guidance identifies FIDO as a way to block a login attempt when an attacker tricks someone into using a fake site. A hardware security key is one physical option, but verify that the relevant account, platform and staff devices support the chosen method before adopting it. MFA reduces risk; it does not replace restricted roles, device security or permission reviews.
How can teams reduce device and app risks?
Use trusted devices and cautious installation practices
- Use updated, trusted devices for account administration, and keep operating systems, browsers and security software current.
- Treat unsolicited files, browser extensions and mobile apps advertised as marketing utilities cautiously, even if they use a familiar business theme.
- Train staff to pause before installing software from links or approving unexpected sign-in or permission requests.
Meta recommends current antivirus software and scanning affected devices in its malware guidance. Antivirus can be part of device protection, but it cannot by itself prevent account takeover, revoke an app’s authorization or replace strong authentication and access controls.

Review integrations as part of access management
Keep a record of approved social schedulers, analytics integrations, browser extensions, advertising tools and OAuth-connected apps. Record an owner and the business reason for each. Review whether the permissions remain necessary, and remove connections that are unfamiliar or no longer used. Before staff approve a new app seeking access to email, files, accounts or business assets, require an independent review.

Organizations using Microsoft Entra ID have additional identity controls to consider: Microsoft recommends limiting end-user consent to verified publishers and selected permissions, then auditing granted permissions. This is Entra-specific guidance; controls and availability differ across identity providers, and some Microsoft capabilities require paid plans.
What should teams monitor?
Enable the account and business notifications each service provides, then review activity for changes that could signal misuse. CISA recommends monitoring alerts for logons, permission changes and unusual activity. In Entra environments, Microsoft also recommends monitoring and auditing identity logs and permissions.

Use a written incident plan that identifies who can contact the platform, revoke sessions and app grants, remove unauthorized users, pause campaigns, and coordinate with IT or security and finance. The exact recovery controls and support routes depend on the service; use its current official instructions.
- Contain immediate business activity. If unauthorized campaigns or spending are underway, have the designated owner pause or limit them using the platform’s available controls, and alert the relevant internal teams.
- Secure the identity behind the account. From a trusted device, review sign-in activity and sessions. Change compromised credentials and secure the linked email and identity accounts that can reset access.
- Revoke unauthorized access. Remove unfamiliar users, sessions and app permissions. For suspected OAuth consent phishing, locate the connected application in the account’s security settings and revoke its authorization; a password reset alone may leave its token active. IC3 states: “Immediate removal of the app via the user’s security settings is necessary for remediation.”
- Clean suspected infected devices. Scan and remediate affected devices, following your IT or security team’s process, before using them to regain control. Otherwise, malware may provide a path to compromise the accounts again.
- Review changes and document the incident. Check administrator changes, connected apps, campaign edits and available sign-in history. Record what was found, what was revoked and which owners or providers were contacted.
After recovery, remove unnecessary access and update the account inventory and incident plan based on what failed. Avoid treating a successful password change as proof that all access has been removed.
How to assess a platform’s security controls
When choosing or reviewing a service, verify its current documentation for the controls that matter to your operation:
- Whether administrators can use and, where needed, enforce MFA—including phishing-resistant methods.
- How precisely roles can be limited, how organizational ownership works, and whether administrator access can be kept to a small group.
- Whether sign-ins, sessions, administrator changes and billing or campaign activity can be monitored through alerts or audit history.
- Whether connected apps and OAuth permissions can be reviewed and revoked.
- How agency access, employee offboarding, account recovery and support work after a compromised account or device.
Do not assume that one platform’s role, alert or recovery feature exists on another. Confirm availability and any plan or account requirements with the provider before relying on a control.
