BCU Bank’s Contents Standard lists cover for events including theft, fire, storm and flood, but some useful protections cost extra and policy limits can matter as much as the headline cover. For renters, the key checks are whether the contents sum insured reflects replacement costs, whether valuables or portable items need optional cover, and what the current policy documents say about exclusions and excesses. BCU arranges the policy under its brand; Insurance Australia Limited issues it under the CGU brand.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
BCU’s public pages describe the policy’s broad benefits and compare Contents Standard with Contents Plus. They do not provide an individual premium or enough information to judge whether either level is competitive for a particular renter. Your quote, selected options, Certificate of Insurance and applicable policy documents determine the cover and cost that apply to you.

BCU’s product page lists cover for theft and vandalism, flood and rainwater run-off, storm, storm surge and tsunami, and fire, including bushfire. The BCU policy comparison page also lists events such as accidental glass breakage, animal damage, deliberate or intentional acts, earthquake, escape of water or liquid, explosion, impact, lightning, riot or civil commotion, and theft or attempted theft for both Contents Standard and Contents Plus.

These are summary descriptions, not a guarantee that every loss involving one of those events is covered. Definitions, conditions, limits and exclusions in the applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) govern a claim. BCU also says CGU does not cover actions of the sea such as tides and waves.
Temporary accommodation and food spoilage
If a covered event makes a tenant’s home unliveable, BCU says CGU pays reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation, subject to policy terms. For food spoilage after a covered event, BCU’s current product page states a maximum of $500 for Contents Standard and $2,000 for Contents Plus. These are policy limits shown by BCU, not estimates of typical claim payments.

Standard, Plus and optional benefits
The clearest differences in BCU’s published comparison are accidental damage at home and electrical motor burnout. Contents Plus includes both; Contents Standard offers both as optional cover. Valuable contents and portable contents are optional with either level.

BCU’s comparison page also lists additional benefits for both levels, including contents away from home, storage, transit, moving to a new home, identity theft, temporary accommodation, visitors’ belongings, and replacement keys and locks. Whether a benefit applies, and its limits and conditions, may depend on the cover selected and policy terms. The public comparison does not establish a premium for adding options or upgrading to Plus.
Limits that may matter to renters
Valuables kept at home
Under the default treatment described on BCU’s contents page, works of art, collections, jewellery and watches share a combined $2,500 limit. Valuable contents is an optional way to increase cover for items such as art, jewellery and collectables; check how individual items must be declared and what limits or conditions apply in the PDS and your Certificate of Insurance.

Items taken outside the home
Portable contents is optional and can cover selected belongings such as glasses, jewellery, laptops and phones away from home. BCU indicates cover of up to $10,000 per item unless an item is listed separately. Other limits apply outside Australia and New Zealand. The page lists exclusions including scratches or dents, items being cleaned or repaired, and specified uses of sporting equipment, musical instruments, drones and firearms. Bicycles are excluded while being used in a competitive race or time trial. Read the policy wording for the full scope of exclusions.

Belongings in storage or during a move
BCU says general contents may be covered in storage only if CGU is informed before the items are moved and CGU’s acceptance criteria are met. Valuable contents are not covered while stored. Although the comparison page lists storage, transit and moving to a new home among additional benefits, those labels alone do not establish that every item or move is covered.

How to assess whether the policy fits your belongings
- Make a contents inventory. List belongings room by room and estimate realistic repair or replacement costs. Include clothing, electronics, furniture, kitchen items and possessions kept in storage.
- Check the total sum insured. BCU warns against under-insuring. Its online calculator is guidance; BCU says payment will be the actual cost of repair or replacement if the insured amount exceeds that cost. A total contents figure should not be treated as a promise to pay that amount for any single claim.
- Identify items that may need separate cover. Add up art, collections, jewellery and watches against the stated combined default limit, then consider whether portable belongings need cover away from home. Check how to list items and what evidence or conditions apply.
- Compare the cover levels and options against your needs. Decide whether accidental damage at home or motor burnout matters enough to consider optional cover under Standard or the included benefits under Plus. Compare the resulting quotes rather than assuming one level is better value.
- Read the documents for your quote. Check covered events, definitions, exclusions, sublimits, excesses, exclusion periods, claim settlement terms and selected options in the PDS, Key Facts Sheet and Certificate of Insurance.
Documents, excesses and policy versions
BCU’s insurance document index links the current Home Insurance PDS and Home Contents Key Facts Sheet. BCU says customers whose policies were issued before 20 May 2025 should contact CGU for the relevant PDS, Target Market Determination or Key Facts Sheet. Do not assume a current document describes an older policy.
There is no single excess figure established for every renter in the public product summary. BCU directs customers to their Certificate of Insurance for applicable excesses and exclusion periods. The full policy documents and your certificate should be checked together: a benefit summary cannot resolve an individual claim’s conditions or payment.
Verdict: compare the documents and quote, not just the headline cover
BCU’s public information makes the main trade-off visible: Contents Plus includes accidental damage at home and motor burnout, while Contents Standard makes those optional and has a lower stated food-spoilage limit. Both levels make valuable and portable contents optional. Whether Standard is adequate depends on your belongings, the cover you select, your quote and the terms in your policy documents; the public pages do not establish that it is the cheapest or most suitable choice for renters generally.
