Local Weather Station vs. Cloud Weather API for Home Automation

A local station measures conditions at your property; a cloud API supplies forecasts or data for other coordinates. Learn when to use either or both in Home Assistant.

Use a local weather station when an automation needs conditions measured at your property, such as current rain or temperature. Use a cloud weather API when it needs a forecast or weather data for a place without your own station. In Home Assistant, a hybrid setup can use both: local observations for what is happening at home and a cloud forecast for what may happen next.

What each source tells your automations

A weather station measures conditions at its sensors. Its readings are tied to where the equipment is installed, so siting and compatible sensors matter. A cloud weather service returns provider observations, model forecasts, or both for configured coordinates. Those are different kinds of data: a forecast is not a live reading from your garden, and a nearby station reading is not necessarily a forecast for your address.

Home Assistant documents a local-only WeatherFlow integration that reads directly from a device over UDP, and a separate WeatherFlow Cloud integration that provides station observations and forecasts. Its Open-Meteo integration supplies current conditions plus hourly and daily forecasts. WeatherFlow local documentation, WeatherFlow Cloud documentation, and Open-Meteo integration documentation describe those options.

Choose by the automation you want to build

Automation need Better starting point Why
React to rain currently detected at home Local station with a rain sensor It reports an observation at the sensor site; confirm that the station and integration expose the needed measurement.
Prepare for rain later today Cloud forecast A forecast is forward-looking; a basic local sensor feed may not include one.
Use conditions at a second location Cloud weather API It can provide data for configured coordinates without a station at that location.
React to current site conditions and plan ahead Hybrid Use the local observation and a cloud forecast as distinct inputs rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Do not pick a winner based on a blanket accuracy claim. A station observation answers what its sensor detected at its installation site; forecast precision depends on the available model and location. Home Assistant makes that qualification for Open-Meteo, and the cited integrations do not provide a comparative accuracy test. Open-Meteo integration documentation

How the Home Assistant options differ

WeatherFlow Tempest: local readings and optional cloud forecasts

Home Assistant describes WeatherFlow as “a local-only, UDP-based integration that reads data directly from the device.” The station and Home Assistant host must share a subnet for this local path. Network segmentation, firewall rules, or a host on a different subnet can therefore prevent delivery unless the network is configured to allow it. The WeatherFlow app can show different values because it also uses forecasts and nearby stations, not only the device’s local readings. The integration also warns that lightning detection can miss strikes or be affected by electrical interference, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed safety alarm. Home Assistant WeatherFlow integration

WeatherFlow Cloud is a separate integration. It uses a Tempest account personal access token and provides forecasts as well as station observations. Home Assistant maps the provider’s condition identifiers to its own weather conditions, and the mapping is not one-to-one. A cloud condition label may therefore not correspond exactly to a provider label. Home Assistant WeatherFlow Cloud integration

Ecowitt: local push to Home Assistant

Home Assistant marks Ecowitt as Local Push: the integration creates a callback endpoint, and a compatible station or gateway is configured to send reports to it. The listed supported gateways include GW1200, GW2000, and GW3000, alongside compatible sensors. The reporting connection does not support HTTPS according to the integration documentation, which is a relevant consideration when choosing how the callback is exposed and secured. Ecowitt describes local network use and optional cloud operation; the local Home Assistant path does not mean every companion feature is necessarily local. Ambient Weather: built-in integration uses its cloud

Home Assistant’s built-in Ambient Weather Station integration communicates through Ambient Weather Cloud and requires application and API keys. Do not assume that an Ambient-branded station is local simply because it is installed at home. Home Assistant points readers seeking a local option toward ecowitt2mqtt in Ambient Weather mode or Ecowitt devices. Home Assistant Ambient Weather Station integration

Open-Meteo: forecast without an API key for documented use

Home Assistant’s Open-Meteo integration provides current conditions and hourly and daily forecasts for a configured zone. It polls every 30 minutes, and Home Assistant says its current conditions are not real-time. The integration documentation says no account or API key is needed for its documented free open-source and non-commercial use; check the current terms for other uses. Forecast precision varies with location and available model. Home Assistant Open-Meteo integration and Open-Meteo API documentation

OpenWeatherMap: API key and service-mode details

Home Assistant requires an OpenWeatherMap API key. Its integration documentation describes a free registration-based mode and a One Call API 3.0 subscription mode, and says V2.5 is deprecated for this integration. Provider plans, quotas, and terms can change, so verify the current requirements before relying on a particular mode. Home Assistant OpenWeatherMap integration

Internet, network, and maintenance trade-offs

  • Local transport: WeatherFlow uses UDP on the same subnet; Ecowitt pushes reports to a Home Assistant callback. These paths avoid using a cloud service to deliver those local readings, but they still depend on the station, Home Assistant, and the home network working.
  • Cloud services: A forecast integration depends on internet access and the provider’s service. Authentication may also matter: WeatherFlow Cloud uses a personal access token, while OpenWeatherMap needs an API key. Open-Meteo’s documented free open-source and non-commercial use does not require an account or key.
  • Other online features: Local delivery does not establish that a companion app, cloud history, remote access, firmware updates, or forecasts will work without internet. Treat each feature separately when choosing hardware.
  • Updates: Ecowitt is documented as Local Push and WeatherFlow local uses UDP; Open-Meteo’s Home Assistant integration polls every 30 minutes. Do not interpret a cloud current-condition value as a continuously refreshed on-site sensor reading.

Plan a reliable setup

  1. Write down the trigger and location. Decide whether the rule needs an observation at the property, a forecast, or both. For example, watering control based on detected rain and a rule to prepare for forecast rain need different inputs.
  2. Check sensor coverage and placement. Confirm the selected station includes the compatible sensors for the measurements you need; a gateway alone may not be a complete weather station. Place sensors with their intended exposure in mind.
  3. Confirm the integration’s network path. For WeatherFlow local, ensure the station and Home Assistant are on the same subnet and that UDP traffic can pass. For Ecowitt, configure the station to report to Home Assistant’s callback endpoint and account for its lack of HTTPS support on that connection.
  4. Decide whether a cloud account is acceptable. Check required keys or tokens, provider terms, and whether your intended usage is covered. Recheck current terms and quotas rather than assuming a free mode will remain unchanged.
  5. Test each entity before automating. Compare the Home Assistant value with the station or service source and observe its update behavior. Keep local sensor entities and forecast entities clearly distinguished in automation names and conditions.
  6. Make consequential rules conservative. Rain, freeze, and lightning-related automations can fail because sensors may miss or misrepresent conditions. Add appropriate safeguards and do not use these integrations as certified life-safety systems.

What to buy or configure

For WeatherFlow local observations plus the option of cloud forecasts, the WeatherFlow Tempest weather station is a documented fit; Home Assistant supports separate local and cloud integrations. For a local-push setup, consider an Ecowitt weather station and gateway, making sure the bundle includes compatible weather station sensors rather than assuming the gateway alone measures everything. Exact current product prices, availability, and complete bundle contents are not established here; check the manufacturer’s current device compatibility and package details. There is no universal hardware-versus-API cost comparison: station hardware has purchase and maintenance considerations, while cloud services can have account, quota, subscription, or commercial-use terms. Compare the actual hardware package and current provider terms for your setup rather than inferring cost from the word “local” or “API.”
