How to Stop Animated GIFs from Playing Automatically in Your Browser

Firefox can stop animated GIFs with the advanced image.animation_mode preference. Its Autoplay setting is for video and audio, so identify the type of moving content first.

If you want animated GIFs to stop moving, Firefox has a direct built-in workaround: set the advanced preference image.animation_mode to none. First identify what is actually moving, though—a GIF image, autoplaying video, and webpage animation use different controls.

First identify what is moving

People often call any short moving clip a “GIF,” but it may be an animated image, a video, or an animation created by the webpage. The distinction matters: Firefox’s Autoplay setting controls audio and video, not GIF image files. Mozilla explains the difference in its Autoplay support article.

  • Animated GIF: an image file whose frames play as part of the image.
  • Video: media that may start playing automatically, with or without sound.
  • Page-created animation: movement produced by a website, which may respond to your device’s reduced-motion preference.

Stop animated images in Firefox

Firefox’s advanced preference image.animation_mode controls animated images. Mozilla’s documentation defines three values: none disables animation, once plays it once, and normal allows ordinary animation. See Mozilla Support’s image-animation preference instructions and the MDN documentation.

  1. Enter about:config in Firefox’s address bar and open the configuration editor.
  2. Search for image.animation_mode.
  3. Set the preference to none to stop animated images, or once to let each animation play once. Set it to normal to restore the usual behavior.
  4. Reload pages that were already open, then check whether the animation has stopped.

This is an advanced configuration rather than the ordinary media-autoplay setting. Use the preference values as described; changing a different autoplay control will not stop a classic GIF.

Block autoplaying video in Firefox

If the moving item is a video rather than a GIF, use Firefox’s media setting. In Firefox Settings, open Privacy & Security, find Permissions, and select Settings beside Autoplay. Choose whether sites may play audio and video, may play video only when muted, or may not autoplay media. A site-specific permission can override the default. Labels and routes can vary by Firefox version and operating system; Mozilla’s current support guidance was last updated June 11, 2026: Block autoplay in Firefox.

This setting affects audio and video playback, not animated GIF files. Mozilla put it plainly in a 2019 article: “While it’s true that Firefox can halt videos, we don’t stop GIFs from giffing.” (Mozilla, September 4, 2019.)

What about Chrome, Edge, Safari, or reduced motion?

The available documentation does not establish a complete, current GIF-control guide for every browser and mobile version, so don’t assume a video autoplay switch will stop GIF images. MDN notes that Safari’s Auto-Play control does not work for GIFs, and that reduced-motion preferences do not stop classic GIF files because their animation is contained in the image itself. Reduced-motion settings may still affect webpage animations designed to respond to them. See MDN’s documentation.

Consider an extension only if needed

A browser extension may offer GIF-specific controls where a built-in setting does not. MDN lists GIF Blocker and Gif Scrubber as Chrome extension examples, but those listings do not establish whether either is currently maintained, safe, available, or compatible with your browser version. Before installing an extension, check its publisher, requested permissions, recent reviews, and supported browser versions. The Firefox preference above avoids adding a third-party extension.
