Local Video Storage for Security Cameras: Record Without a Cloud Plan

Subscription-free camera recording is possible on supported systems, but local storage can mean a card, NVR, NAS, or only a temporary offline buffer. Check the exact model’s recording and cloud behavior.

You can record security-camera footage without paying for a cloud-storage plan, but “local storage” does not automatically mean the camera works fully offline or sends no data to a vendor. Depending on the model, recordings may go to a microSD card, hub or NVR, NAS, FTP server, or computer. Check the exact camera’s recording options and its internet and remote-access requirements before buying.

What “local video storage” can mean

These storage methods are not interchangeable. In particular, a temporary buffer inside a camera may preserve events during an outage without giving you a private archive you can browse.

Camera microSD card

A compatible camera writes footage to a card installed in the camera. It is a straightforward option for a single camera or a modest setup, but capacity limits retention and the footage stays physically with the camera. Verify the exact model’s card slot, supported capacity, and whether it can record continuously or only save event clips.

Hub or network video recorder

A hub or NVR stores recordings centrally, often on a hard drive. This can suit several compatible cameras or a setup where you want footage stored separately from each camera. Check camera compatibility, channel limits, whether a drive is included or required, and retention estimates for your recording schedule and resolution.

  • Wide Compatibility — Works with phones, tablets, dash cams, action cams, laptops; includes adapter. Check if your device is compatible with MicroSD capacity. The SD logo is a trademark of SD-3 C, LLC.

NAS, FTP, or computer

Some cameras can send recordings to network storage, an FTP destination, or a computer. These options can make use of equipment you already maintain, but depend on support in the exact camera’s firmware and may require more network setup. Confirm whether the workflow records continuously or only on events.

Internal offline buffer

Some cameras temporarily hold events during an internet outage, then upload them when service returns. That is not necessarily user-accessible local storage. Google says certain Nest cameras and doorbells upload buffered events after reconnection and remove them from camera memory; it states, “For security reasons, your camera’s internal memory is not accessible.” Google Nest’s explanation of offline video storage describes a bridge to cloud recording, not a user-managed local archive.

Compare the storage choices before you buy

Storage method Best fit Check first Main trade-off
MicroSD in camera A compatible single camera or small setup Card slot, supported capacity, and event or continuous recording Limited capacity; card and footage are with the camera.
Hub or NVR Compatible multi-camera systems or centralized recording Camera compatibility, channel count, drive requirements, and retention estimate Requires additional equipment and setup.
NAS, FTP, or PC People who already maintain network storage or a recording computer Protocol support, network configuration, and recording mode More configuration; availability varies by camera.
Internal offline buffer Temporary continuity during an outage Whether buffered events are accessible, how much fits, and what happens after reconnection May upload to the vendor cloud rather than remain a local archive.

Also compare event-only recording with 24/7 recording, battery with wired or PoE power, camera count and resolution, expected retention, and what happens to footage if a camera is removed. Separately check whether internet service is needed for alerts, app access, or remote viewing. Local recording answers where footage is stored; it does not, by itself, establish whether an account, app, internet connection, or cloud service is involved.

What the major manufacturers document

Reolink: optional cloud plan, with model-dependent local recording

Reolink says its cloud subscription is optional and lists microSD and FTP as alternatives. Its support material also lists continuous-recording destinations including microSD, Reolink NVR or Home Hub, Reolink Client on a PC, FTP, and third-party software. Availability depends on the model: Reolink cautions that most battery-powered cameras do not support continuous recording, even when paired with an NVR or Home Hub, and may save alarm recordings only. See Reolink’s subscription guidance and its continuous-recording compatibility information.

SANDISK 256GB High Endurance microSD Card + Adapter
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Ideal for dash cams and home monitoring systems
  • Designed for high endurance so you can record for up to 20,000 hours with no worries (Actual hours of video saved less. Full HD (1920x1080) video only; total hours less for 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video.)
  • Built for and tested in harsh conditions; temperature proof, water proof, shock proof, humidity proof and magnet proof (Card only. See product packaging and official SanDisk website for more information and limitations.)
  • Save more videos with capacities up to 256GB (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)

Reolink gives one NVR retention example: for 24/7 recording on a 2TB HDD NVR, it estimates 8 days for four 8MP cameras and 6 days for four 12MP cameras. The page does not state a publication year. Treat these as vendor examples, not guaranteed retention: actual storage life depends on camera settings and configuration. Reolink’s local-storage overview provides the example.

TP-Link Tapo: card or hub on supported products

TP-Link says continuous recording on supported cameras or doorbells requires a separately sold microSD card or a Tapo Hub, and that continuous recording must be enabled in device settings. Its support pages say storage options and combinations vary by product and hardware limits, so check the individual model rather than assuming every Tapo camera supports the same local destinations. See TP-Link’s continuous-recording guidance and its storage FAQ.

eufy: local recording without cloud backup on supported products

eufy says video recording does not require a cloud-backup subscription and that, without cloud backup, footage is saved to built-in storage. Its Solo Outdoor Cam support page lists microSD recording and NAS (RTSP) recording, each with continuous and clip modes, while cloud backup is listed for clips. The page also says microSD models can record offline and sync when connected to a network. These details are specific to the Solo Outdoor Cam; do not assume they apply to every eufy camera. See eufy’s cloud-backup FAQ and its Solo Outdoor Cam recording options.

Google Nest: offline storage is not a local archive

Google says Nest cameras and doorbells upload and save video in the cloud. The offline buffer described above is not footage that a user can access as a local archive. History options differ by model and paid plan: Google’s video-history page says some newer battery cameras and doorbells can have up to three hours of event video history without a subscription, while older models may provide only snapshots without a plan. Availability can change by device and region, so verify the current terms for the exact model and location.

Checklist: verify the exact camera and storage workflow

  1. Choose the destination. Confirm whether the camera supports a microSD card, hub or NVR, NAS, FTP, PC, or another destination you intend to use.
  2. Check recording mode and power. Verify event-only versus continuous recording, and whether the camera’s battery, wired, or PoE design supports the mode you want.
  3. Confirm capacity limits. Check the manufacturer’s supported card or drive size and compatibility for that model. Do not assume one card capacity or type fits all cameras.
  4. Estimate retention. Ask how many days the chosen resolution, number of cameras, and schedule are expected to retain, and whether recordings overwrite older footage.
  5. Separate storage from access. Find out whether live viewing, alerts, playback, account login, or remote access requires internet or a vendor service.
  6. Trace outage behavior. Determine whether footage remains on local storage, becomes accessible after reconnection, or is uploaded to a cloud service. A temporary internal buffer may not be a user archive.
  7. Consider physical loss. A card inside a camera can be lost if the camera is stolen or damaged. Central recording separates storage from the camera, though it does not by itself guarantee protection against theft, damage, or recorder failure.

Which setup makes sense?

  • Choose a compatible microSD camera for a simple local-recording setup, after checking the model’s capacity limit and recording modes.
  • Choose a compatible hub or NVR when you want centralized storage for multiple cameras or longer retention, and confirm the drive and camera requirements.
  • Use NAS, FTP, or a computer if the exact camera supports that workflow and you are comfortable configuring and maintaining it.
  • If your priority is no footage sent to a vendor cloud, do not infer that from “local storage” alone. Verify recording destination, outage behavior, remote access, and cloud-related settings in the current model documentation.
