Deleting several contacts at once is documented by Apple only through iCloud.com on a computer or tablet, and Apple’s current iPhone guidance does not describe a one-step “delete all” control. If your goal is to hide a whole group of contacts on this iPhone without touching the originals, turn off Contacts for that account instead. The steps below cover each case, along with the differences that determine whether a contact disappears from one device or from every device.

- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap the contact you want to remove.
- Tap Edit.
- Scroll to the bottom of the contact card.
- Tap Delete Contact, then tap Delete Contact again to confirm.
Apple states the result plainly: “When you delete a contact, it’s permanently removed from your device.” (Apple Support, “Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad”)
Check the account before you confirm. Apple says that if the contact belongs to an email account, deleting it also removes it from every device signed in to that account. A contact that feels like a local copy may actually be synced from an account you use elsewhere, so confirm the source first.

Delete several contacts at once
Apple’s documented route for selecting multiple contacts is Contacts on iCloud.com, which needs a tablet or computer rather than the iPhone itself. The steps from Apple’s iCloud guide are:
- Sign in to iCloud.com on a computer or tablet and open Contacts.
- Select All Contacts.
- Select one or more contacts.
- Choose Delete Contact, then confirm.
Because these are iCloud contacts, the deletion applies to every device with Contacts turned on in iCloud settings, not only the iPhone you are holding. Apple’s instructions describe selecting one or more contacts; they do not establish a select-everything step for wiping an entire list in one action, so check the total count before you confirm. Delete all contacts: what Apple documents
Apple’s iPhone guidance does not describe a way to delete every contact in one step from the iPhone. The workable options depend on what you actually want, and the table below separates them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Goal | Where to do it | Does the record get deleted? | Effect on other devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete one contact | Contacts app on iPhone (Edit > Delete Contact) | Yes | If the contact belongs to an email account, it is removed from devices signed in to that account |
| Delete selected iCloud contacts | iCloud.com on a computer or tablet | Yes | Removed from every device with iCloud Contacts turned on |
| Hide an account’s contacts on this iPhone | Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts | No; they remain in the internet account | Still present on other devices already set up with that account |
| Remove a contact from a list | iCloud.com | No; it stays in All Contacts | Only list membership changes |
| Delete a list | iCloud.com | No; its contacts stay in All Contacts | Only the list is removed |
In practice, “delete all” means one of two things. If you want every iCloud contact gone, Apple’s documented method is to select the contacts on iCloud.com and delete them there, checking the selection carefully. If you want them out of sight on this iPhone only, use the account setting below.

Hide an account’s contacts without deleting them
Apple’s iPhone guide, in its iOS 27 version, documents turning off Contacts for a specific account. Use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then tap Contacts.
- Tap Contacts Accounts.
- Turn off Contacts for the account you want to hide.
While the account is off, its contacts no longer appear on the iPhone. They remain in the internet account and on any other devices already set up with that account. To bring them back, turn Contacts on for the same account again. (Apple Support, “Add or remove accounts in Contacts on iPhone”)

Removing the account entirely is a separate action. Apple’s guidance indicates it may affect access to other data tied to that account, so decide whether you want to hide contacts or remove the account before you change anything.

Understand iCloud lists before you delete
iCloud lists are groups of contacts, and the three list-related actions behave differently. Removing a contact from a list takes it out of that list only; the contact stays in All Contacts. Deleting the contact from All Contacts removes it from every device with iCloud Contacts enabled. Deleting a list leaves its contacts in All Contacts. If you are tidying groups rather than cleaning out people, use list removal or list deletion. Apple’s list documentation is at Apple Support, “Create and manage lists of contacts on iCloud.com”.

Recover an accidentally deleted iCloud contact
Apple says an accidentally deleted iCloud contact can be restored from an archived version of your contacts on iCloud.com. Apple’s cited instructions do not state how long archived versions are kept, so do not treat recovery as guaranteed. If a contact matters to you, the safest approach is to check the archive as soon as you notice the loss, rather than waiting.
(Apple Support, “Delete contacts on iCloud.com”)
Quick Recap
Choose the right action
- Use Edit > Delete Contact on iPhone when you want one contact permanently removed from the device, after checking which account owns it.
- Use iCloud.com when you need to delete several iCloud contacts and want the change to reach every device with iCloud Contacts on.
- Use the Contacts Accounts toggle when you only want an account’s contacts hidden from this iPhone.
- Use list actions when you are reorganising groups and do not want anyone’s record removed.
