Load-testing software generates or coordinates a defined amount of user or request traffic, then measures how an application or service responds. It helps teams check whether a system meets performance and reliability goals under typical, peak, or otherwise demanding conditions.
What load-testing software means
Load testing is one part of the broader practice of performance testing, which examines a system’s speed, stability, and scalability under different conditions. Load-testing software provides the means to create a workload, run test scenarios, collect measurements, and analyze the results.

A workload is commonly described as concurrent users or requests per second. Microsoft’s Azure Well-Architected Framework frames load testing around verifying a system’s handling of expected user volumes during normal and peak usage. Grafana’s k6 documentation describes assessing performance in terms of concurrent users or requests per second.
What it can test—and what it may not measure
Tools vary in the protocols and systems they can target. Apache JMeter, for example, documents support for HTTP and HTTPS, SOAP and REST services, FTP, JDBC databases, LDAP, JMS messaging, email protocols, TCP, shell commands, and Java objects in its project documentation. That list describes JMeter, not every load-testing product.

A protocol-level test is not automatically a browser test. JMeter explicitly does not execute JavaScript or render HTML as a browser does. It can help measure server-side behavior and APIs, but it does not show how frontend code runs or how a page renders to a person using a browser. If those are the performance questions, the test needs browser-level measurement.
Different load profiles answer different questions
“Load test” can refer to several workload shapes. Choose a profile based on what you need to learn, rather than treating the labels as interchangeable. Grafana’s k6 guidance on test types describes these common profiles:
Rank #2
| Profile | What it examines |
|---|---|
| Smoke | A minimal workload used to check the test script and basic system behavior. |
| Average load | Performance under typical traffic. |
| Stress | Behavior under peak or heavy traffic. |
| Spike | Behavior when demand rises suddenly. |
| Breakpoint | The limits reached as traffic increases progressively. |
| Soak | Degradation or reliability issues that may appear during an extended run. |
These profiles are useful when linked to a concrete question: whether expected demand can be handled, whether a sudden surge causes problems, or whether performance deteriorates over time. Microsoft notes that different performance-test types reveal different properties, so the test should match the behavior being validated.

How to evaluate a load-testing tool
Look beyond a headline maximum user count. The workload, target system, and resources running the test all affect the load achieved and the results observed. Compare tools against the same workload, environment assumptions, and success criteria.
Rank #3
- Target support: Confirm that the tool can exercise the relevant protocol, API, database, messaging system, or application.
- Workload model: Check whether it can represent the needed traffic pattern as concurrent users, request rate, or both. k6 documents both virtual-user and requests-per-second approaches.
- Browser coverage: Decide whether protocol-level measurements are sufficient or whether actual browser execution and rendering must be measured.
- Metrics and thresholds: Make sure you can inspect request volume, failures, and response duration, then assess them against defined targets. k6 documents built-in request, failure, and duration metrics.
- Execution workflow and capacity: Check whether the test can run through command-line or distributed workflows and whether the load generators are sized for the intended workload. JMeter’s manual explains that machine sizing and test-plan design affect results.
- Data and environment: Use representative, safe data and an environment that resembles the system being assessed closely enough to make results useful.
A practical test workflow
- Define the question and success criteria. Specify the traffic profile and the performance or error targets that will count as acceptable.
- Model representative journeys. Build scenarios around realistic user behavior and traffic, not just a large number of identical requests.
- Validate with a low-load run. Check that the script and basic system behavior work before running the intended workload.
- Run the selected profile and monitor the system. Exercise the relevant architecture while collecting measurements, then compare results with the targets you set.
- Review the test setup as well as the results. Confirm that the load generators had enough capacity and that the scenario and test plan did not constrain the workload.
JMeter’s user manual describes building and debugging a test plan, running it in command-line mode, and analyzing the generated report. Its manual advises: “Don’t run load test using GUI mode !”

A load test can affect the system it targets, so choose the environment and timing deliberately and coordinate with the people responsible for that system. AWS recommends synthetic or sanitized production data rather than sensitive or identifying production data, and suggests replayed or preprogrammed journeys. Monitoring the whole relevant architecture helps distinguish application behavior from limitations elsewhere in the test setup.

For teams working in Azure, Microsoft describes Azure Load Testing as a managed service that can run JMeter scripts and custom plugins. The suitability of any managed service depends on the team’s workflow and requirements.
