Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) is an extension to Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming protocol that can reduce how long viewers wait behind a live event. It does so by publishing media in smaller partial segments and coordinating playlist requests, server responses, and player behavior—not by changing HLS into a different transport or guaranteeing a particular end-to-end delay.
What LL-HLS changes
Conventional HLS delivers a live stream as a sequence of media segments described by a Media Playlist. LL-HLS keeps that HTTP-based delivery model but lets a packager expose pieces of a segment before the complete parent segment is ready. A compatible player can discover and request those pieces sooner, reducing the time spent waiting for a full segment to be published.

Apple’s implementation guidance illustrates the idea with 200-millisecond Partial Segments inside a six-second parent segment. Those figures explain the mechanism; they are not mandatory durations or a universal configuration.

How the main LL-HLS mechanisms work
Partial Segments: EXT-X-PART
EXT-X-PART identifies a Partial Segment in the playlist. The packager can publish each part as it becomes available rather than waiting until the entire parent segment is complete. The parent segment ultimately contains the same media as the concatenation of its parts.

Smaller publication units can bring media to the player sooner, but they also increase the importance of correct packaging, request timing, and delivery behavior. A tag in a playlist does not by itself make a stream low-latency: the server, delivery path, and player must handle the parts correctly.
Blocking playlist reload: _HLS_msn and _HLS_part
Rather than repeatedly polling for a playlist update, a compatible client can ask the server to hold its playlist request until a requested future media sequence number—or, optionally, a particular part—is available. Apple’s delivery directives include _HLS_msn and _HLS_part. A supporting server waits for the requested playlist state, then returns it when the content appears.

This lets the client wait for a meaningful update instead of making rapid requests that return unchanged playlists. It requires server support; adding the directives to a request is not sufficient if the server does not implement blocking reloads.
Preload hints: EXT-X-PRELOAD-HINT
EXT-X-PRELOAD-HINT tells the client which upcoming media resource or initialization section is expected. The client may request it before it is ready, and a supporting server can hold the request until bytes are available. If the hint is accurate, media can start flowing without waiting for a playlist update and then making a separate request.

A hint is a forecast, not a guarantee. Apple warns that the eventual part may differ from the hinted resource, or a hinted part may be omitted if the segmentation plan changes—for example, when an ad break returns early. Players and servers therefore need to handle a changed or unavailable hint safely.
Playlist delta updates and rendition reports
Delta updates reduce repeated playlist data: the server can omit older material the client already has and represent the skipped portion with EXT-X-SKIP. Apple’s authoring specification says services with playlist windows longer than two minutes should offer Playlist Delta Updates.

EXT-X-RENDITION-REPORT communicates the state of a related rendition, helping a player switch or adapt without first having to discover that rendition’s latest position independently. Apple’s WWDC20 explanation describes placing rendition reports in playlist updates rather than requesting each report separately, avoiding a proliferation of request URLs that can make caching less efficient.

Apple’s HLS authoring specification sets timing constraints for the Part Target Duration. It must be at least the maximum round-trip time expected for 95% of clients (P95 RTT), should be at least three times P95 RTT, and is recommended to be one second. PART-HOLD-BACK must be at least three times the Part Target Duration.

These are Apple’s authoring requirements and recommendations, not a promise of viewer-perceived glass-to-glass latency. Total delay also depends on capture and encoding, playlist and segment publication, origin behavior, CDN or cache handling, player buffering and playback policy, and the viewer’s network.

LL-HLS is still HLS. Depending on the stream and player configuration, playback may be able to fall back to regular-latency HLS when the necessary low-latency support is unavailable. That fallback should be verified for the specific implementation rather than assumed.
Server, CDN, and player support to verify
- Server and packager: Confirm they implement Apple’s Low-Latency Server Configuration Profile and correctly publish the playlist tags, partial media, and blocking responses the player expects.
- CDN and caches: Apple expects LL-HLS delivery through CDNs and other HTTP caches. Check the chosen provider’s current documentation and configuration for the exact partial-segment delivery method; support can vary by provider and delivery mode.
- Chunked transfer encoding: Apple’s blocking-preload presentation notes that many CDNs do not support chunked transfer encoding for live content. This matters for an approach that progressively appends multiple CMAF chunks to one parent resource. It is not a claim about every current CDN, so verify the provider’s present support.
- Player: Confirm that the target player understands LL-HLS playlist tags and blocking requests. The sources here do not establish a current compatibility matrix for particular players.
- End-to-end behavior: Measure the actual glass-to-glass delay and playback stability on the intended network, rather than treating a playlist setting as the result.
Apple’s WWDC20 update also describes removing HTTP/2 server push from the approach while retaining HTTP/2 support, adding gap signaling, extending delta updates for date-range tags, and incorporating rendition reports into playlist updates. These details explain protocol evolution; use the current specification and vendor documentation for implementation decisions.
