To make a MOV file work in an app or website that expects MP4, first check the video codec: on Mac, Apple’s rename shortcut applies only to MOV files using H.264. Renaming preserves the video and audio streams; it does not convert them. If the file uses another codec, the destination rejects it, or you need a different resolution or file size, export a converted copy instead.
What changes when you convert MOV to MP4?
MOV and MP4 are container formats: they package video, audio and metadata. The filename extension identifies the container, but does not tell the whole story about the encoded streams inside. MOV and MP4 are related formats, yet a file ending in .mp4 can still contain streams an app does not support.

A remux copies compatible encoded streams into a different container. Re-encoding creates new encoded streams and can make a file more broadly compatible or change its size and resolution, but takes processing time and can reduce quality. The right choice depends on what the destination accepts and what you need the output to do.
Choose the right method
| Method | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Rename .mov to .mp4 | Changes the filename extension; leaves the streams, resolution and file size unchanged. | On Mac, the MOV uses H.264 and you want to try Apple’s shortcut for a destination that accepts those streams. |
| Remux with FFmpeg | Copies streams into an MP4 container without re-encoding. | The streams are compatible with MP4 and the target, and you want to avoid another lossy encoding step. |
| Export a converted copy | Creates a new movie with selected output settings; may re-encode streams. | The codec is unsuitable, the destination rejects the file, or you want a different resolution or size. |
On Mac, check whether renaming is enough
Apple’s shortcut is limited to H.264 MOV files. It does not change the resolution or file size. Keep the original intact until you have confirmed that the renamed copy plays and uploads as intended. See Apple’s MOV-to-MP4 guidance.

- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Find the file: In Finder, locate the MOV you want to use. Duplicate it first if you need to preserve the original.
- Check its codec: Select the file and choose File > Get Info. Check the codec information and confirm that it uses H.264.
- Change the extension: Rename the duplicate so its extension is .mp4. If macOS asks whether to keep the old extension or use the new one, choose the option to use .mp4.
- Test the result: Open the file and try it in the app or website that needs MP4. If it fails, or the codec is not H.264, use an export or conversion workflow instead.
On Mac, export a converted copy with iMovie
Apple points users to iMovie when the extension shortcut is unsuitable. Exporting creates a separate output movie rather than changing the original. The exact controls and available choices can vary by iMovie version, so check the saved file and choose an MP4-compatible export option if one is offered.
- Open iMovie and create or open a movie project.
- Import the MOV into the project and add it to the timeline if needed.
- Choose the app’s share or export command, then select an MP4-compatible file type and suitable resolution if available.
- Save the exported movie under a new name. Keep the source MOV until the new file plays correctly and is accepted by the intended destination.
Use QuickTime Player only when MOV export is suitable
QuickTime Player’s documented video export is not an MP4 workflow. Apple states, “QuickTime Player doesn’t export movies as MP4 videos.” Its export options produce MOV files; for an MP4-compatible output, Apple directs Mac users to iMovie. See Apple’s QuickTime Player export guide.

Convert from the command line with FFmpeg
FFmpeg supports MOV and MP4 as related muxer formats in the QuickTime/MOV family. Before choosing a command, inspect the input and identify its video and audio streams. Stream-copy remuxing works only when the streams and tracks are accepted by MP4 and by the target app; it cannot repair an unsupported codec just by changing the container. FFmpeg documents its muxers and format options in the formats documentation.
Remux compatible streams without re-encoding
For a compatible input, a typical FFmpeg command is:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -c copy output.mp4
This copies the encoded streams rather than converting them. If FFmpeg reports that a stream or track cannot be written to MP4, or the target still rejects the result, inspect the tracks and use a suitable conversion workflow instead. Test the output in the destination; successful command completion alone does not establish compatibility.
Re-encode when the streams need to change
If a codec is incompatible or you need a different output size or resolution, re-encode using settings supported by the destination. This takes longer than copying streams and can affect quality. The right codec, resolution and other settings depend on the receiving app or website; do not assume one preset is right for every destination. Verify playback, audio and the intended dimensions before replacing or deleting the source.

- Confirm the destination accepts the file and that the resolution meets your needs.
- Keep the original until playback and upload are confirmed.
