Lizzie, the Scottish fossil once described as an early land-adapted amniote, has been reclassified: a new study argues that Westlothiana lizziae was a derived stem tetrapod, not a reptile or amniote ancestor. X-ray scans revealed hidden skull and mouth features—including internal gills and thousands of tiny teeth—that point to a more aquatic or amphibious animal than its lizard-like feet suggested.
Was Lizzie really a lizard?
No. “Lizzie” is the nickname for Westlothiana lizziae, a fossil found at East Kirkton quarry in West Lothian, Scotland, in 1984. Its lizard-like appearance helped make it famous, but it was not a modern lizard. A 1990 description treated it as an early land-adapted amniote—a group that includes reptiles, birds and mammals. The new study instead places it among derived stem tetrapods, an older branch outside the amniotes.

The fossil is reported to be about 345 million years old. Its visible skeleton, including four limbs, five-toed feet and claw-like digits, helped support the earlier interpretation. But those features alone do not establish that an animal was an amniote or lived fully on land.

The fossil is crushed and deformed, which obscured important anatomy at its surface. Researchers used X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility’s ID19 beamline to examine structures hidden inside two slabs. The scans revealed a primitive skull, ossified internal gills and a fish-like mouth with thousands of tiny teeth. The study announcement describes these findings as evidence that Lizzie’s anatomy was substantially different from what its external appearance had suggested. What does the anatomy say about how Lizzie lived?
The gills and fish-like mouth support an aquatic or amphibious interpretation, rather than the earlier picture of an animal adapted to life on land. That is an inference from anatomy, not a direct record of Lizzie’s habitat or behavior. The fossil does not establish exactly how much time it spent in water or on land.
The broader implication is that traits that look terrestrial need not have appeared all at once or only in amniotes. Lizzie’s five-toed feet and claw-like digits show that such features could occur in earlier tetrapod relatives whose lives were still connected to water. As study co-lead author Xavier Jenkins put it, “terrestrial-looking traits, such as a reptile-like foot, a weight-bearing forelimb, and claw-like phalanges were not unique features of tetrapods, but plausibly accumulated piecemeal in their close relatives, in animals that were still living in and out of the water.” ESRF study announcement.

Why does Lizzie’s reclassification matter?
Lizzie had served as a reference point in discussions of early amniote evolution. Reclassifying it changes what scientists can infer from its anatomy: claws and a reptile-like foot are not reliable proof, by themselves, that an early fossil belongs to the amniote line. The study also raises a caution about ancient clawed trackways. Some tracks previously associated with amniotes may have been made by earlier amphibious tetrapod relatives instead; the announcement presents this as a possibility, not a definitive reassignment of particular tracks. American Museum of Natural History study announcement, 30 September 2026.
Where can you see Lizzie?
National Museums Scotland says the fossil is on display in the Survival gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. Its collection page provides the museum context and display information; it predates or does not incorporate the new reclassification, so it should not be read as an updated account of the study’s conclusions.
