You can start live streaming with a phone, a computer webcam, encoder software, or a supported console. Choose the simplest route that fits your content and equipment; you do not need an encoder or expensive gear for every stream. Choose the setup that fits your stream
The right setup depends mainly on what you are broadcasting, which devices you already have, and whether you need overlays or several audio and video sources.

YouTube’s current help page says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Eligibility details can change, so check YouTube’s current requirements before planning a broadcast.
What you need—and what can wait
Start with the equipment you already own. YouTube’s beginner guidance puts it plainly: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” An upgrade should solve a specific problem, not satisfy a generic shopping list.

- Camera: A webcam is needed for a computer-webcam workflow. An encoder setup can combine an external camera with other sources.
- Microphone: Consider an external microphone if your voice is unclear or your chosen setup needs separate audio capture. A headset can help you monitor sound.
- Lighting and mounts: These can improve a particular room or camera arrangement, but they are not platform requirements.
- Capture card: Consider one when your workflow needs external video capture, such as routing console video into a computer. It is not a universal requirement for console streaming.
Before buying hardware, check that it works with your computer and operating system. If you need an upgrade, identify the shortfall first: poor voice clarity, no suitable camera, a dark image, or a console-to-computer capture workflow each points to a different category of equipment.
Choose and check your encoder software
OBS Studio is one software encoder option. Its System Requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU for Linux/Unix. Those published baselines may be stale: check the current OBS requirements before installing.

OBS warns that meeting its baseline requirements does not guarantee a computer can stream or record. The load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test a representative scene rather than assuming a particular CPU or GPU will work for every game and stream.
Set YouTube encoder settings and test them
The following are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings for every service. Twitch publishes separate guidance; do not transfer a YouTube bitrate target to Twitch without checking Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines and your specific setup.

- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure streaming protocol.
- Video codec: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported options.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate example: YouTube’s current table recommends 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Treat that as YouTube’s recommendation for that output—not as a universal minimum or a guarantee that your connection can sustain it.
Choose a quality your upload connection can maintain reliably. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing the actual content before going live. Its live-streaming guidance says the platform transcodes streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need to send a stable source stream.
- Configure the encoder for the platform you plan to use and set the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Run a speed test, then make a test broadcast using representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends a private, unlisted, or otherwise non-public test where available.
- Review the preview and stream-health messages. Adjust the setup if the image, sound, or connection is unreliable before the public stream.
- During the broadcast, monitor picture, audio, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Computer load matters as well as connection speed. Twitch notes that x264 encoding uses CPU, while a GPU’s dedicated encoder can reduce the effect on game performance. Follow Twitch’s own settings guidance for Twitch broadcasts.

First-stream checklist
- Pick a route: mobile, computer webcam, encoder software, or direct console streaming.
- Check the platform’s current account eligibility and instructions.
- Confirm that your computer, software, and upload connection can handle the planned resolution and frame rate; use OBS’s configuration wizard if applicable.
- Set encoder options for the platform, not by copying settings from a different service.
