In the source’s properties, Restart playback when source becomes active makes the file start over when it becomes visible in the current scene. Turn that option off if you want playback to continue rather than restart when the source is reactivated. Then check whether a scene switch, visibility action, or automation is triggering the change.
Check the playback settings first
Select the cartoon’s Media Source in OBS, open its properties, and inspect these settings. Their labels and behavior are described in the OBS Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022.

- Restart playback when source becomes active: When enabled, OBS restarts the file once the source is in the current scene and visible. Leave it enabled if each time the source appears should start the episode from the beginning; disable it if you do not want activation to restart playback.
- Loop: Repeats the file after it finishes. It is off by default. Turn it off if the episode should play once. The setting describes what happens at the end of the file, not an early restart.
- Close file when inactive: Unloads the media file while it is hidden or off the current scene to free memory. OBS warns that the source may take a short time to reappear as it reloads. The guide does not identify this as a general fix for mid-episode restarts.
- Show nothing when playback ends: Hides the source after playback completes. Consider this for a one-time episode that should disappear at the end; it is not documented as preventing interruptions before then.
Find out what is activating the source
The restart setting is tied to the source becoming active: OBS defines that state as being in the current scene and visible. A scene switch, a hide/show action, or automation that changes visibility can therefore reactivate the source while the episode is playing. If restarting is enabled, that activation can account for playback starting over.

- Check whether Loop is enabled. Disable it if the episode should play only once.
- Choose the desired activation behavior: enable Restart playback when source becomes active to start at the beginning when shown, or disable it if you want playback to continue rather than restart.
- Watch the source during playback and note any scene changes, visibility toggles, or automation actions at the moment it restarts.
- If Close file when inactive is enabled, allow for a possible reload delay after the source is shown again.
A community answer recommends leaving the restart option unchecked when the desired behavior is to continue while the source is inactive. That guidance is not an official guarantee in the settings table, so verify the result on your installed OBS version before relying on it.

Tell a restart apart from a brief frame flash
A forum user reported seeing the last frame briefly before playback restarted after hiding and showing a Media Source with the restart option enabled. That is an individual observation, not an official description of expected behavior. A brief flash around a visibility change is not, by itself, evidence that the episode is repeatedly restarting during uninterrupted playback.
Handle a restart triggered at the end of playback
A separate issue report describes OBS 30.2.0 failing to restart a source when it was hidden and shown immediately after playback ended. The reporter said that waiting about one second worked; a project participant suggested the rapid toggle might occur before the graphics thread processed the change. The issue was closed as not planned. This is a version-specific report about a toggle at playback completion, not a diagnosis or required waiting period for other versions or mid-episode restarts.

If the episode still restarts
The available documentation and reports do not establish the cause for every mid-episode restart. Gather enough detail to distinguish a file or setting issue from a scene or automation change:

- Record your OBS version and operating system.
- Note whether the source uses a local file or network media.
- Record the Media Source properties, including the four settings above.
- Note any scene transitions, visibility changes, or automation actions, and the exact point in the episode when the restart occurs.
- If it happens only when toggling at the instant playback ends, test with a short pause before toggling. The roughly one-second observation applies to the OBS 30.2.0 issue report only; it is not a universal requirement.
Consider a playlist workflow only if it fits
OBS also documents a VLC Video source with playlist support and configurable visibility behavior. It requires VLC to be installed. This is an alternative playback workflow, not a demonstrated remedy for an unexplained Media Source restart.
