A live-streaming server receives the video feed you send from an encoder such as OBS, then makes it available to viewers through a separate playback route. To set one up, choose managed hosting or self-hosted software, configure ingest and playback, secure the server and stream key, connect OBS, and test playback from a viewer’s side. A successful OBS connection proves only that ingest is working—not that viewers can reach or play the stream.
What live-streaming server hosting includes
In a typical setup, OBS captures and encodes your sources, then sends the feed to an ingest endpoint. The server may relay or transcode that feed, package it for playback, and provide a player or playback URL. Hosting can mean operating that software on a server you control, or using a managed streaming service that supplies some or all of the infrastructure.

Keep the two routes distinct: ingest carries video from the broadcaster to the server; playback and delivery carry video from the server or CDN to viewers. For example, Owncast describes an FFmpeg-to-HLS playback pipeline, while AWS’s reference architecture uses HLS, DASH, and CMAF for packaged playback. These are not the same protocols as the broadcaster’s contribution link. Owncast’s video-pipeline documentation and the AWS live-streaming implementation guide describe those respective designs.
Choose managed hosting or self-hosted software
| Approach | What you get | What you operate or compare |
|---|---|---|
| Managed service, such as Amazon IVS | A channel with assigned ingest details, a secret stream key, and a playback URL. OBS or supported software can send the feed. | Less server-software administration, but compare supported protocols, latency needs, playback integration, service constraints, and current usage charges. Pricing is not established here; check the provider’s current pricing before committing. |
| Integrated self-hosted service, such as Owncast | A deployable service with a web interface, RTMP ingest, and an integrated broadcaster/viewer workflow. | You handle installation, public reachability, admin and key security, upgrades, uptime, and bandwidth/delivery capacity. Owncast’s developer documentation describes one broadcaster and an FFmpeg-to-HLS playback pipeline. |
| Streaming-server software, such as Ant Media Server or NGINX with its RTMP module | More choice over protocols and architecture. NGINX documents RTMP, HLS, and DASH support; Ant Media documents SSL, a web panel, and WebRTC publishing and playback in its quick start. | Configuration responsibility is greater. An RTMP module alone is not a complete viewer platform: verify ingest, packaging or transcoding, player, SSL, scaling, and support for the whole design. |
Compare options on who patches the server; ingest and playback protocols; latency and device/player support; whether transcoding and adaptive-bitrate renditions are needed; audience and egress capacity; security and access controls; recording and moderation; observability and support; and total operating cost. The available product documentation does not establish a universal latency target, server size, viewer ceiling, or price comparison.

How to set up a self-hosted live-streaming server
1. Choose a deployment model and software
For managed hosting, create a channel or equivalent resource with the provider and use its assigned endpoint, key, and playback URL. For self-hosting, provision a supported host with public network reachability and enough capacity for your software, encoding or transcoding workload, and delivery design. No universal server-size recommendation applies across these choices.
Owncast documents a quick installer, manual release, container, and hosting-provider routes. Its installation guide cautions against running an uninspected remote installer as root. Start with the current Owncast installation guide or the deployment guide for your selected software; a quick start is not a production hardening or scaling plan.

- Owncast defaults: its manual-install documentation lists TCP 8080 for the web interface and TCP 1935 for RTMP ingest. These are Owncast defaults, not universal ports. Its proxy guidance recommends securing the web service for HTTPS and notes that OBS RTMP ingest goes to Owncast rather than through the HTTP proxy. See Owncast manual installation and Owncast SSL and HTTP proxy guidance.
- Amazon IVS low-latency network requirements: AWS lists RTMPS on TCP 443, RTMP on TCP 1935, SRT on TCP 9000, and WebRTC on TCP 4443 plus UDP 32768–61000. These rules apply to that service’s documented requirements, not to a self-hosted server. Check the current Amazon IVS network requirements.
Do not open a broad range of inbound ports as a shortcut. Match the firewall or cloud security group to the protocol and functions you actually use, and confirm any proxy does not intercept a route it cannot handle.
4. Secure the admin account and stream key
Replace example or default credentials with unique, strong credentials before exposing the service. Treat a stream key as a password: AWS notes that anyone who has an IVS channel’s key can stream to that channel. Do not publish it in screenshots, source code, or public chat; rotate it if exposed. Use RTMPS when supported and appropriate, and secure the web interface with SSL. See AWS’s channel setup guidance and streaming-software setup.

5. Connect OBS to the ingest endpoint
- In OBS, open the streaming settings and select the service-specific option if your provider is listed, or choose a custom server.
- Enter the ingest URL and stream key supplied by the service or configured in your self-hosted server. Confirm the protocol, hostname, port, and application/path exactly; a valid key sent to the wrong endpoint will not connect.
- Choose output settings compatible with the receiving service and your network. For AWS’s documented low-latency OBS setup, AWS recommends a two-second keyframe interval. That is AWS-specific guidance, not a universal setting for all servers. See AWS’s OBS setup instructions.
- Start streaming and check the server’s own status. Owncast uses the
/live/path with a stream key and TCP 1935 as its default ingest port. Ant Media’s sample custom RTMP URL isrtmp://<SERVER_IP_OR_DOMAIN_NAME>/live; its guide says that example assumes security options are not enabled. Follow the current product instructions rather than copying a sample URL unchanged. See Owncast broadcasting setup and Ant Media’s OBS publishing guide.
Contribution protocols vary: Owncast and Ant Media document RTMP examples; Amazon IVS documents RTMPS and SRT options as well. Do not assume a single protocol carries video end to end from OBS to every viewer.
6. Test both ingest and viewer playback
Check that OBS reports a connection and that the server marks the feed live. Then open the playback URL or player from a separate browser or device and confirm that it plays. Test HTTPS, embeds, and the network conditions your intended viewers will use. Ant Media’s guide, for example, says to confirm “Broadcasting” in its web panel; Owncast provides a browser interface and admin area. An ingest connection alone does not validate the player, proxy, or delivery path.
Best Value
- Up max to 1080P@60fps HDMI Video
- H.265, H.264 high/main/baseline profile video code and AAC/MP3 audio code
- RTMP/RTMPS/SRT/RTSP/UDP/HTTP/Multicast/Unicast Protocols
- Support text and image OSD management
7. Plan for ongoing operation
- Monitor logs and service health, and keep the server software and operating system updated.
- Decide whether you need recordings or backups, and how you will protect and rotate credentials.
- Plan for expected encoding, transcoding, and viewer-delivery load. The available documentation does not support a general concurrent-viewer ceiling or one safe bandwidth figure.
- Test reconnect and outage behavior. AWS documents a 48-hour maximum stream duration and a 30-second no-data disconnect window for Amazon IVS; these are service-specific limits, not general streaming-server rules, and should be checked against current AWS documentation.
Protocols: what OBS sends versus what viewers receive
RTMP is used for contribution in the Owncast and Ant Media examples. Amazon IVS documents RTMPS and SRT as additional ingest options. Playback may use a different protocol and packaging workflow: the AWS reference architecture describes HLS, DASH, and CMAF. Choose a server and player that support the combination your use case needs; an ingest endpoint by itself does not supply every viewer-facing component.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
OBS cannot connect
- Recheck the server address, ingest port, application/path, and stream key for typos.
- Confirm that the selected protocol matches the endpoint (for example, RTMP versus RTMPS) and that the firewall or cloud security group permits the required traffic.
- If using RTMPS with OBS, verify that your OBS version supports that protocol. AWS calls this out for its setup.
OBS connects, but viewers see no video
Check the server’s live status, the playback URL or output route, player compatibility, and proxy or HTTPS configuration. Ingest and viewer delivery are separate stages; the Owncast pipeline documentation describes processing between the incoming feed and HLS playback.
Viewers buffer or cannot reach playback
Check encoder compatibility, available throughput and egress, firewall and CDN paths, and whether the deployment needs transcoding or adaptive-bitrate renditions. Lowering ingest bitrate alone will not fix every viewer-side delivery problem; diagnose the bottleneck across the full path.

Inspect server and network health, software logs, and the chosen delivery design before changing capacity. A safe viewer limit or server size cannot be inferred without the software, hardware, bitrate, transcoding load, and delivery architecture. AWS’s two-input-feed design is redundancy in one reference architecture, not a universal minimum for hosting a stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
