What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can start live streaming with a phone, a computer webcam, a supported console, or an encoder—often using equipment you already own. Choose the simplest route that suits what you want to show, check your platform’s eligibility and connection requirements, and run a private or unlisted test before your first public stream.
What do you need to start live streaming?
At minimum, you need a device that can send your video to a streaming platform, an internet connection with enough upload capacity, and a format you want to share. A dedicated camera, microphone, capture card, or production computer is not automatically required. YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time through video and chat. YouTube’s overview of live streaming covers the available routes.

Start with the device you own and the kind of stream you want to make: a quick update from your phone, a talking-head session at a desk, gameplay with overlays, or a stream directly from a console. Add equipment only after you have identified a specific limitation.

Phone or tablet
Mobile streaming can suit vlogging, hobby demonstrations, and quick updates. Check YouTube’s current mobile-live requirements before planning a stream around this option, since platform eligibility and availability can change. A tripod or phone mount may help if you need a steady, hands-free frame, but it is a convenience rather than a platform requirement.

Computer webcam
A computer with a webcam is a straightforward choice for a desk stream or a conversation. YouTube supports streaming from a webcam without requiring a separate upgraded camera. If the built-in camera gives you a usable picture, try it first; consider a USB webcam only if you want to appear on camera and do not have a suitable one.
Encoder on a computer
An encoder workflow is useful when you want gameplay, overlays, or input from external equipment such as a microphone or camera. It offers more production flexibility, but also gives you more settings to manage. Begin with a simple scene and the hardware you already have. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions explain how to set up this route.

Direct from a console
Modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles support direct streaming, which may be enough for a first gaming stream without a separate capture setup. Follow the instructions for your specific console. A capture card is conditional: it may be useful if your chosen workflow needs to bring external video into an encoder, but it is not a general requirement for streaming from a console.

Usually, it is sensible to try what you own before shopping: a phone for mobile video, a computer webcam for a desk stream, or a supported console for gameplay. A separate webcam or microphone may improve a particular setup, but neither is mandatory for every format. YouTube lists microphones among equipment that can be used with an encoder; if you are considering a USB microphone, first check room noise, connection compatibility, and whether you need to monitor your audio. No specific model or performance claim is established here.

Check YouTube eligibility before you plan a first stream
As stated on YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026, creators must be at least 16, verify their channel, and have had no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days to stream on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before scheduling, because platform rules may change. Mobile streaming has additional requirements; check YouTube’s current guidance if you plan to use a phone or tablet.
Prepare your connection and test the stream
Leave upload headroom
Your upload speed—not just your download speed—limits how much video you can send. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream, and interruptions may break it. Test upload speed from the place and network you intend to use, and choose a bitrate that stays below the available capacity. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and connection guidance.

Run a private or unlisted test
Before a public session, test the complete setup from the intended location. Use a private or unlisted stream if you want to limit who can view the test. Check framing, voice level, game or desktop audio, connection stability, and chat settings. YouTube recommends thoroughly testing an encoder setup, previewing the stream before starting, confirming that it can be accessed, and monitoring audio and video.

Choosing between YouTube and Twitch
Both may be worth considering, but the available official information here supports only a limited comparison—not a claim that one is universally better for beginners. YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console routes, along with specific eligibility and safety guidance. Twitch’s accessible help listing describes a stable internet connection and a broadcast tool or encoder as basic needs, but detailed Twitch eligibility and moderation comparisons are not established here. Check Twitch’s live-streaming help materials for current instructions. Choose based on the device and workflow you can manage and where the people you hope to interact with already watch; no audience-growth outcome can be guaranteed.
