Add visual testing by capturing a stable app screen, comparing it with an approved reference image, and reviewing any differences alongside your existing functional test results. For Android Compose UI, Android Developers recommends screenshot testing to verify visual attributes. For an end-to-end UI flow, Maestro offers an assertScreenshot command; Firebase Test Lab can run Android instrumentation tests across selected device configurations and present captured screenshots with the results.
What visual testing adds to a mobile test suite
A functional test checks behavior—for example, whether tapping a button opens the expected screen. A visual test checks what the rendered screen looks like by comparing a fresh capture with an approved reference image. Used together, they can catch both behavioral failures and unintended changes to layout or appearance. Android Developers describes screenshot testing as an effective way to verify app UI and recommends it for visual attributes in Compose UIs (Android screenshot testing).
Begin with a few important screens and states rather than capturing every view. Choose screens where a visual regression would matter, such as a key workflow or a layout with important content. Make the state reproducible before recording its reference image: the same content, navigation path, orientation, locale, and rendering configuration make comparisons easier to interpret, though they cannot eliminate every source of variation.
Choose an approach that fits your test
| Approach | Best suited to | What the cited documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Android screenshot testing | Verifying rendered UI attributes, especially in Compose | Android Developers recommends screenshot testing for Compose UI visual attributes. Consult its current guide for setup details specific to your project. |
Maestro assertScreenshot |
Checking a screen within a UI-driven flow | Compares the current screen with a known-good image; supports a reference path, optional crop selector, and optional match threshold. See the Maestro command reference. |
| Firebase Test Lab Android instrumentation screenshots | Running Android tests on selected device configurations and reviewing captures with test results | Its instrumentation workflow uses AndroidX screenshot capture and a Firebase Test Lab screenshot-processing library. See Firebase’s instrumentation screenshot guide. |
These options operate at different levels: a framework-oriented screenshot test focuses on rendered UI, while a UI automation assertion can verify a screen reached through an end-user flow. For hosted Android coverage, Test Lab can run a selected device matrix. The sources cited here do not establish a current native iOS screenshot-testing setup, so do not treat Android instructions as iOS guidance.

Add a screenshot assertion with Maestro
Use assertScreenshot after the flow has reached the screen you want to validate. Provide a known-good image with path. If comparing only part of the screen, use cropOn and ensure the reference image was cropped in the same way. The documented default thresholdPercentage is 95.0 percent; this is a Maestro default, not a universal visual-testing standard. Choose any override deliberately and review failures rather than assuming one threshold suits every screen (Maestro command reference).
The command’s core shape is:
- assertScreenshot:
path: reference-screen.png
For a focused comparison, the command also accepts a crop selector; for a stricter or more tolerant match requirement, set a threshold explicitly:

- assertScreenshot:
path: reference-screen.png
cropOn: "@important-region"
thresholdPercentage: 98
The selector must identify the intended element, and the reference image must use the same crop. The example’s 98 percent is a configured value shown in the documentation, not a recommended setting for every project. Consult Maestro’s current command reference for exact syntax and platform behavior before adopting it in a production flow.
Run Android screenshot tests across devices with Firebase Test Lab
Firebase Test Lab’s Android instrumentation workflow supports screenshot capture and processing with test results. The documented sequence is to add the screenshot-processing dependency, register FirebaseScreenCaptureProcessor, capture screenshots during tests, build the app and test APKs, run the test, and review screenshots alongside the results. Follow the current instrumentation guide for project-specific setup and service configuration; the exact dependency and commands should come from that guide.

Test Lab runs Android tests against a matrix of selected devices and configurations. Choose models, OS versions, orientation, and locale to represent the audience and layouts your app supports, rather than expanding the matrix without a reason. The Android getting-started guide explains device selection and result artifacts.
Firebase cautions that screenshot-diff tests may be brittle on some device types and recommends Arm emulator devices for this use case. Treat that as Firebase guidance for its environment, not a guarantee that any particular emulator makes all visual comparisons deterministic (Test Lab troubleshooting and FAQ).

Establish and maintain useful baselines
- Select representative screens. Start with a small number of high-value screens and important states; add coverage as you learn which visual changes matter.
- Make each state reproducible. Fix the test data and navigation path, and keep device configuration, orientation, and locale consistent when capturing and comparing.
- Record the reference deliberately. Name and organize each baseline so a developer can identify the screen and scenario it represents. Approve it only after confirming that it shows the intended UI.
- Review every meaningful change. When a comparison fails, inspect both images and the associated device and configuration before deciding whether to update the baseline.
A difference can indicate an intentional design change, a defect, or environmental variation. Review the image diff in context; do not automatically replace the reference simply because the test failed. Every approved visual change requires baseline review, so focus first on screens whose maintenance cost is justified by the risk they cover.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
- The screenshot differs on every run: Check whether the test reaches the same content and UI state, and whether orientation, locale, and device configuration are held consistent. A stable baseline depends on a repeatable scenario.
- Only part of a screen fails: Inspect the full capture before using a crop. If you compare a cropped region, make sure the reference uses the same crop selector and boundary.
- A threshold change hides a real regression: Restore a deliberate threshold and inspect the images. Maestro’s documented 95.0 percent default is a tool setting, not proof that a screen is sufficiently similar for your use case.
- Test Lab screenshot diffs are brittle on a device type: Firebase specifically advises Arm emulator devices for screenshot-diff testing. Try its guidance and verify whether the result is more stable for your test; it is not a universal guarantee.
- Test Lab results lack the screenshots you expect: Verify that the project follows the instrumentation screenshot workflow, including registering
FirebaseScreenCaptureProcessorand capturing screenshots during tests, then consult the current Firebase setup guide. - You need native iOS setup instructions: The sources here do not verify the current native iOS screenshot-testing workflow or its version requirements. Use current platform documentation for your iOS stack instead of extrapolating from Android examples.

For website screenshots used in visual workflows, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
