LiteLLM vs Portkey: Which AI Gateway Fits Your Stack?

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

Choose LiteLLM when self-hosting, air-gapped deployment, provider-key custody, open-source extensibility and direct control of infrastructure matter most. Choose Portkey when you want a managed production control plane with request-level observability, prompt management, guardrails and packaged governance.

Neither gateway is universally better. The right choice depends on who owns operations, where data may be processed, how much governance you need out of the box and whether your costs are driven mainly by infrastructure or recorded gateway logs.

LiteLLM vs Portkey at a glance

Both products put a consistent interface in front of multiple large-language-model providers. Your application can send requests through one gateway while the gateway selects a provider, applies policy and returns a normalized response. The major difference is ownership: LiteLLM is an open-source gateway you operate, while Portkey is positioned as a managed AI Gateway and production control plane.

What an AI gateway does

An AI gateway is a controlled network layer between your application and model providers. Instead of embedding separate provider SDKs, credentials, retry logic and accounting in every service, the application sends requests to one internal endpoint. The gateway can then:

  • Authenticate callers and issue virtual or service-specific keys.
  • Choose a model or provider according to a routing rule.
  • Retry transient failures or fail over to another deployment.
  • Apply budgets, quotas, rate limits and policy checks.
  • Record tokens, latency, status, metadata and estimated spend.
  • Normalize responses so application code is less tied to one provider.

This abstraction is useful when a team mixes providers, needs a controlled egress point or wants to change models without redeploying every application. It also creates a new production dependency: a gateway outage, misconfigured policy or incomplete provider feature mapping can affect every downstream caller.

What LiteLLM provides

Open-source, OpenAI-compatible access

LiteLLM describes itself as an open-source AI gateway and Python SDK. Its documented gateway exposes an OpenAI-compatible interface across more than 140 providers and 1,892 models in its 2026 product information. That compatibility can reduce application changes when you move between hosted models, self-hosted inference endpoints or different vendors.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility is not identical behavior. Check the exact provider adapter for streaming, structured output, function or tool calls, vision, audio, embeddings and file handling before treating a model swap as drop-in. A common API shape simplifies integration; it does not guarantee identical tokenization, context limits, safety behavior or error semantics.

Deployment and data locality

You can run the gateway in infrastructure you control, including a customer-operated cloud, on-premises environment or air-gapped network. Provider credentials and request traffic can remain inside the boundaries you define, subject to the providers your gateway is allowed to reach. An air-gapped installation still needs an approved way to supply model weights or connect to any permitted internal inference service; “self-hosted” does not automatically mean every model runs locally.

This control suits regulated workloads, internal data-residency rules and organizations that cannot send prompts through a third-party control plane. It also means your team must design network egress, certificate rotation, secret storage, backup, disaster recovery and capacity planning.

Routing, spend controls and integrations

LiteLLM documents load balancing, fallbacks, retries, guardrails and request-cost recording. Virtual keys can be scoped with per-user, team and project budgets and rate limits. These controls let a platform team separate development from production, allocate spend to a product or tenant and stop an accidental loop before it consumes an unrestricted provider budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For monitoring, LiteLLM lists integrations with Langfuse, Datadog, OpenTelemetry and Prometheus. You can therefore keep gateway metrics in an existing observability stack rather than adopting a new dashboard, although the completeness and usability of the final view depend on how you configure metadata, traces and retention.

Enterprise support for a self-hosted architecture

The open-source gateway has no software charge when you self-host it. LiteLLM Enterprise is described as an annual offering sized to gateway request capacity and deployment architecture, without an added per-token fee. Enterprise capabilities include SSO and SCIM, OIDC/JWT authentication, audit logs, delegated administration, secret-manager integrations, IP allowlists, multi-region control and support service-level agreements. LiteLLM states that its Enterprise edition is self-hosted and SOC 2 Type II audited.

What Portkey provides

A managed control plane for production teams

Portkey positions its product as an AI Gateway, observability layer, guardrail system, governance service and prompt-management platform in one control plane. Its gateway page advertises access to more than 1,600 LLMs and providers, with a unified API for routing application traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The managed approach is attractive when a product or platform team wants policy, telemetry and provider switching without assembling and maintaining each subsystem. It can also provide a common operating surface for teams that do not want gateway servers, databases and monitoring pipelines in their own on-call rotation.

Routing and reliability features

Portkey advertises dynamic routing, caching, key management, fallbacks, retries, load balancing, canary testing and request timeouts. It also lists files and multimodal support. These features can be combined to direct traffic by model capability, cost, latency, geography or release stage, but the exact rule syntax and availability should be confirmed for the plan and provider integrations you intend to use.

Canarying is particularly useful when introducing a new model: send a controlled share of traffic to the candidate, compare quality and failure metrics, then expand only when the results meet your acceptance criteria. A fallback is not a quality strategy by itself. If the alternate model has a different context window, tool schema or safety profile, your application must handle those differences.

Request-level observability

Portkey says it records every request and response with more than 40 details covering cost, performance and accuracy. A gateway-layer record can include the selected provider, model, latency, token usage, status, metadata and policy outcomes, giving a platform team a way to investigate a single failed or expensive call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recorded-log limits are a commercial and architectural consideration. Decide which payloads may be retained, how long they may remain available, whether sensitive fields need masking and how application-level correlation IDs will be attached. “Every request” is useful for debugging only when retention, access control and redaction match your privacy requirements.

Governance, prompts and enterprise hosting

Portkey lists RBAC and service-account API keys among its platform capabilities. Enterprise material describes SSO, granular budgets and rate limits, private-cloud or VPC hosting, data-lake export and compliance options. The exact residency model, regions, subprocessors, retention settings and compliance scope should be confirmed with Portkey before procurement; higher-tier availability does not establish that every feature is included in every geography.

Prompt management is built into the control-plane proposition. A centralized prompt workflow can help teams version templates, review changes and connect a prompt revision to the traffic and quality metrics it produces. That convenience is valuable if prompts are a shared product asset. It is less important if prompts are generated locally, rarely changed or already governed in an internal repository.

Deployment and data-residency decision

Start with the legal and network boundary, because it can eliminate an option before feature comparisons matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose a self-hosted boundary if prompts, completions, keys or telemetry must remain in infrastructure your organization operates, or if the environment is air-gapped. LiteLLM is the closer fit, provided you can run and secure the service.
  • Choose a managed boundary if sending gateway traffic to a hosted control plane is acceptable and reducing platform engineering effort is more valuable than owning every component. Portkey is designed for this operating model.
  • Validate private hosting explicitly. Portkey describes private-cloud and VPC options for higher tiers, but you should obtain written confirmation of region, isolation, retention, support and compliance terms for your contract.

Map the full data path, not just the gateway location. A self-hosted gateway that forwards prompts to a provider in another jurisdiction still creates cross-border processing. Conversely, a private gateway does not prevent an application from logging sensitive content before the request reaches it.

Provider breadth and model compatibility

Provider counts are useful signals of ecosystem reach, not guarantees for your workload. Both products abstract many providers, yet the practical question is whether they support the exact models and modalities you use.

Capability to verify Why it matters How to test
Streaming Token-by-token output may be implemented differently across providers Replay long responses and verify chunk ordering, disconnect handling and partial-output recovery
Tool or function calls Schema validation and parallel-call behavior affect agents Run the same tool schema through each candidate route, including malformed arguments
Structured output JSON mode or constrained decoding may not be portable Test invalid, nested and large responses, then measure parse and retry behavior
Multimodal and files Images, audio and documents can have different limits and transport rules Send representative files and inspect size limits, latency, errors and retention
Context and token accounting Limits and billing units differ by model Use production-sized prompts and compare gateway cost data with provider invoices
Error semantics HTTP status, error bodies and retryability determine safe failover Inject timeouts, rate limits and provider failures, then inspect the selected fallback

Do not select a gateway based only on the largest advertised model count. A smaller set of well-tested integrations can be safer than broad coverage that does not meet your tool-call or modality requirements.

Routing, failover and reliability

When LiteLLM is enough

LiteLLM’s load balancing, retries and fallbacks cover the core reliability pattern: distribute calls across deployments, retry transient faults and move to an alternate model or provider when a route is unavailable. Its guardrails and budget controls can be placed alongside those rules. This is a strong foundation for teams that already operate service meshes, metrics and incident runbooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Portkey’s packaged controls help

Portkey adds a broader advertised routing toolbox, including dynamic policies, caching, canary testing and request timeouts. A team can use these controls without first building an internal routing service and dashboard. That can shorten the path from prototype to a governed production rollout, especially when several product teams share the gateway.

What neither product can decide for you

Failover can preserve availability while reducing answer quality. Define which models are semantically interchangeable, which tools they may call and whether a degraded response is preferable to an error. Set retry budgets so a provider incident does not multiply traffic. Record the original error and every retry, otherwise spend and latency analysis will be misleading.

Observability and cost attribution

There are two separate questions: “Why did this request behave badly?” and “Who should pay for it?”

Portkey’s detailed request and response records are aimed at the first question. More than 40 reported cost, performance and accuracy details can make a single trace easier to inspect, provided logging is permitted and retention is configured correctly.

LiteLLM records request cost and can export telemetry to tools your team may already operate. That approach can avoid a second observability silo, but it requires engineering work to define labels such as tenant, product, environment, model family and experiment. Without consistent metadata, a technically complete metric stream will not produce reliable chargeback.

  • Attach a stable request or trace ID at the application boundary.
  • Record selected provider, model, retry count, status and elapsed time.
  • Separate prompt and completion tokens, cached tokens and failed attempts where the provider exposes them.
  • Mask secrets and sensitive prompt fields before retention.
  • Compare gateway estimates with provider invoices at regular intervals.
  • Alert on budget burn rate, error spikes, latency percentiles and fallback frequency.

Governance and security comparison

Control LiteLLM position Portkey position
Application credentials Virtual keys and provider-key custody in your deployment Service-account API keys and managed key-management features are advertised
Budgets and quotas Per-user, team and project budgets plus rate limits Granular budgets and rate limits are listed, with more enterprise governance described

Security is a configuration and operating practice, not a feature checkbox. In either design, rotate provider keys, restrict administrative roles, isolate development credentials, test budget enforcement and document who can view prompt content.

Pricing and total cost of ownership

LiteLLM cost drivers

The self-hosted gateway software is free, but production operation is not. Budget for compute, a database, Redis where your configuration uses it, networking, monitoring, backups, on-call coverage, upgrades and redundancy. Enterprise licensing is annual and sized to gateway request capacity and deployment architecture; LiteLLM states that it does not add a per-token fee. Ask for a quote that reflects peak concurrency, regions, support response times and enterprise modules you require.

Portkey cost drivers

Portkey lists a Free Forever plan with 10,000 recorded logs per month. Its Production plan is listed at $49 per month with 100,000 recorded logs and $9 for each additional 100,000 requests. Enterprise pricing is custom. These figures concern recorded gateway usage, not the model-provider charges generated by your requests.

Estimate log volume before choosing a plan. A single user action may create several model calls, retries and tool steps. Decide whether every attempt must be recorded, whether payloads need full retention and how overage is approved. A managed service can lower internal labor while making usage-based logging the dominant line item.

Compare total cost, not license price

Cost category Self-hosted LiteLLM Managed Portkey
Gateway software Free for the open-source gateway; annual Enterprise licensing when selected Plan charge and recorded-log overage according to the selected tier
Infrastructure Compute, storage, database, Redis, networking and redundancy are your responsibility Included in the service model, subject to plan and hosting terms
Platform labor Deployment, upgrades, scaling, security and incident response Lower gateway-operating burden, with procurement and vendor-management work
Model usage Provider invoices remain separate Provider invoices remain separate
Compliance and support Enterprise support and controls may add annual cost Enterprise governance, private hosting and support are custom-priced

Which gateway fits common team profiles?

Infrastructure-led or regulated platform team

Pick LiteLLM when the platform team already runs highly available services, must keep traffic inside a controlled network or needs an air-gapped path. Its open-source code and self-hosting model allow deeper customization and provider-key custody. Make the choice only if the team accepts the operational load and can staff upgrades and incidents.

Product organization with several application teams

Pick Portkey when many teams need shared routing, prompt workflows, guardrails and a common trace view, but do not want each team to build those functions. The managed control plane can standardize policy faster. Confirm data residency, retention and enterprise feature scope before sending production traffic.

Small team proving multi-provider resilience

Either product can work. LiteLLM minimizes software licensing but requires someone to operate it. Portkey can reduce setup effort, while its recorded-log limits and overage model must fit your expected request volume. A short proof of concept with real traffic is more informative than a generic feature checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a production proof of concept

  1. Inventory traffic. List providers, models, regions, modalities, streaming, tools, files, expected concurrency, peak requests and sensitivity of prompts and outputs.
  2. Define acceptance criteria. Set maximum p95 latency, acceptable error rate, fallback behavior, spend variance, log-retention period and policy violations you will tolerate.
  3. Build equivalent routes. Send the same application requests through LiteLLM and Portkey where the provider adapters support them. Keep model parameters and timeouts controlled so the comparison is meaningful.
  4. Exercise failure paths. Simulate rate limits, provider timeouts, malformed responses, expired keys and a complete provider outage. Verify retry caps, fallback selection and whether partial streams are handled safely.
  5. Test compatibility. Include tool calls, structured output, long context, multimodal inputs and file uploads that your application actually uses.
  6. Measure attribution. Reconcile gateway token and cost data with provider billing, and check that tenant, product and environment labels survive retries and asynchronous jobs.
  7. Review governance. Verify virtual or service-account key issuance, RBAC, budget enforcement, audit events, secret rotation, redaction and administrative access.
  8. Run the operations drill. For LiteLLM, rehearse deployment, database and Redis recovery, scaling and upgrades. For Portkey, rehearse quota exhaustion, vendor escalation, export of logs and a controlled migration plan.
  9. Make the decision. Choose the gateway that meets the acceptance criteria with an ownership model your team can sustain, not the one with the longest feature list.

No independent benchmark establishes a universal latency winner between LiteLLM and Portkey. Measure latency, reliability and quality on your providers, traffic patterns and policies.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming an OpenAI-compatible API means identical behavior

Normalize your application around capabilities you have tested. Keep provider-specific limits and error handling in configuration, and expose a capability check before routing a request that needs tools, vision or a large context.

Counting model calls instead of user requests

Agents, retries and fallback calls can multiply gateway traffic. Track every attempt and budget for the worst-case path, not only the first request.

Logging sensitive content by default

Decide whether prompts and completions are required for debugging. Redact secrets, personal data and proprietary documents, restrict log readers and set deletion rules before enabling broad retention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating fallback as transparent

A fallback model may answer differently, reject a tool schema or impose a lower context limit. Mark degraded responses, test the alternate route and give the application a way to handle an unavailable capability.

Underestimating self-hosting

A gateway is part of the request path. Deploy redundant instances, monitor dependencies, rehearse key rotation and upgrades, and document a bypass or rollback procedure before making it mandatory for every service.

Buying enterprise features without confirming scope

SSO, private hosting, data export and compliance language can vary by plan and region. Obtain a feature matrix and written residency and retention commitments that match your contract.

Bottom-line decision

LiteLLM is the better fit for an infrastructure-led organization that needs open-source control, self-hosting, air-gapped operation, provider-key custody or hard spend limits and is prepared to run the platform. Portkey is the better fit for a product or platform organization that values a managed control plane, detailed gateway observability, prompt management, guardrails and packaged enterprise governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If both appear viable, run the proof of concept with your real providers and failure modes. Select on data path, operational ownership, policy enforcement, compatibility and total cost—not on provider-count marketing or an assumed latency advantage.
