LiteLLM vs Portkey vs Helicone: Which LLM Gateway Is Safest for Production?

There is no universally safest LLM gateway. Portkey is the strongest managed-governance choice when you need documented RBAC, redaction, guardrails, private-cloud options and enterprise observability. LiteLLM offers the clearest data-residency boundary when you can operate a hardened, self-hosted stack. Helicone is compelling for observability-led adoption and automatic fallbacks, but its publicly reviewed documentation provides less detail on enterprise security and deployment controls. The safe choice depends on your threat model, compliance scope and willingness to run infrastructure.

What “safe for production” actually means

An LLM gateway sits between your application and one or more model providers. It can centralize provider keys, route requests, retry failures, enforce budgets, redact sensitive content and record traces. That concentration creates both a control point and a high-value target.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Safety therefore has several independent dimensions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Data boundary: where prompts, responses, logs and keys are processed and retained.
  • Identity and authorization: how users, services and administrators authenticate, and whether access is least-privilege.
  • Content controls: whether PII, secrets, prompt-injection attempts and unsafe outputs can be detected or blocked.
  • Resilience: how retries, fallbacks, load balancing and rate limits behave during provider or infrastructure failures.
  • Observability: whether you can investigate cost, latency, model behavior and incidents without exposing more data than necessary.
  • Operations: who patches the gateway, database, cache, secrets system and network, and how quickly incidents are handled.

A managed service can reduce the amount of infrastructure your team patches, but it moves trust toward the vendor’s tenancy, retention and support controls. Self-hosting can keep traffic inside your environment, but your team becomes responsible for hardening every component and responding to failures.

LiteLLM: strongest self-hosted data boundary

What it provides

LiteLLM presents an OpenAI-compatible SDK and proxy that can route requests across providers. Its documented feature set includes load balancing, automatic fallbacks, virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, spend tracking, guardrails and observability callbacks. The vendor says the platform supports more than 100 providers; that figure is a product claim that can change.

The enterprise offering is described as self-hosted and “SOC 2 Type II audited,” with SSO and SCIM, audit logs, secret managers, IP allowlists, multi-region support and support service-level agreements. Those capabilities are materially different from merely placing a proxy in front of an API: they provide mechanisms for workforce identity, key governance and administrative accountability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What stays inside your environment

LiteLLM’s compliance documentation states that, when you self-host, it does not store data or telemetry on LiteLLM servers. It says prompts, responses, virtual keys and the license key do not leave the deployment. The same documentation qualifies that some enterprise metering and license checks can contact LiteLLM services. A regulated deployment should therefore allow only the outbound traffic required by the contract and verify exactly which metadata is transmitted.

Self-hosting does not prevent data from leaving your environment toward the model providers you select. Your egress policy, provider contracts, regional endpoints and prompt-redaction rules still determine the ultimate data path.

Production architecture and failure behavior

The production deployment guidance specifies Kubernetes or Terraform paths and supporting PostgreSQL, Redis, TLS and a secrets manager. It describes monolithic and microservices modes and recommends multiple replicas behind a load balancer. This is a substantial operating commitment, but it gives your team control over network placement, encryption keys, logging destinations and patch windows.

Rate-limit counters are coordinated through Redis across instances. An optional fail_closed_rate_limit_enforcement setting rejects requests with HTTP 503 when counters cannot be verified. That behavior protects a hard usage ceiling during a Redis outage, at the cost of availability. Decide explicitly whether exceeding a limit is more dangerous than temporarily refusing traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LiteLLM’s request architecture places retries within a model group and fallbacks across model groups. This separation matters: a transient failure can be retried against equivalent capacity, while a model-group fallback can move the request to a different provider or model. Each transition should be checked for data-sharing, jurisdiction and capability differences.

Where LiteLLM is safest

  • Your organization requires traffic and logs to remain in a controlled network.
  • You already operate Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Redis, a secrets manager and centralized monitoring.
  • You can enforce outbound allowlists and inspect provider-specific data-processing terms.
  • You have staff for upgrades, vulnerability response, backups, disaster recovery and on-call support.

LiteLLM is a poor fit if “self-hosted” would mean a single unpatched VM, shared administrator credentials, plaintext provider keys or no tested recovery path. The data boundary is only as strong as the deployment around the proxy.

Portkey: broadest documented managed governance

Security and access controls

Portkey documents virtual keys, inbound IP and geography controls, sensitive-data redaction, TLS 1.2 or higher in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. Its enterprise RBAC is intended to separate administrative, operational and application access. The vendor states compliance with SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA. Treat those statements as procurement starting points: request the applicable reports, scope, dates, subprocessor list and contractual commitments for your region and workload.

Portkey’s security material also advertises 99.995% uptime and a 310-data-center global network. These are vendor-stated figures, not an independent availability measurement. Ask how uptime is calculated, whether it excludes provider outages and which locations can process your data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Guardrails and redaction

The guardrails documentation claims more than 60 controls covering PII, prompt injection and output safety. Actions can include deny, retry or reroute. This gives a policy engine more choices than a simple block: a request may be sanitized, sent through another model or rejected according to the rule.

Redaction should be tested with your own identifiers, secrets and multilingual data. Verify whether redaction occurs before logging, before a fallback request and before transmission to each provider. A control that protects the primary route but not a fallback is incomplete.

Routing, fallbacks and traceability

Portkey advertises access to more than 1,600 LLMs and providers, plus smart routing, fallbacks, automatic retries, load balancing, caching, timeouts and canary testing. The vendor says fallback is available on all plans and normally triggers on any non-2xx status. Failed and successful targets are logged so a request can be traced across the sequence.

That behavior improves resilience, but “any non-2xx” can include authentication errors, policy denials and malformed requests that should not be retried. Configure retryable status codes and error classes deliberately, and ensure a fallback does not silently change a model’s safety profile or geographic processing location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan boundaries

Portkey describes its free tier as intended for prototyping. Its $49-per-month production tier is explicitly not recommended by the vendor for organizations requiring custom security controls or data-residency guarantees. Enterprise options include VPC hosting, private tenancy, configurable retention, data-lake exports and advanced compliance. Confirm current plan terms, retention defaults, regional availability and support obligations before signing.

The vendor says it powers more than 3,000 GenAI teams and connects to more than 1,600 LLMs and providers. Those are marketing figures, not evidence that a particular configuration satisfies your control framework.

Helicone: observability-first, with more verification required

What the gateway emphasizes

Helicone’s quickstart describes an OpenAI-compatible AI Gateway with access to more than 100 models, automatic logging, observability and fallbacks. It supports unified billing, provider-key management or bring-your-own keys, and automatic fallback when a provider is down. Its public product positioning centers on routing, debugging and analyzing AI applications.

The homepage publicly shows request, session, HQL, alerts and rate-limit features. For teams trying to understand latency, spend and model behavior quickly, that emphasis can shorten the path from prototype to measurable operations.

The security evidence gap

The Helicone pages considered for this comparison provide less explicit detail than the LiteLLM and Portkey material about enterprise compliance, private-cloud deployment, retention controls and network restrictions. That is an evidence gap, not proof that Helicone lacks those capabilities.

Before sending sensitive prompts, obtain current answers to these questions:

  • Where are prompts, responses, metadata and logs stored, and for how long?
  • Can data remain in a required country, region or private network?
  • What encryption, key-management and tenant-isolation controls apply?
  • Which subprocessors receive request data during primary routing and fallback?
  • How are deletion requests, incident notification and audit exports handled?
  • Can logging be disabled or field-level redaction be enforced before persistence?

Helicone can be a sensible choice for observability-led teams after those answers match the workload. It should not become the default for regulated production solely because it offers convenient logging and fallback.

How the gateways compare on the decisions that affect safety

Data residency and deployment control

LiteLLM provides the clearest documented self-hosted boundary. You control the cluster, database, Redis, logs and network, while still governing provider egress. Portkey offers managed convenience plus enterprise VPC hosting, private tenancy and configurable retention. Helicone requires additional verification for equivalent private-deployment and residency guarantees.

Identity, RBAC and key management

LiteLLM documents virtual keys and, in its enterprise offering, SSO, SCIM, audit logs and secret managers. Portkey documents virtual keys, enterprise RBAC and inbound IP and geography controls. Helicone documents provider-key management or bring-your-own keys, but the reviewed material does not establish the same depth of enterprise identity controls. In every case, keep provider keys out of application source, use separate credentials per environment and rotate them through a secrets system.

Redaction and guardrails

Portkey has the most explicit published guardrail breadth, with a claim of more than 60 controls for PII, prompt injection and output safety. LiteLLM documents guardrails but does not provide a comparable count in the material considered here. Helicone’s quickstart emphasizes logging and observability rather than a similarly detailed guardrail catalog. Measure false positives, false negatives and fallback behavior with representative data.

Retries, fallbacks and load balancing

All three describe fallback capability. LiteLLM distinguishes retries within a model group from fallbacks across groups and coordinates rate limits through Redis. Portkey documents retries, load balancing, timeouts, caching, canary testing and traceable fallback targets. Helicone documents automatic fallback when a provider is down. Reliability is not automatically safety: every alternate target must be approved for data handling, region, model capability and cost.

Trace and cost visibility

Portkey claims that every request and response is recorded with more than 40 cost, performance and accuracy details. LiteLLM offers spend tracking and observability callbacks. Helicone centers its product on automatic logging, request and session views, HQL, alerts and rate limits. More telemetry improves diagnosis only when retention, access and redaction are controlled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational burden

LiteLLM places the largest infrastructure responsibility on the customer. Portkey reduces platform operations but makes contract, tenancy and vendor-assurance review more important. Helicone may offer fast adoption, yet the missing public detail means your security team must spend more time obtaining evidence before approval.

Decision guide: which one should you choose?

Choose LiteLLM when residency is the first requirement

Select LiteLLM when prompts and gateway telemetry must stay inside your environment and you can run a production-grade platform. Budget for redundant replicas, PostgreSQL backups, Redis availability, TLS certificates, secret rotation, image and dependency scanning, patch testing, disaster recovery and 24/7 incident ownership. Document the limited outbound contacts used for enterprise metering or license checks.

Choose Portkey when managed governance is the first requirement

Select Portkey when you need centralized RBAC, documented redaction and guardrails, detailed request traces and enterprise deployment options without building every gateway component yourself. Use an enterprise tier if your policy requires VPC hosting, private tenancy, configurable retention or custom compliance controls. Get the relevant terms in writing rather than inferring them from a public feature page.

Choose Helicone when observability speed is the first requirement

Select Helicone when unified provider access, automatic logging and fast operational insight outweigh the need for already-published enterprise deployment detail. Complete a security review before production use with sensitive prompts. If the vendor cannot provide acceptable retention, tenancy, encryption, incident-response and regional-processing commitments, route only low-sensitivity workloads or choose another architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Production acceptance checklist

Apply the same acceptance tests to whichever gateway you select:

  1. Write the threat model. Identify sensitive data classes, insider risks, provider compromise, gateway compromise, credential theft, denial of service and regulatory obligations.
  2. Map every data path. Include the gateway, logs, traces, cache, database, fallback providers, support tooling, analytics exports and vendor control planes.
  3. Isolate provider credentials. Use separate keys per application and environment, least-privilege scopes, rotation and immediate revocation.
  4. Enforce network policy. Restrict inbound access by identity and, where supported, IP or geography. Restrict outbound destinations and block unapproved providers.
  5. Test redaction before persistence. Send synthetic PII, secrets, prompt-injection strings and multilingual samples. Confirm that primary, retry and fallback paths receive only permitted content.
  6. Set retention intentionally. Choose prompt, response, trace and audit-log periods; disable unnecessary payload storage; verify deletion behavior.
  7. Define retry and fallback rules. Limit attempts, classify retryable errors, cap cost and latency, and approve every alternate model and region.
  8. Test rate-limit failure behavior. Decide whether the system should fail open or return 503 when Redis or another counter store is unavailable. For strict budgets, a fail-closed policy may be appropriate.
  9. Export audit evidence. Confirm that administrator actions, key changes, routing decisions, policy results and fallback targets can be retained in your security system.
  10. Run staged outages. Simulate provider errors, gateway loss, Redis failure, database failure, expired credentials and regional unavailability. Record recovery time and data exposure.
  11. Review supply chain. Pin and scan images and dependencies, verify signatures where available, and maintain a rollback version.
  12. Reassess quarterly and after changes. Provider catalogs, model endpoints, pricing, retention terms and compliance claims change; approval must follow those changes.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming a gateway removes provider risk

A gateway centralizes routing; it does not make a provider contract, model endpoint or regional data transfer safe by itself. Maintain an approved-provider catalog and block unapproved destinations.

Logging full prompts by default

Full payloads make debugging easier but increase breach impact and retention obligations. Prefer metadata and sampled payloads, redact before storage, and grant payload access only to staff who need it.

Retrying every error

Retries can multiply cost, latency and data exposure. Restrict retries to transient failures and stop on authentication, policy and validation errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating compliance badges as configuration

A vendor’s SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR or HIPAA statement does not prove that your selected region, plan, retention setting and subprocessors satisfy your obligations. Match the control scope to your deployment and contract.

Running self-hosted software as a single appliance

Self-hosting without replicas, backups, monitored Redis and tested recovery creates a fragile data boundary. Follow the documented production architecture or reduce the workload until you can operate it properly.

Final verdict

For most enterprises seeking the strongest documented managed controls, Portkey is the leading candidate, provided the selected plan supplies the required VPC, tenancy, retention and compliance terms. For organizations that must keep gateway data in their own environment and have platform expertise, LiteLLM offers the clearest residency story and the most direct control over infrastructure. Helicone is attractive when observability and rapid multi-provider routing lead the decision, but sensitive or regulated production use should wait for a completed review of its current security and deployment documentation.

Whichever gateway you deploy, safety comes from the combination of gateway controls, provider governance, identity, egress restrictions, secrets management, redaction, retention and tested operations—not from the gateway name alone.
