LiteLLM vs Portkey vs Helicone: Which LLM Gateway Has the Best Security Controls?

There is no universal winner. LiteLLM is the best fit when you need self-hosting, strict data locality, customer-controlled keys and detailed governance. Portkey is stronger for a managed enterprise gateway with private-cloud deployment, network controls, PII redaction and broad compliance positioning. Helicone stands out for observability and built-in prompt-injection and jailbreak detection, but its documented LLM Security feature currently supports OpenAI models only.

All three vendors describe meaningful security capabilities, yet their claims are not an apples-to-apples independent benchmark. Treat compliance, uptime and detection figures as vendor-reported until you review current audit reports, penetration-test evidence and contract terms.

What an LLM gateway controls

An LLM gateway sits between your applications and model providers. It can centralize API authentication, route requests, enforce budgets and policy, redact sensitive content, record audit events, and provide a single place to manage provider keys. That central position makes the gateway a security boundary: a compromise or misconfiguration can expose prompts, responses, credentials and usage data across many applications.

The most important question is therefore not which product has the longest feature list. It is who operates the gateway, where request data is processed and stored, which identities and controls are available, and how much operational work your team must perform.

Security comparison at a glance

Security axis LiteLLM Portkey Helicone
Deployment and data ownership Self-hosting keeps processed data and telemetry in your infrastructure; LiteLLM says it stores no data or telemetry on its servers when self-hosted. Managed service plus private-cloud deployment with full data ownership, according to Portkey. Open-source self-hosting, enterprise Helm deployment and SOC 2-compliant cloud regions.
Identity and authorization Enterprise SSO/SCIM, JWT authentication, RBAC, IP allowlists and team-level controls. Token authentication, OIDC SSO on enterprise plans, virtual keys, RBAC and inbound IP/geographic rules. Identity and access features vary by deployment; the cited security material emphasizes gateway security and observability rather than a comparable governance list.
Logging and audit Configurable audit-log retention, required metadata, log export and per-team logging controls. Message and response logging can be disabled while usage metadata such as spend remains tracked. Audit and governance features are described in its enterprise security material; exact retention defaults are not stated in the reviewed sources. Observability is a core capability; exact retention defaults and a directly comparable audit-log matrix are not stated.
Encryption and key handling Documents secret-manager integrations including AWS, Azure, Google, HashiCorp Vault and CyberArk; signed Docker images and vulnerability scanning are also documented. TLS 1.2 or higher in transit, AES-256 at rest, secure key management and virtual keys. Provider keys are encrypted; cloud infrastructure is described as SOC 2 compliant.
Compliance evidence LiteLLM states that it is SOC 2 Type II audited. Claims SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA alignment, with regular audits, compliance checks and third-party penetration testing. Describes SOC 2-compliant cloud infrastructure and OWASP-aligned practices.
Prompt and content defenses Guardrails are documented, but no equivalent built-in injection detector is specified in the supplied material. PII redaction and governance controls are emphasized; no equivalent model-based injection detector is specified. Meta Prompt Guard detects direct and indirect injections and jailbreaks; optional Llama Guard analyzes 14 threat categories. Current documented support is OpenAI-only.
Provider coverage Designed as a multi-provider gateway; exact provider scope depends on your configuration and plan. Multi-provider gateway; exact supported-provider scope for each security feature should be confirmed. Gateway is multi-provider, but the documented LLM Security feature currently works with OpenAI models only.
Primary operational trade-off Self-hosting reduces vendor exposure but leaves patching, hardening, monitoring and incident response to you. Managed governance reduces operational burden; private-cloud ownership and plan boundaries must be verified contractually. Cloud operation is convenient; self-hosting gives control but requires running the observability and security stack yourself.

LiteLLM: strongest control when you own the environment

LiteLLM is the clearest choice for organizations that make deployment ownership and data locality non-negotiable. Its self-hosting documentation states: “When you self-host, LiteLLM does not store data or telemetry on LiteLLM servers.” Requests, responses, keys and logs can remain inside infrastructure you control, subject to the way you configure your own model providers, storage and monitoring.

That ownership is valuable for regulated workloads, sovereign-cloud requirements and internal policies that prohibit prompts from entering a gateway vendor’s cloud. It is not a shortcut around security operations. Your team must secure the Kubernetes cluster or virtual machines, rotate credentials, apply updates, restrict administrative access, monitor logs and prepare incident-response procedures.

Identity and governance controls

LiteLLM’s Enterprise material documents SSO and SCIM for lifecycle management, JWT authentication, role-based access control, IP allowlists and team-level policy. Required metadata can force callers to attach identifiers such as application, department or cost center, making investigations and chargeback more reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audit logs support configurable retention and export to cloud object storage. Teams can control whether message and response content is logged; logging those payloads can be disabled while usage metadata, including spend, continues to be tracked. This separation is useful when you need budget accountability without creating a second copy of sensitive prompts.

Secrets, images and patching

Documented secret-manager integrations include AWS, Azure, Google, HashiCorp Vault and CyberArk. Keeping provider keys in a dedicated secrets system is preferable to putting long-lived credentials in application configuration or gateway environment files.

LiteLLM also documents signed Docker images and vulnerability scanning. Enterprise support lists a 72-hour security patch service-level target in 2026 agent-resources documentation; verify the exact commitment, severity definitions and contractual remedies in your agreement.

When LiteLLM is the better security decision

  • You require self-hosting or a specific private network and region.
  • Your security team needs granular SSO, SCIM, JWT, RBAC, retention and export controls.
  • You want customer-controlled provider keys and the ability to turn off content logging.
  • You have staff and processes to patch, harden and monitor the gateway continuously.

Portkey: managed enterprise governance and private-cloud options

Portkey is aimed at teams that want a polished governance layer without building every control around an open-source gateway. Its security documentation describes token-based API authentication, OIDC single sign-on for enterprise plans, virtual keys and enterprise RBAC. Virtual keys can let applications use centrally managed provider credentials without receiving the underlying secret directly.

Network and data protections

Portkey states that data in transit to and from its service is encrypted with TLS 1.2 or higher and that stored data uses AES-256. Its security material lists inbound IP and geographic controls, allowing administrators to restrict where requests originate. The gateway repository also lists secure key management and PII redaction.

Portkey markets private-cloud deployment with full data ownership. That can be a practical middle ground: you retain control over network boundaries and storage while using a managed product experience. Confirm exactly which components run in your cloud, whether support personnel can access telemetry, and which backups, subprocessors and support systems are included.

Compliance claims and what they do not prove

Portkey claims SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA compliance, along with regular audits, compliance checks and third-party penetration testing. These statements are useful starting points, not substitutes for evidence. Ask for the current SOC report, certificate scope, penetration-test summary, subprocessor list, breach-notification terms and the data-processing agreement. HIPAA suitability also depends on your configuration and a signed business associate agreement where required.

When Portkey is the better security decision

  • You want managed operations plus enterprise SSO, RBAC, virtual keys and network restrictions.
  • PII redaction and private-cloud ownership are central requirements.
  • Your procurement process values formal compliance programs and audit artifacts.
  • You prefer not to own the entire patching and availability burden of a self-hosted gateway.

Helicone: observability with model-based threat detection

Helicone’s differentiator is the combination of gateway observability and LLM-specific threat analysis. Its cloud offering is described as SOC 2 compliant, with EU and US region choices, encrypted provider keys and OWASP-oriented practices. An open-source path supports Docker self-hosting, while enterprise deployment is documented through Helm.

Prompt-injection and jailbreak defenses

Helicone’s LLM Security feature uses Meta Prompt Guard, an 86-million-parameter model, to identify direct prompt injections, indirect injections and jailbreak attempts. Optional Meta Llama Guard, documented at 3.8 billion parameters, can analyze 14 threat categories, including privacy, cybercrime, phishing-related risks and code-interpreter abuse.

The documentation says the feature currently works with OpenAI models only, including GPT-4 and GPT-3.5-turbo. A gateway may route other providers while leaving those requests without this specific detector, so map provider coverage before treating the feature as a universal control. Helicone also documents a base detection rate above 97% on jailbreak attempts; that is a vendor-reported figure whose test set, threshold, false-positive rate and operating conditions should be requested.

Observability and residency

Helicone is designed to make model traffic visible for debugging, cost analysis and security review. Visibility can improve detection of unusual prompts, tool-use patterns or sudden spend, but it also creates a sensitive telemetry store. Select the appropriate EU or US region, define retention and deletion rules, restrict dashboard access and decide whether full prompt and response bodies should be retained.

Self-hosting can keep this telemetry in your environment, but you then operate the database, queues, dashboards, upgrades and alerting. Cloud deployment reduces that work while requiring a careful review of data residency, subprocessors and support access.

When Helicone is the better security decision

  • Security analysts need deep request-level observability as well as gateway routing.
  • Prompt injection and jailbreak detection are priorities for OpenAI workloads.
  • You accept that the documented LLM Security control has narrower provider coverage.
  • You can tune detection thresholds and investigate false positives rather than treating a model score as a complete defense.

Which gateway keeps prompts out of a vendor cloud?

Self-hosted LiteLLM provides the clearest documented answer: LiteLLM says self-hosting does not store data or telemetry on LiteLLM servers. Portkey’s private-cloud option also advertises full data ownership, while Helicone offers open-source self-hosting. In each case, “self-hosted” means the gateway’s processing and storage are under your control; it does not prevent the downstream model provider from receiving a request, and it does not automatically cover backups, traces or support tooling.

For a defensible data-flow design, document every location where content can exist: gateway memory, logs, object storage, caches, error trackers, model-provider endpoints, backups and administrator workstations. Disable content logging where possible, tokenize or redact identifiers before the gateway, and set deletion schedules that match your policy.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Is self-hosting actually more secure?

It can reduce third-party exposure, but security ownership moves to your organization. A self-hosted gateway is only an advantage if you can execute the following controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Run signed or otherwise verified images and scan dependencies continuously.
  • Patch critical vulnerabilities quickly, with an emergency process outside normal release cycles.
  • Place the gateway in a private network, restrict egress and enforce administrative MFA through your identity provider.
  • Store provider keys in a dedicated secrets manager and rotate them on a schedule and after incidents.
  • Separate production, staging and development projects, keys, logs and databases.
  • Monitor authentication failures, unusual token volume, policy bypasses and administrative changes.
  • Test restoration, key revocation and incident communications before an outage.

A managed service can supply stronger operational consistency for a small security team, provided the contract, regions, retention and access controls meet your requirements. The relevant comparison is not “cloud versus self-hosted” in the abstract; it is the control set your team can operate reliably.

How the security controls differ in practice

Identity and authorization

LiteLLM has the broadest explicitly documented governance surface in the supplied material, combining SSO/SCIM, JWT, RBAC, IP allowlists and team policies. Portkey offers a similarly enterprise-oriented model with OIDC SSO, RBAC, virtual keys and network restrictions. Helicone’s published security differentiator is threat detection and observability, so request a detailed access-control matrix if you need feature-level parity with the other two.

Logging and auditability

Logging is a security trade-off. Full payload logs help investigations but increase breach impact and retention obligations. LiteLLM documents configurable retention, export and content-log disablement. Helicone’s value is rich observability, which should be paired with strict field filtering and retention. Portkey’s reviewed material does not state comparable defaults, so do not assume a retention period or deletion behavior without written confirmation.

Encryption and keys

Portkey specifies TLS 1.2 or higher and AES-256 at rest. LiteLLM emphasizes integrations with customer-selected secret managers and customer-controlled infrastructure. Helicone documents encrypted provider keys. Ask all three whether customer-managed encryption keys, separate tenant keys, rotation schedules and support access logging are available in the exact plan you are buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prompt defenses

Prompt Guard and Llama Guard give Helicone a distinctive built-in detection path, but no detector eliminates the need for application-level authorization, tool allowlists, output validation and least-privilege credentials. LiteLLM guardrails and Portkey redaction address different risks. Treat injection detection, PII handling and policy enforcement as complementary layers rather than interchangeable features.

A practical selection process

  1. Classify the data. Mark whether prompts contain personal data, confidential code, health information, financial records or regulated identifiers.
  2. Choose the ownership boundary. Decide whether vendor-cloud processing is acceptable, whether private cloud is required, or whether the gateway must run entirely in your infrastructure.
  3. List mandatory identity controls. Specify SSO protocol, SCIM, MFA enforcement, service-account design, RBAC granularity, IP restrictions and approval workflows.
  4. Define the logging policy. Decide which metadata is required, whether prompt and response bodies may be stored, retention duration, export destination and deletion proof.
  5. Map model coverage. Identify every provider and model you will use, then verify that redaction, guardrails and threat detection apply to each one.
  6. Validate operational ownership. For self-hosting, assign patching, monitoring and incident response. For managed service, verify support access, uptime commitments and notification timelines.
  7. Run a security review. Test authentication, key rotation, logging disablement, redaction, region selection, injection detection and failure behavior in a non-production environment.
  8. Negotiate evidence and terms. Attach the approved regions, retention, subprocessors, audit rights, deletion obligations and incident-notification SLA to the contract.

Questions to ask vendors before purchase

  • Which current SOC report, ISO certificate or independent penetration-test summary can you provide, and what systems does each document cover?
  • Where are prompts, responses, metadata, backups and support records stored and processed?
  • What are the default and maximum retention periods for content and usage metadata on each plan?
  • Can customers supply or manage encryption keys, and how are keys rotated and revoked?
  • Which subprocessors receive request data, and how much notice is given before a change?
  • What is the incident-notification deadline, and does it apply to suspected as well as confirmed breaches?
  • Which providers and models support redaction, guardrails and prompt-threat detection today?
  • Can administrators prove deletion, export audit logs and restrict support access to a named region?
  • For self-hosted editions, what security advisories, image-signing process and patch-support commitments are provided?

Verdict

Choose LiteLLM when self-hosting, residency, customer-controlled keys and granular governance outweigh the work of operating the platform. Choose Portkey when you want managed enterprise controls, private-cloud ownership, PII redaction, network restrictions and broad compliance positioning. Choose Helicone when observability and model-based prompt-threat detection are the deciding requirements, and your critical workloads can remain within its documented OpenAI-only LLM Security coverage.

None should be approved on marketing claims alone. The most secure gateway is the one whose data flows, identity controls, logging policy, threat defenses and operational responsibilities are documented, tested and enforceable for your exact deployment.
