Choose Helicone when the fastest OpenAI-compatible integration and detailed request analytics matter most.
All three can sit between your application and multiple model providers, but they optimize for different ownership models. LiteLLM makes your team responsible for running the gateway. Portkey packages more of the operating model as a managed service. Helicone emphasizes quick adoption, logging, cost visibility, and queryable request data. The right choice depends less on the number of providers than on who should operate the control plane, how strict your governance requirements are, and whether prompt operations or observability is the immediate bottleneck.

What an LLM gateway does
An LLM gateway gives an application one control point for calling models from different providers. Instead of embedding separate authentication, retry, timeout, fallback, logging, and budget logic for OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex, Groq, Bedrock, and other services, the application sends requests through a common interface. The gateway then selects a provider or model, applies policy, records telemetry, and returns a normalized response.
That layer becomes valuable as soon as an application has more than one model, environment, team, or failure mode. It can prevent provider-specific code from spreading through a codebase, make a provider outage survivable, expose spend by team or user, and give operators a place to enforce rate limits or guardrails. It also introduces another production component. A self-hosted gateway needs capacity planning, upgrades, secrets management, monitoring, and incident response; a hosted gateway shifts much of that work to the vendor but makes your architecture dependent on its availability, terms, and data-handling model.

LiteLLM: maximum control through an open-source gateway
What you get
LiteLLM describes itself as an open-source library with a single OpenAI-format interface for calling more than 100 LLM providers. You can use it from Python as an SDK or run its self-hosted Proxy Server as a shared gateway. The documented Router handles retries, fallbacks, and load balancing, allowing a platform team to express provider and model policies centrally rather than duplicating them in every service.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The proxy also documents virtual keys, budgets at key, team, and user levels, centralized logging, guardrails, caching, an administrative UI, and observability integrations including Langfuse, MLflow, and Helicone. Those pieces make LiteLLM more than a format adapter: it can become an internal platform service that meters use and applies common policy across applications.
Where LiteLLM is strongest
- Infrastructure ownership: you decide where the proxy runs, how it is networked, which data stores it uses, and how upgrades are scheduled.
- Provider portability: the OpenAI-style interface and broad provider support reduce the amount of application code tied to one vendor.
- Routing policy: retries, fallbacks, and load balancing can be configured as part of your platform rather than purchased as a black box.
- Internal chargeback: virtual keys and per-key, team, and user budgets support multi-team allocation and guardrails.
- Integration flexibility: existing telemetry systems can remain in place through the documented observability integrations.
What your team must operate
Self-hosting transfers operational responsibility to you. You need to provision the proxy, protect provider credentials, size it for peak concurrency, monitor error rates and queueing, back up configuration and policy data, and test upgrades. A gateway outage can affect every application that depends on it, so it deserves the same redundancy and incident planning as other shared infrastructure.
The open-source core does not automatically include a vendor-managed service-level commitment or enterprise support package. Commercial support and packaging are separate questions that should be confirmed for your organization and scale. The cost calculation must therefore include engineering time, hosting, observability, security review, and on-call coverage, not only infrastructure spend.
When LiteLLM is the better fit
Choose LiteLLM when your platform team is comfortable owning a service and needs control over deployment, provider credentials, routing behavior, budgets, or data location. It is particularly suitable for organizations that already operate Kubernetes or similar infrastructure, have strict network boundaries, or want to keep the gateway close to internal systems. It is less attractive when your priority is to have a polished, vendor-operated governance and prompt-management plane with minimal platform maintenance.

Portkey: a managed control plane for production operations
Capabilities and naming
Portkey’s published material describes a universal API with automatic fallbacks, load balancing, retries, request timeouts, virtual keys, key management, caching, observability logs and traces, prompt templates with versioning and variables, guardrails, RBAC, SSO, private-cloud/VPC hosting, data-lake exports, and compliance options.
The pricing page also says the product is now called PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway and directs enterprise purchasing to Palo Alto Networks. Product names, ownership, packaging, and plan limits can change, so verify the current commercial and legal terms before signing a contract or documenting the product internally.
Why teams choose Portkey
- Managed reliability controls: fallbacks, retries, balancing, and timeouts are presented as built-in gateway functions rather than components you must assemble.
- Prompt lifecycle support: templates, variables, versioning, a playground, and API deployment give prompt changes a controlled path from experimentation to production.
- Governance: RBAC and SSO support centralized access management, while compliance, private-tenancy, PII-anonymization, and data-control options address regulated environments.
- Operational visibility: logs and traces can be enriched with feedback and metadata, filtered, and connected to alerts.
- Deployment flexibility: hosted usage can be paired with advertised private-cloud or VPC options when a public multi-tenant endpoint is not acceptable.
Trade-offs
A managed control plane reduces infrastructure work but increases reliance on the vendor’s roadmap, regional availability, retention policies, and pricing model. Private-cloud or VPC deployment may improve isolation while adding procurement, integration, and operational complexity. Confirm exactly which features are included in the plan and deployment model you are buying; a feature shown on the product page is not necessarily available at every tier.
When Portkey is the better fit
Portkey is the strongest candidate when prompt operations, governance, and managed production reliability are first-order requirements. It suits organizations that want a central platform team to define access and policy while application teams iterate on prompts, and it is a natural shortlist choice for enterprises evaluating private deployment, SSO, compliance evidence, or support commitments. If you mainly need a lightweight OpenAI-compatible proxy and rich request querying, its broader control-plane feature set may be more than you need.

Gateway behavior
Helicone’s quickstart describes an OpenAI-compatible AI Gateway with access to more than 100 models, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex, and Groq. Automatic logging, observability, and fallbacks are built in. The service supports Helicone-managed provider keys with unified billing and states that it adds 0% markup, meaning the provider price is passed through without an additional gateway margin; you can also bring your own keys.
The product’s core appeal is the short path from an existing OpenAI client to a logged, searchable production request. That can make it useful for a small team that wants immediate visibility into prompts, responses, latency, errors, and spend without first building a telemetry pipeline.
Analytics and prompt tooling
Helicone emphasizes request analytics, cost tracking, alerts, reports, and HQL, its query language for interrogating logged traffic. Its published feature set also includes prompt management, a playground, prompts, scores, and datasets, with availability depending on plan. These tools are valuable when the main problem is understanding how an application behaves in production: which users or routes consume the most tokens, where failures cluster, or how a prompt change affects quality and cost.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Where Helicone fits best
- Rapid adoption: an OpenAI-compatible interface minimizes changes to an existing client.
- Request-level observability: detailed logs, reports, HQL, alerts, and cost views support fast diagnosis and optimization.
- Provider flexibility: the gateway covers a broad model set and can apply fallbacks when a provider fails.
- Simplified billing: managed keys and unified billing are available, while bring-your-own-key remains an option.
Trade-offs
Hosted convenience means you must evaluate data routing, retention, residency, and vendor availability for your workload. On-prem deployment is listed for Enterprise rather than the lower plans, and higher-tier compliance or identity features may be required for regulated use. Helicone’s strongest differentiation is observability; teams seeking extensive private-network control or a deeply configurable self-hosted routing engine may prefer LiteLLM or Portkey’s private deployment options.
Routing, fallbacks, and reliability compared
All three products document gateway-level reliability features, but the labels do not prove identical behavior. A fallback can mean switching models after a provider error, while a routing policy may also consider cost, latency, region, capacity, or request type. Before choosing, ask how policies are expressed, which errors trigger a fallback, whether retries can multiply spend, and how requests are traced across attempts.
| Reliability question | LiteLLM | Portkey | Helicone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retries | Documented | Documented | Not specifically itemized in the cited quickstart |
| Fallbacks | Documented | Automatic fallbacks documented | Automatic fallbacks documented |
| Load balancing | Documented Router capability | Documented | Provider routing documented; load-balancing detail not stated |
| Request timeouts | Not highlighted in the reviewed getting-started description | Documented | Not stated in the cited quickstart |
For a high-volume service, model your failure budget before enabling aggressive retries. A retry can improve availability but also increase latency and provider charges. Set explicit limits, preserve an idempotency strategy where your application needs one, and log the selected provider and every attempt so operators can distinguish a model failure from gateway behavior.
Observability and cost control
LiteLLM
LiteLLM combines centralized logging and spend tracking with integrations for Langfuse, MLflow, and Helicone. This is a good fit when your organization already has a preferred telemetry stack or wants to own the data pipeline. You will need to decide where logs are stored, how long they are retained, and how sensitive prompts and responses are redacted.
Portkey
Portkey lists logs, traces, feedback, metadata, filters, and alerts. Those controls support an operations workflow in which teams correlate a request with application context, review user feedback, and trigger notifications when error rates, latency, or spend cross a threshold. Ask whether the exact retention, export, and data-lake capabilities you require are included in the selected plan and deployment.
Helicone
Helicone puts request analytics, HQL, reports, alerts, and cost tracking at the center of the product. That makes it attractive for teams that want to answer questions directly from gateway data rather than assemble dashboards. The convenience is highest when you accept Helicone’s hosted logging path; security and privacy reviews should cover prompt content, response content, metadata, retention, and access roles.
Prompt management and evaluation workflows
Prompt operations are a meaningful separator. Portkey explicitly publishes templates, variables, versioning, a playground, and API deployment, which supports a controlled lifecycle: create a candidate, test it, publish a version, and let applications reference the deployed prompt. Helicone publishes prompt management, playground, prompts, scores, and datasets by plan, making it useful for experimentation and analysis alongside request logs.

LiteLLM’s reviewed documentation centers on the gateway, Router, keys, budgets, logging, and integrations rather than a comparable prompt-management studio. You can still run prompt tooling beside it, but that usually means selecting and integrating another system. Therefore, a team whose main challenge is prompt version governance should shortlist Portkey first; a team whose main challenge is provider routing can use LiteLLM without needing prompt features in the gateway itself.
Security, governance, and deployment control
| Requirement | LiteLLM | Portkey | Helicone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosting | Core deployment path through the Proxy Server | Private-cloud/VPC options advertised | On-prem deployment advertised for Enterprise |
| Identity and access | Virtual keys; per-key/team/user budgets and rate limits | RBAC and SSO listed | SAML SSO listed for Enterprise |
| Guardrails and data controls | Guardrails documented | Guardrails, PII anonymization, compliance, and data controls listed | Compliance and retention capabilities vary by plan; SOC-2/HIPAA listed for Team |
| Network and residency control | Determined by your infrastructure | Private-cloud/VPC and private-tenancy options listed | On-prem listed for Enterprise; hosted terms apply otherwise |
Do not select a gateway from a compliance badge alone. Confirm where prompts and outputs are processed, whether provider calls leave your approved region, who can read logs, how deletion works, which subprocessors are involved, and whether the required controls are contractual. For a self-hosted LiteLLM deployment, you own those decisions; for Portkey or Helicone, they depend on the exact hosted or private plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePublished pricing and the real cost model
Gateway pricing is only one part of total cost. Add model-provider charges, storage and retention, log volume, overage rates, private deployment fees, support, and the internal cost of operating a self-hosted service. Published prices are volatile; treat the figures below as the pages displayed when accessed in 2026, not permanent quotes.
| Product and plan | Published allowance or price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| LiteLLM open-source core | No subscription price stated in the reviewed material | Self-hosting and enterprise support or packaging can create separate infrastructure and commercial costs |
| Portkey Free Forever | 10,000 recorded logs per month | Plan details and product naming should be rechecked before purchase |
| Portkey Production | $49 per month | Includes 100,000 recorded logs per month; additional 100,000 requests listed at $9 |
| Portkey Enterprise | Custom pricing | Enterprise deployment, governance, and support terms require a direct quote |
| Helicone Hobby | Free; 10,000 requests and 1 GB storage | Storage and request limits constrain how much history you retain |
| Helicone Pro | $79 per month | Unlimited seats, alerts/reports, and HQL listed |
| Helicone Team | $799 per month | Five organizations and SOC-2/HIPAA compliance listed |
| Helicone Enterprise | Custom pricing | SAML SSO, on-prem deployment, and custom retention listed |
For a fair estimate, measure monthly requests, average prompt and completion tokens, retry frequency, log size, retention period, number of organizations, and peak concurrency. A low gateway subscription can still be expensive if retries or verbose logs increase provider and storage charges. Conversely, a managed plan may be cheaper than the engineering time required to make a self-hosted gateway highly available and compliant.
How to choose: a practical decision framework
Choose LiteLLM if control is the requirement
- You need to run the gateway inside your own network or cloud account.
- You want an open-source base and the ability to inspect or adapt routing behavior.
- Your platform team can own upgrades, scaling, secrets, and on-call response.
- Provider portability, budgets, virtual keys, and configurable fallbacks matter more than a built-in prompt studio.
Choose Portkey if governance and prompt operations lead
- You want a managed production control plane rather than another service to operate.
- Prompt templates, variables, versioning, playground workflows, and API deployment are central to delivery.
- RBAC, SSO, compliance options, private-cloud/VPC deployment, or data controls are procurement requirements.
- You need logs, traces, feedback, metadata, filters, and alerts in one operational product.
Choose Helicone if time-to-visibility leads
- You already use an OpenAI-compatible client and want to add gateway behavior with minimal integration work.
- Request analytics, HQL, reports, alerts, and cost tracking are the immediate priorities.
- You want automatic logging and fallbacks, with the option to use managed provider keys and unified billing.
- Your compliance needs fit a hosted plan, or your budget supports Enterprise for SAML SSO, on-prem deployment, or custom retention.
If two options still fit
- Define the operating boundary: decide whether your team or the vendor will own upgrades, uptime, data stores, and incident response.
- List non-negotiable controls: include network location, residency, SSO, audit logs, retention, redaction, and contractual compliance.
- Describe one routing policy: write down the primary model, fallback order, retry limit, timeout, and cost ceiling for a real workload.
- Calculate traffic: use request volume, token volume, log retention, and peak concurrency rather than monthly requests alone.
- Run a representative pilot: send the same anonymized workload through each finalist and measure your own latency, error recovery, logging completeness, operator effort, and spend.
- Check exit paths: verify whether prompts, logs, metadata, keys, and routing configuration can be exported if you change providers.
Migration and rollout checklist
An LLM gateway is on the critical path, so introduce it in stages instead of redirecting every production request at once.
- Inventory provider calls. Record SDKs, model names, streaming behavior, tool calls, embeddings, regional endpoints, and authentication methods used by each service.
- Define a canonical request contract. Decide which fields, headers, user identifiers, tags, and metadata the gateway should receive. Avoid sending secrets or unnecessary personal data into logs.
- Create separate environments. Use distinct keys, budgets, routing policies, and log access for development, staging, and production.
- Start with observability-only traffic. Verify that prompts, responses, token usage, latency, provider selection, errors, and retries are recorded as expected before enabling aggressive fallbacks.
- Set reliability limits. Configure bounded retries, explicit timeouts, and a fallback order that respects model capability and data residency. Test provider errors, rate limits, malformed responses, and gateway unavailability.
- Introduce budgets and guardrails. Apply per-user, team, or key limits; redact sensitive fields; and test what happens when a budget or policy blocks a request.
- Canary the gateway. Route a small percentage of real traffic, compare application-level success and latency with the direct-provider path, then increase gradually.
- Document bypass and rollback. Keep a tested way to route critical workloads directly to an approved provider or to a secondary gateway if the control plane fails.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming OpenAI compatibility means identical behavior
A common request format does not guarantee identical tool-calling, streaming, token accounting, safety responses, or context limits across providers. Build provider-specific tests for the models you actually use and keep capability metadata near the routing policy.

Best Value
Logging sensitive prompts by default
Prompt and response logs may contain personal data, credentials, proprietary documents, or regulated content. Decide what to redact, hash, sample, or disable before production. Verify that exports and support access follow the same policy.
Comparing plan names instead of limits
“Free,” “Pro,” “Team,” and “Enterprise” are not comparable units. Check recorded-log or request allowances, storage, retention, organizations, seats, SSO, compliance, private deployment, and overage pricing for the exact plan.
Ignoring the gateway as a single point of failure
A shared proxy can improve provider resilience while becoming an application-wide dependency. Run redundant instances where appropriate, monitor the gateway separately from model providers, and maintain a documented emergency route.
Recommended Free Tools
Choosing a feature before defining the operating model
A long checklist can hide the central decision: who owns the service. If your team cannot staff upgrades and incidents, a self-hosted choice may be false economy. If your organization requires network isolation or complete data ownership, a hosted-only plan may be unusable regardless of its analytics.
Final recommendation
For an engineering-led platform that values open-source control and self-hosting, LiteLLM is the clearest fit. For a managed enterprise program combining reliability, prompt lifecycle management, governance, and private deployment options, Portkey is the stronger choice. For a team that wants an OpenAI-compatible gateway quickly and considers request analytics, cost visibility, and fallbacks the main value, Helicone is the most direct fit.
Make the final decision with a small production-shaped pilot. Compare routing behavior, failure recovery, logging and redaction, data location, operator workload, and the complete cost model—not just the advertised number of providers or the monthly gateway fee.
