For most computers, a quality conventional thermal paste is the safer long-term choice. Gallium-based liquid metal can reduce interface resistance and has far higher bulk thermal conductivity, but it is electrically conductive, reacts with some metals, spreads easily during installation, and is difficult to clean. It makes sense when a compatible nickel-plated cooler, unusually high heat density, and a few degrees of extra thermal headroom justify the added risk and maintenance.
What the two materials actually do
Both products fill microscopic gaps between a processor heat spreader or bare die and the cooler base. Air in those gaps is a poor heat conductor, so the interface material replaces air and creates a more continuous thermal path. The compound’s advertised conductivity is only one part of that path: mounting pressure, surface flatness, layer thickness, the chip package, and the cooler itself can dominate the final temperature.

Conventional thermal paste
Conventional paste is a suspension of thermally conductive particles in a carrier. The carrier lets you spread a thin, forgiving layer and remove it without exposing nearby circuitry to a conductive liquid. Typical greases measure about 0.4–4 W/m·K, according to an Applied Thermal Engineering review published in 2025. Formulations vary substantially, so a high-quality, high-viscosity paste can behave very differently from a cheap compound with a runny carrier.

Gallium alloys are metallic liquids at normal operating temperatures. The same 2025 review places typical bulk conductivity around 10–40 W/m·K, far above conventional grease. That ceiling can help at a high-heat-flux interface, but it does not guarantee a matching CPU temperature drop: the silicon package, heat spreader, cooler contact, and airflow remain in series with the interface.

Is liquid metal worth it over regular paste?
Use liquid metal when all of these conditions are true:
- The cooler contact surface is confirmed nickel-plated copper or another surface explicitly approved by the product maker.
- The application is unusually heat-dense or thermally constrained, so a small reduction in interface resistance has practical value.
- You can control a very thin application and protect exposed components from an electrically conductive spill.
- You accept more difficult cleanup and the possibility of chemical reaction at the interface.
Choose conventional paste when the cooler surface is unknown, aluminum is exposed, the system is a routine desktop or laptop, or easy future servicing matters more than the last few degrees. If the cooler or package is the dominant bottleneck, liquid metal’s higher material conductivity may produce little benefit.
Long-term behavior: drying, pump-out and chemical reaction
How conventional paste ages
Grease can harden, separate into phases, dry out, or migrate away from the hottest part of a bare die. Repeated heating and cooling can also drive pump-out: the interface is squeezed and relaxed until material leaves the contact area. AMD warns that low-quality compounds can harden or leak out over time through this effect, causing overheating or premature failure in Versal devices. AMD also notes that higher-viscosity greases are typically more resistant to pump-out on bare-die devices.

That guidance is a formulation and mounting warning, not a universal replacement interval. A viscous paste on a well-supported heat spreader may remain serviceable much longer than a low-viscosity compound on a bare die that experiences large thermal cycles.
How liquid metal ages
Liquid metal does not simply evaporate or dry into a powder during normal service. In a two-year examination, gallium reacted with copper and formed a solid copper-gallium compound. The compound conducts heat less effectively than bare copper, and the reacted layer can grow with time. Nickel plating kept the reacted layer roughly an order of magnitude thinner in that described test, which is why nickel-plated copper is the preferred consumer cooler surface.

This is a different failure mode from grease pump-out. The liquid can remain present while the metal beneath it changes chemically. A temperature reading that slowly worsens may therefore reflect intermetallic growth, a shifted layer, mounting changes, or another part of the cooling system rather than simple “drying.”
What the longevity tests do—and do not—prove
Accelerated laboratory tests show that some low-melting-alloy thermal interface materials can tolerate severe conditions, but they do not promise a calendar life for every retail product or installation.

Will liquid metal corrode your cooler?
Aluminum: do not use gallium liquid metal
Exposed aluminum is unsafe. Gallium can penetrate aluminum’s structure and embrittle it, potentially damaging the cooler and contaminating the interface. Do not rely on a thin oxide layer, paint, or an uncertain surface treatment as protection. If any part of the contact area that the liquid can reach is bare aluminum, use conventional paste instead.
Bare copper: workable but chemically active
Gallium can be absorbed by bare copper and form copper-gallium intermetallics. The cooler may continue to function, but the reaction changes the surface and can leave a less conductive layer. A bare-copper block therefore carries more long-term uncertainty than a properly nickel-plated one.

Nickel-plated copper: the defensible consumer choice
Nickel plating slows the reaction and protects the copper underneath. Inspect the entire contact area, including edges and worn spots, rather than assuming a cooler advertised as “copper” has a nickel barrier. If plating is damaged or the product documentation does not identify the surface, conventional paste avoids the compatibility gamble.
Electrical and handling risks
Gallium-based alloys conduct electricity. A bead that reaches a capacitor, exposed trace, solder joint, or socket contact can create a short or leave a conductive residue. Liquid metal also has very low apparent viscosity during spreading, so pressure from the cooler can push it beyond the intended contact patch.
- Keep the work area clean and dry; remove dust and old compound before opening the interface.
- Use only a controlled, very thin film on the approved contact surface.
- Prevent the liquid from touching exposed components, traces, and solder joints.
- Do not power the system until the cooler is secured and the surrounding area has been checked for migration.
- Handle the product as a corrosive material. Indium Corporation classifies gallium-based alloys as Class 8 corrosive materials.
Conventional paste is generally easier to confine and is not electrically conductive in the same way, although product-specific safety data should still be followed.
Which option is easier to maintain?
| Maintenance question | Conventional paste | Liquid metal |
|---|---|---|
| Routine application | Forgiving layer control; ordinary spreading or mounting methods are practical | Requires a very thin, controlled film and careful containment |
| Electrical exposure | Lower risk than a conductive liquid, subject to the specific formula | Conductive; a spill can short exposed circuitry |
| Surface compatibility | Works across common cooler materials when the product instructions allow it | Exclude exposed aluminum; nickel-plated copper is the preferred surface |
| Removal | Usually straightforward cleaning and reapplication | Residue may resist isopropyl alcohol or acetone alone |
| Long-term concern | Pump-out, hardening, phase separation, or dry-out | Copper-gallium intermetallic growth and migration |
The two-year liquid-metal examination demonstrated a dedicated metal-polishing product to remove residue after ordinary solvents were insufficient. That is a product-specific field report, not a universal cleaning protocol: use the liquid-metal maker’s approved cleaner and verify that polishing will not damage plating.
How to choose before opening the computer
1. Identify the contact surface
Read the cooler’s technical documentation and inspect the base. Confirm nickel plating over copper across the complete contact area. If the base is aluminum, visibly worn through, or undocumented, stop and select conventional paste.

2. Estimate whether the thermal gain matters
Liquid metal’s conductivity advantage is most relevant when the interface is a meaningful part of the thermal resistance. A small, cool-running office processor may gain little, while a compact high-power chip with limited cooler capacity may benefit more. Compare the expected headroom with the cost of conductive-liquid risk and future cleanup.
3. Check the service plan
If the machine will be opened frequently, transported, or maintained by different technicians, conventional paste reduces rework complexity. Liquid metal is better suited to a controlled enthusiast or engineering build where the installer can document the materials and inspect the interface later.
4. Keep a baseline
Record the cooler model and surface, liquid-metal or paste product and batch, application date, mounting method, and baseline temperatures under a repeatable workload. This record lets you distinguish normal variation from a genuine deterioration when you service the system.
Application and rework procedure
Applying conventional paste
- Power down, unplug, and allow the system to cool.
- Remove the cooler without twisting debris across the chip.
- Clean the old compound from both mating surfaces with the cleaner specified by the paste maker; allow both surfaces to dry.
- Apply the small amount and spreading method specified for the particular paste and package. Avoid an unnecessarily thick layer.
- Mount the cooler evenly, using the manufacturer’s tightening sequence so pressure is distributed across the interface.
- Run the same workload used for your baseline and record the result.
Applying liquid metal
- Verify nickel-plated copper or another explicitly compatible surface; never apply gallium alloy directly to exposed aluminum.
- Remove all old material and residue. Ensure the contact area and surrounding board are dry and free of debris.
- Plan physical containment before dispensing. Keep liquid metal away from exposed components, traces, and solder joints.
- Use the supplied applicator to work an extremely thin film over the contact patch. More material does not improve the interface and increases the chance of migration.
- Inspect the perimeter under good lighting, secure the cooler without dragging the liquid beyond the contact area, and recheck the surroundings before powering on.
- Log the product batch, date, surface condition, and baseline temperature so a later inspection has a reference.
Follow the product’s own safety sheet for gloves, ventilation, disposal, and approved cleaners. The chemical classification and surface reaction make improvising with household materials a poor substitute for those instructions.
When to inspect or replace the interface
There is no evidence-based calendar interval that applies to every liquid-metal product, paste, cooler, and workload. Instead, service the interface when a controlled comparison shows a sustained temperature increase, when the cooler has been removed, or when the system has experienced an event that could disturb mounting.

- Conventional paste: investigate pump-out, hardening, visible separation, or dry-out if temperatures rise. A high-viscosity formulation is generally more resistant to pump-out than a low-viscosity one.
- Liquid metal: inspect for migration, exposed or damaged plating, residue, and evidence of copper reaction. Do not assume that a liquid appearance means the interface is chemically unchanged.
- Either material: first rule out dust, fan failure, changed ambient temperature, altered power limits, and mounting pressure before blaming the interface.
During rework, document what you find rather than automatically applying a larger amount. Excess liquid metal increases electrical and migration risk; excess grease can increase interface thickness and impede heat transfer.
Common failure modes and fixes
Temperature rises after a paste installation
Check cooler pressure, contact pattern, and whether the paste has been displaced from a bare-die hotspot. If the compound is visibly hardened or separated, clean both surfaces and reapply a suitable higher-viscosity product.
Liquid metal reaches the edge of the package
Power off immediately and do not probe a live system. Remove the cooler, contain and clean the residue using the product’s approved method, and inspect for contamination on nearby traces and solder joints. Replace damaged or compromised insulation before testing.
Recommended Free Tools
A copper cooler develops a dull or uneven contact patch
That appearance can be consistent with gallium-copper reaction rather than simple drying. Assess the surface condition and the product maker’s rework guidance; a nickel-plated replacement or conventional paste may be the safer next interface.
Alcohol does not remove liquid-metal residue
Do not keep scrubbing blindly or mix solvents. The documented two-year examination found that isopropyl alcohol or acetone alone might be insufficient and demonstrated a dedicated metal-polishing product. Use only a cleaner confirmed compatible with the cooler’s plating and the surrounding hardware.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Recommended interface | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown cooler surface or any exposed aluminum | Conventional thermal paste | Avoids gallium attack and compatibility uncertainty |
| Routine desktop, laptop, or office system | Quality conventional paste | Simpler application, cleanup, and future service |
| Nickel-plated cooler, very high heat density, experienced installer | Liquid metal can be considered | Higher conductivity ceiling may justify the added controls |
| Frequent maintenance or shared service responsibility | Conventional thermal paste | Lower rework and electrical-contamination burden |
| Documented engineering or enthusiast build seeking maximum interface headroom | Liquid metal, with containment and records | Risk is accepted in exchange for potential interface improvement |
Bottom line
Liquid metal is a specialized performance tool, not a universal upgrade. Its 10–40 W/m·K bulk conductivity range can outperform the 0.4–4 W/m·K range typical of conventional greases, but long-term success depends on the entire thermal path and on correct handling. Use it only on a confirmed compatible, preferably nickel-plated surface, in a controlled thin layer with electrical protection and a realistic cleanup plan. For most systems, a high-viscosity conventional paste delivers the better balance of safety, maintainability, and predictable service.
