A Linux system administrator installs, configures, secures, monitors, and troubleshoots computers and services that run Linux—often organizational servers. It is a Linux-focused form of systems administration, not a separate occupation in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data cited here. The BLS figures below describe the broader network and computer systems administrator occupation, not Linux-only workers.
What does a Linux system administrator do?
The job is to keep Linux-based systems available, usable, and protected. Depending on the organization, that can include servers and the software and accounts that depend on them. The BLS describes the broader occupation as setting up and maintaining an organization’s servers, desktop or mobile equipment, and software. Its summary is: “Network and computer systems administrators install, configure, and maintain organizations’ computer networks and systems.”

Typical systems-administration work may include:
- Determining what systems an organization needs and installing operating or application software and hardware.
- Configuring updates, making upgrades and repairs, and monitoring performance.
- Maintaining security, creating user accounts, and managing permissions and access.
- Diagnosing and resolving problems reported by users or detected through monitoring.
- Recommending hardware or software purchases and helping users understand systems.
These are examples from the broader occupation, not a checklist every Linux administrator performs. Administrators work in varied organizations and collaborate with other IT staff. Maintenance, monitoring, or updates can require evening, night, or weekend work, and some administrators work more than 40 hours a week. BLS: Network and Computer Systems Administrators.

How is the role different from a network administrator?
A systems administrator generally manages servers, system software, updates, and user access. A network administrator focuses more on the infrastructure that connects computers, such as routers, switches, and network connections. The boundary is not absolute: some administrators oversee both systems and networks, while others specialize.

What qualifications and skills are useful?
For the broader U.S. occupation, a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field is typical. Some employers require a postsecondary certificate or associate degree instead. BLS says related curricula commonly cover programming, networking, and systems design. These are broad occupation-level patterns; they do not establish one education requirement for every Linux administrator or employer.
Useful capabilities identified by BLS for the broader occupation include analytical thinking, communication, creativity, multitasking, problem-solving, and technical knowledge. Programming and comfort working with varied hardware and software are also relevant. Employers may ask for certifications in the products they use, but no single credential is established as a universal requirement for Linux administrators.
The available evidence does not establish a current, ranked list of Linux commands, distributions, scripting languages, or infrastructure tools that all employers expect. Treat job postings for the organizations and environments you are targeting as the place to identify specific technical requirements.

Not universally. The Linux Foundation’s career roadmap places “Linux System Administrator” in its Systems & Infrastructure path and lists Linux Foundation and Red Hat credentials among possible certifications. That makes certification one route for developing or demonstrating relevant knowledge—not a guarantee of employment or a substitute for checking what a target employer values. The latest BLS profile cited here reports a U.S. median annual wage of $99,130 in May 2025 for network and computer systems administrators. It projects employment in that occupation to decline 4% from 2025 to 2035, from 323,600 jobs in 2025, while averaging about 13,400 openings per year over the decade.
These are national estimates for the broad occupation, not a Linux-specific salary or forecast, and they should not be read as a guaranteed wage or outcome for an individual. BLS attributes some projected decline to tasks shifting to DevOps-focused developers, outsourcing to Networks-as-a-Service providers, and automation of routine work. It also notes that annual openings are expected largely because workers transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force. BLS occupation profile and projections.
