It may be a workable starting point, but a $150 HP Z2 G5 Tower is not automatically a 1440p gaming PC. First confirm it is the Tower model, identify its installed power supply, and check the exact graphics card’s power connectors and physical dimensions. An RX 6600 is one candidate to investigate—not a guaranteed fit or a promise of 1440p performance.
Start by confirming which HP Z2 G5 you have
This guide applies to the HP Z2 Tower G5 Workstation, not the Z2 SFF or Mini. Check the system label and the case itself before buying parts: a model-family name alone does not establish the chassis, internal clearance, or upgrade options.

HP’s Z2 Tower G5 QuickSpecs, version 5 dated March 1, 2021, list a PCIe Gen3 x16 slot for a discrete graphics card, but that does not establish that a particular card will fit, receive adequate power, or be validated by HP. HP lists chassis dimensions of 14 × 6.7 × 15.2 inches (356 × 169 × 385 mm); those exterior measurements are not a measurement of usable GPU clearance.
Identify the installed power supply before choosing a GPU
HP documented 350 W, 500 W, and 700 W power-supply options for the Tower G5. The actual supply in a used workstation cannot be inferred from the product name. Read its label or inspect the installed unit, and check which PCIe graphics power lead it actually provides.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Do not choose a card based only on its slot connection: confirm its power requirement and the required connector against the installed PSU.
- Do not assume an adapter makes an otherwise unsuitable PSU appropriate for the card.
- HP notes that a PCIe card-holder/blower kit is included automatically with the 700 W chassis when configured, and is required for select listed graphics configurations when added aftermarket. That note does not mean every consumer GPU installation needs the kit.
HP’s listed supported professional graphics configurations are not proof that every consumer graphics card has been validated for this workstation.
Is an RX 6600 a reasonable card to check?
The RX 6600 is a potential match only if the specific card and the particular workstation pass the power and clearance checks. AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 product page lists 132 W typical board power, 8 GB GDDR6, one 8-pin power connector, and a 450 W minimum PSU recommendation. That 450 W figure is AMD’s recommendation for the GPU; it does not identify the PSU in your Z2 G5 or establish compatibility with it.

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
Board designs differ even when they use the same GPU. For example, MSI lists its Radeon RX 6600 ARMOR 8G at 238 × 128 × 39 mm and recommends a 500 W or greater PSU. Those are specifications for that MSI board, not every RX 6600. Compare the precise card’s length, height, thickness, connector, and power recommendation with the open workstation before purchase.

- Confirm the chassis: verify that the used unit is the Z2 Tower G5, not the SFF or Mini.
- Read the PSU label: establish whether the installed supply is the 350 W, 500 W, or 700 W option, and inspect its available PCIe GPU power lead.
- Check the exact GPU board: use that model’s own dimensions, power requirement, and connector specification. Compare all dimensions with measured clearance inside the case.
- Record the existing platform configuration: identify the installed processor, memory, and storage. HP’s Tower G5 configurations include multiple 10th-generation Intel Core and Xeon processor options and different power classes; the model name does not tell you what is in the used machine.
- Set expectations only after those checks: decide whether the resulting system suits your games and target settings using evidence for the exact configuration and resolution, rather than assuming a 1440p frame rate.
What the available RX 6600 figures say about 1440p
AMD’s product page publishes selected RX 6600 game figures under the label “1080p Max Settings”: The Division 2, 98 FPS; Doom Eternal, 138 FPS; Far Cry 6, 102 FPS; Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 118 FPS; Wolfenstein: Young Blood, 173 FPS; Apex Legends, 153 FPS; Fortnite, 111 FPS; and Valorant, 452 FPS. These are AMD’s published figures for the listed games and settings at 1080p—not 1440p benchmarks, and not results from an HP Z2 G5 configuration.

- 27-inch 2560 x 1440 HDR gaming monitor with ultrafast 180Hz refresh rate designed for professional gamers and immersive gameplay
- ASUS Fast IPS technology enables a 1ms response time (GTG) for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates
- ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync (ELMB SYNC) technology enables ELMB together with variable refresh rate, eliminating ghosting and tearing for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates.
- DisplayWidget Center enables easy OSD access and monitor settings adjustments with a mouse.
- USB Type-C hub supports video transmission in DisplayPort signal; can serve as a USB hub, meaning that you can connect your device to your wired peripherals with clutter-free set-up
The cited specifications and figures do not establish how a specific used Z2 G5 and GPU will perform at 1440p. The processor, memory, exact card, game, settings, and other system details matter; no 1440p frame-rate guarantee follows from the 1080p manufacturer figures.

The $150 figure is the premise of this build idea, not a verified current price. HP’s specification sheet does not establish what a particular used unit includes or whether its components need replacement. The full cost therefore depends on the actual workstation, any missing or unsuitable parts, and current local graphics-card prices. Inspect the listing and machine rather than treating $150 as the cost of a complete, ready-to-game system.
