Software-Defined Storage Explained: How SDS Works, Its Benefits, and Its Limits

Software-defined storage separates storage management software from the drives and servers beneath it. See how SDS works, where it can help, and which hardware, network, recovery, and cost limits to check.

Software-defined storage (SDS) is an architecture in which software manages storage resources separately from the specific drives and servers holding the data. It can pool capacity, automate provisioning, and deliver storage services through software—but the hardware, network, configuration, and workload still determine what the system can do.

What is software-defined storage?

SDS separates storage management and services from the underlying physical storage infrastructure. Red Hat describes it as “a storage architecture that separates storage software from its hardware”; IBM likewise describes a software layer that decouples storage resources from physical infrastructure. Red Hat’s SDS overview and IBM’s SDS overview explain the general architecture.

Think of SDS as a software-managed pool. An administrator can present logical volumes, file services, or object storage to applications while the platform manages supported resources and applies policies for placement, protection, or administration. The exact services and automation differ by product. SDS does not mean that any drive can be combined with any server, or that data moves automatically without compatibility and configuration limits.

The physical layer remains essential: drives determine media characteristics and capacity; servers provide compute; and the network affects communication and performance. SDS changes how those resources are managed and presented, not the fact that they exist. Microsoft Research describes one architectural motivation as separating control from data flow: “We are researching architectures that decouple control from data flow to enable such policies.” The Microsoft Research SDS Architectures project does not attribute that statement to an individual.

How does SDS work?

  1. Storage resources are connected. The platform discovers or is configured to use supported drives, servers, and other resources. Compatibility rules depend on the specific product.
  2. Software pools and manages resources. A control layer tracks capacity and applies the platform’s management policies. Pooling can make resources easier to allocate, but it does not remove their physical limits.
  3. Storage is presented to workloads. Applications and administrators consume the interfaces the platform supports, such as block volumes, file services, or object storage. Not every SDS platform provides every interface.
  4. Operations are managed over time. Software can help with provisioning, monitoring, and policy application. Administrators still need to plan capacity, maintain the system, respond to failures, and test recovery.

Some architectures distinguish a control plane, which handles management decisions, from the data path that carries storage I/O. That separation can support centralized policies, but it does not by itself establish a particular performance level or implementation.

What are the benefits—and the trade-offs?

Potential benefit What it can mean What to verify
Hardware choice or reuse A platform may support standard servers or existing capacity rather than requiring a tightly bundled storage array. Check the exact hardware compatibility and support matrix. Flexibility is limited to what the software supports.
Scale-out growth Some systems let an organization add drives or nodes as needs change. Growth may also require network and compute capacity, licensing, and data rebalancing. Scale is not unlimited.
Central management and automation Software interfaces and APIs can simplify provisioning, monitoring, and applying policies. Automation does not eliminate storage administration, capacity planning, upgrades, or incident response.
Resource efficiency Pooling and tiering may help place workloads on suitable resources. Results depend on media, workload patterns, protection overhead, and configuration.
Resilience and recovery options Replication or erasure coding can support availability and recovery strategies. Protection requires deliberate design, spare capacity, and recovery testing; it is not automatic protection against every failure.

Potential fits include virtualized environments, cloud computing, high-performance computing, big-data analytics, and disaster recovery, as listed in IBM’s overview. These are possible use cases, not evidence that SDS is the best choice for every organization in those fields. A platform’s operating complexity, support boundaries, workload behavior, and total cost can offset its advantages.

How is SDS different from NAS, storage virtualization, cloud storage, and HCI?

These terms describe different aspects of storage, and one system can combine them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Term What it describes How it relates to SDS
Storage virtualization Abstracting or pooling capacity so multiple devices can appear as a unified resource. It is a technique that SDS may use. SDS is broader: it describes software-defined management and delivery of storage services.
NAS A network-accessible file-storage service. NAS describes how file storage is delivered and accessed; it can run on top of SDS.
Cloud storage Storage delivered within a broader on-demand service model, often with self-service provisioning and metered or elastic resources. SDS can run in a cloud or provide storage to one, but SDS by itself is not a cloud service.
Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) An infrastructure approach that combines storage with other virtualized components. SDS can be part of HCI. Some deployments instead keep compute and storage in separate clusters.

What does a real SDS deployment look like?

Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct

Microsoft documents Storage Spaces Direct as a software-defined storage feature of Windows Server and Azure Local. It combines internal drives across a cluster into a software-defined pool. Depending on the arrangement, volumes can serve a hyperconverged cluster or a disaggregated, also called converged, deployment. Microsoft’s documentation lists Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, plus Azure Local 2311.2 and later; check the current platform documentation for applicable versions and support details. • Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
  • Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds

  • Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
  • Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring

The documented requirements show why “commodity hardware” does not mean unrestricted hardware choice. For Storage Spaces Direct, Microsoft specifies clusters of 2 to 16 approved physical servers with direct-attached SATA, SAS, NVMe, or persistent-memory drives, and strongly recommends networking of 10+ GbE with RDMA. These are requirements and recommendations for this Microsoft feature, not universal SDS rules. Microsoft Learn

Microsoft Learn also describes product-specific capabilities of up to 16 servers, more than 400 drives, and 4 petabytes per cluster, and claims up to 2.4× storage efficiency from erasure coding. These are Microsoft’s figures for Storage Spaces Direct, not independent benchmarks or typical results for SDS generally. The same documentation links a claim of over 13.7 million IOPS per server; that figure should not be treated as a typical or independently verified outcome. Microsoft Learn

How should you assess an SDS platform?

Compare a specific platform against the workload and operating environment rather than relying on broad promises about savings, flexibility, or performance. These are the checks that determine whether an architecture fits:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Workload and interface: Confirm the required block, file, or object interfaces and assess performance using representative workload patterns.
  • Hardware and topology: Check supported drives and servers, the deployment model, and whether storage can grow independently from compute.
  • Network and performance: Evaluate latency, network traffic, and capacity under the intended configuration; a network bottleneck can limit an otherwise capable storage layer.
  • Resilience and recovery: Understand failure domains, protection overhead, rebuild behavior, spare-capacity needs, and whether recovery objectives can be met. Test recovery rather than assuming protection settings are sufficient.
  • Cost and operations: Include software licensing, hardware, networking, support, and the staff time and skills needed for upgrades, troubleshooting, monitoring, and capacity planning.
  • Integration: Verify compatibility with the hypervisors, containers, cloud environments, monitoring, and backup tools used by the organization.

For a platform such as Storage Spaces Direct, drive selection is a support question as well as a component question. Confirm the exact platform’s approved-drive list, interface, endurance rating, capacity, and workload requirements before selecting physical media.
