Linux File Permissions Explained for Windows Users

A practical guide for Windows users moving to Linux: decode ls -l, understand chmod 644 and 755, distinguish directory search from file execute, calculate umask results, and explain WSL permission differences.

Linux permissions are a compact set of mode bits attached to an owner, a group, and everyone else. Read, write, and execute bits are shown in three triplets, while Windows normally evaluates access through named entries in ACLs. Once you can read an ls -l line, convert the triplets to octal, and account for directory search permission, commands such as chmod 644 and chmod 755 become predictable. WSL adds an important boundary: files in Linux’s own filesystem follow Linux rules, while files on a Windows drive under /mnt are still constrained by Windows security.

Linux permissions in one glance

A regular Linux file has an owner and a group, followed by a basic permission mode divided into three classes: the owner (often called user), the group, and other users. Each class has three possible bits: read (r), write (w), and execute (x). The Linux chmod documentation defines the same bits for symbolic and numeric modes.

Run ls -l filename to display the mode. A line beginning -rwxr-xr--, for example, contains a file-type character followed by three triplets:

Part Characters Meaning
File type - Regular file. A directory normally starts with d; other characters identify links or special files.
Owner rwx Read, write, and execute rights for the file owner.
Group r-x Read and execute rights for users in the file’s group.
Other r-- Read-only access for users who are neither the owner nor in the group.

The same command also shows the owner and group names, link count, size, modification time, and name. Those fields matter when a permission check fails: a user may have the right bits in the wrong class, or may belong to a different group than expected.

What does rwxr-xr-x mean?

rwxr-xr-x is the symbolic form of octal mode 755. The owner can read, modify, and execute the file. Group members and everyone else can read and execute it, but cannot write it. For a script or executable program, that is a common arrangement when the owner maintains it and others may run it.

  • First triplet, rwx: owner read, write, execute.
  • Second triplet, r-x: group read and execute, no write.
  • Third triplet, r-x: other users read and execute, no write.

A hyphen means that the corresponding bit is absent. Thus rw-r--r-- gives the owner read/write access and gives the group and others read-only access. That is mode 644, a common setting for a non-executable text or configuration file.

Do not interpret x identically for every object. On a regular file it permits an attempt to execute the file, subject to interpreter, mount, and other system checks. On a directory it means search or traversal permission; it does not mean “run the directory.”

How octal permissions work

Each permission triplet is converted to one digit by adding values: read is 4, write is 2, and execute is 1. The owner, group, and other digits appear in that order. The arithmetic is independent for each class.

r-- 4 Read only
-w- 2 Write only
--x 1 Execute (or directory search)
rw- 6 Read and write
r-x 5 Read and execute/search
rwx 7 Read, write, and execute/search

What does chmod 755 do?

chmod 755 path sets the ordinary mode to owner rwx, group r-x, and other r-x. It replaces the existing ordinary permission bits rather than merely adding one bit. Use it when that exact access policy is intended, not as a generic repair command.

chmod 644 path similarly sets rw-r--r--: the owner can read and write, while group and other users can only read. A numeric mode is concise when you know the desired final state.

Symbolic chmod changes

Symbolic modes can communicate a narrower intent. chmod u+x script.sh adds execute for the owner without changing other classes; chmod g-w file removes group write; and chmod o=r file sets other users to read-only. This style is useful when preserving unrelated existing bits matters. The reference page documents both forms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A fourth leading octal digit can encode special bits such as set-user-ID, set-group-ID, or the sticky bit. For example, 4755 includes a special bit in addition to the ordinary 755 permissions. Treat such modes as a separate security decision and check the program and directory context before changing them.

Why does a directory need execute permission?

Directory bits govern directory operations, not file-content operations. The chmod manual describes directory x as search permission.

  • Read on a directory: allows reading the list of names in that directory, so commands such as a listing can show entries.
  • Write on a directory: allows changing directory entries, such as creating, removing, or renaming names, subject to ownership, sticky-bit, and other checks.
  • Execute on a directory: allows searching/traversing it and accessing an entry when its name is known, provided permissions on the entry and every parent also allow the operation.

These bits are independent. A directory can be readable but not searchable: you may see a name but be unable to open that path. It can also be searchable without being readable: a program that already knows reports/2026.txt may open it while a normal directory listing is denied. To reach a file several levels deep, search permission is required on each parent directory, not only on the file itself.

For a directory tree, changing a file to 644 does not make its parent directories accessible. Conversely, giving a directory 755 does not grant permission to modify files inside it; each file’s own mode and the directory’s write permission are evaluated.

What is umask?

umask is a per-process mask that removes permission bits from the mode a program requests when creating a file or directory. It does not normally rewrite permissions on an existing object. A process asks for a creation mode, and the kernel turns off masked bits.

The umask(2) documentation gives this familiar example: 0666 & ~022 = 0644. A program requests read/write for owner, group, and other; a mask of 022 removes group and other write, producing owner read/write plus read-only access for the other classes. The page calls 022 a typical default process umask, not a value guaranteed by every distribution, shell, service, or WSL configuration.

Directories are commonly requested with execute/search bits already included by the creating program, so the resulting mode depends on both the request and the mask. To inspect the current shell’s mask, run umask. Changing it with umask 027, for example, affects subsequently created objects in that shell and processes it starts; it does not retroactively change existing files.

When a default ACL changes the calculation

A parent directory can carry a default ACL. In that case, Linux uses the inherited ACL to determine the new object’s access, and the umask is ignored for determining that inherited ACL; the requested creation mode still constrains permissions that are absent from the request. This is why a simple “requested mode minus umask” calculation can fail on a shared project directory. Linux ACL behavior, including named users, named groups, effective-rights masks, and default inheritance, depends on filesystem support and mount configuration. The Linux ACL manual describes these rules.

Linux mode bits versus Windows ACLs

Windows file security generally stores a security descriptor containing an access-control list (ACL). Each access-control entry identifies a trustee—such as a user or group—and specifies rights to allow, deny, or audit. Windows can inherit entries from a parent directory when an object is created, as described in Microsoft’s File Security and Access Rights and Access Control Lists documentation.

Question Basic Linux mode Windows security model
Who is named? Owner, owning group, and other users. Linux ACLs can add named users or groups. Trustees are named in individual ACL entries.
What rights are shown? Read, write, and execute/search bits in three compact triplets. Access rights represented by allow, deny, and related ACL entries.
How is inheritance handled? Creation mode plus umask; a parent default ACL can supply inherited entries. Parent security descriptors can provide inheritable ACL entries.
How is access evaluated? Linux checks the applicable owner/group/other bits and, where present, ACL entries and masks. Windows evaluates the security descriptor and applicable ACL entries for the requesting token.

This is a teaching comparison, not a translation table. Linux’s three classes do not map one-to-one to Windows users, groups, or “Everyone,” and chmod 777 is not equivalent to granting a Windows account Full Control. The rights vocabulary, identity selection, inheritance, and evaluation order differ. Conversely, Linux ACLs can provide per-user and per-group entries beyond the basic display, so it is inaccurate to say Linux has no individual-user permissions.

Why doesn’t chmod work on my Windows files in WSL?

First identify the filesystem location. A path in the distribution’s Linux root filesystem, such as /home/alex/project, normally follows Linux ownership, mode bits, and ACL behavior. A Windows drive is normally mounted below /mnt, such as /mnt/c/Users/Alex/project, and remains backed by Windows security.

Windows-drive files without WSL metadata

For Windows files, WSL normally calculates Linux-visible permissions from the effective permissions of the Windows user. Microsoft explains this in File Permissions for WSL. Without Linux metadata, the displayed read/write/execute bits are a uniform representation of that Windows access rather than independent stored Linux permissions. Running chmod therefore has limited effect; removing all write bits can set the Windows read-only attribute, but it cannot grant access that Windows denies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows-drive files with metadata enabled

With the appropriate WSL metadata option enabled, WSL can store Linux UID, GID, and mode information in NTFS extended attributes. You can then set Linux-visible modes with chmod, but the underlying operation still passes through the Windows user’s actual permissions. A display of 777 is not a guarantee that the Windows account can write the file. Metadata settings and mount behavior are version- and configuration-sensitive, so verify the current Microsoft guidance before changing /etc/wsl.conf or remounting a drive.

Choosing the right location

If a Linux build, package manager, or service depends on reliable Unix ownership and mode bits, keep the working tree in the distribution’s Linux filesystem. Use a Windows-mounted path when Windows applications need direct access, and expect Windows ACLs and mount settings to remain part of every permission decision. Moving a file between these locations can change how its permissions are represented.

When Windows applications access Linux files through the WSL share, Microsoft says access uses the distribution’s default user. The WSL documentation also gives 022 as the default umask for files created in a distribution from Windows. Check the current WSL FAQ and File Permissions for WSL page for your Windows and WSL versions.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  1. Check the complete path: run ls -ld path for the directory itself and ls -l path/file for the file. Remember that every parent directory needs search permission.
  2. Confirm the owner and group: the names printed by ls -l determine which triplet applies. If you are neither the owner nor an effective member of the group, only the “other” triplet applies.
  3. Separate listing from traversal: if names are visible but opening one fails, inspect directory x; if a known path opens but listing fails, inspect directory r.
  4. Check whether the path is on /mnt: WSL’s Windows-drive rules may explain why a Linux mode change appears ineffective.
  5. Check creation rules: inspect umask in the process that created the object and consider whether the parent has a default ACL.
  6. Change only the needed bits: use a numeric mode for a known final policy or symbolic forms such as u+x and g-w for a targeted adjustment. Avoid broad modes simply because they make an error disappear.

Safe permission habits

  • Use 644 for a file only when group and other users should read it; it does not make a script executable.
  • Use 755 only when group and other users should be able to execute or search the object as well as read it.
  • Remember that directory write permission controls directory entries, so protecting a file’s contents alone may not protect its name from being removed or replaced.
  • Investigate ownership, groups, ACLs, mount options, and Windows security before resorting to 777; that mode removes the basic Linux read/write/execute barrier for all three classes but does not override another system’s access controls.
  • For shared directories, document the intended group, default ACL, and umask rather than relying on a command copied from an unrelated system.

The shortest mental model

Read an ls -l mode from left to right as owner, group, other. Convert each triplet with 4-2-1 values when you need octal. Treat directory x as “may search/traverse,” not “may run.” Treat umask as a creation-time subtraction, except where a parent default ACL supplies the inheritance rules. Finally, in WSL always ask whether the path is in Linux’s filesystem or on a Windows drive: that boundary determines whether Linux mode bits are authoritative, merely a metadata view, or unable to grant the access Windows withholds.
