The short answer: earlier games are optional
If a particular later Ultima title interests you, starting there is a reasonable approach. The official catalog and product information do not state a rule requiring players to complete earlier numbered games first. That makes “play everything in order” a preference for context, not an established entry requirement.

There is an important qualification: this is a practical recommendation, not a complete continuity guide for every release. The available official material does not map each game’s references, returning characters, or narrative dependencies title by title. You should therefore distinguish between what is documented and what a player might personally enjoy.
First identify which Ultima you mean
“Ultima” is not one single, uninterrupted line of interchangeable games. Electronic Arts’ official catalog lists the numbered sequence from Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness through Ultima IX: Ascension. The same catalog also includes Ultima Online entries and Ultima Underworld games. Those are related branches, but the catalog does not present them as simply more numbers in one linear sequence.

The numbered series
When someone says “a later entry,” they may mean a higher-numbered game such as VII or IX. In that case, earlier numbered games are the most obvious source of optional historical context. Nothing in the reviewed official listings says that you must own, finish, or even start the preceding numbers before launching the later one.
Ultima Online
Ultima Online is listed separately from the numbered games. Treating it as a mandatory stop before a numbered title would impose an order that the catalog itself does not establish. If your interest is specifically an online entry, evaluate that game on its own terms rather than assuming the numbered sequence is a prerequisite.
Ultima Underworld

What the official information shows about a later game
Ultima VII as a concrete example
Electronic Arts’ page for Ultima VII: The Complete Edition describes the Avatar returning to Britannia after a long absence. It introduces a new entity called the Guardian, whose influence is spreading, and points to a group called the Brotherhood in the early signs of the story. The page identifies the title as a PC role-playing game and says it is available through the EA app as a digital license.
That synopsis demonstrates why an experienced player might appreciate background: the wording assumes that the Avatar has been to Britannia before, and it presents a world with an ongoing history. It does not, however, say that a player must have personally played an earlier game. A newcomer can use the stated premise as the starting point and learn the situation from there.
What this example does not prove
Ultima VII is evidence about that title’s published premise, not proof that every later entry is equally self-contained. Conversely, the presence of references to earlier events does not prove that prior play is required. Without an official, game-by-game continuity explanation, it would be too broad to promise that every later release supplies all needed context in the same way.

Choose your starting route
There are three sensible approaches. None is mandated by the catalog; each serves a different kind of player.

- You can follow the type of Ultima that interests you instead of assuming the numbered line is universal.

Common mistakes about “required” play order
Confusing a numbered list with a mandatory syllabus

Those details tell you what the story assumes about its world; they do not, by themselves, instruct you to play a previous game. If one later title is the reason you are interested
Start with that title after reading its official description. Note any names or events that seem historical, then continue unless the game itself makes the explanation impossible to follow. This approach answers the actual question—whether you can begin there—without claiming that every release has identical narrative design.
If you want the broadest numbered-series context
Begin with the earlier numbered games you genuinely want to experience, then move toward the later title. You do not need to represent this as a rule for other players. The strongest supported conclusion is narrow: earlier Ultima games are not identified as prerequisites for starting a later entry in the official material reviewed. The catalog confirms the numbered I–IX line and the existence of the Ultima Online and Ultima Underworld branches.
