Linux desktop features Windows still lacks: six differences that matter

Linux still offers a different desktop model from Windows, not merely a different collection of applications. Its strongest advantages are persistent workspaces, genuinely automatic tiling, replaceable shells, deep interaction customisation, a modular graphics stack and distribution-level control over software and services. Windows has added partial equivalents, so the useful comparison is depth, automation and replaceability rather than a claim that Windows has none of these functions.

A Tux Machines reproduction dated August 12, 2026 identifies virtual desktops and tiling windows as features Linux pioneered or popularised. Microsoft’s WSL and WSLg now let Windows users run many Linux command-line tools and graphical programs, but that compatibility layer is not the same as using a native Linux desktop shell and compositor as the primary environment.

What “still hasn’t made it to Windows” means

Windows has closed some visible gaps. Virtual desktops, Snap layouts, multiple desktop shells supplied by Microsoft and package-management tools all exist in some form. The remaining distinction is how much authority the user has over the desktop and how consistently the feature is integrated into the window manager, display stack and operating-system services.

Linux is not one product. A distribution combines a kernel, user-space services, a package system and a desktop environment; the desktop environment may in turn use a window manager, compositor and display protocol. KDE Plasma is one official example of a feature-rich, independently developed Linux desktop. Other distributions and environments expose different controls, defaults and degrees of polish. Any hands-on comparison should therefore name the distribution and desktop being tested.

Workspace organisation Persistent workspaces are a central workflow concept in many environments, with per-workspace window placement and keyboard navigation. Virtual desktops exist, but behaviour and persistence are more tightly defined by the Windows shell.
Window arrangement Tiling window managers and extensions can automatically maintain layouts and offer keyboard-first control. Snap, Snap Assist and layouts arrange windows, but native automation and extensibility are narrower.
Shell replacement Users can select a complete desktop environment or a standalone window manager. The normal desktop shell is not designed to be swapped for an unrelated, fully integrated shell.
Graphics architecture Wayland compositors and shared freedesktop.org technologies allow multiple interoperating implementations. The display and composition stack is presented as a fixed operating-system component.
System control Distribution repositories, desktop components and services can be replaced or reconfigured, subject to the distribution. Package and service controls exist, but the base shell and many system components remain Microsoft-defined.

1. Workspaces are a primary workflow, not a spare desktop

Linux desktop environments have treated virtual desktops, often called workspaces, as a core way to separate activities. You can keep communication windows on one workspace, development tools on another and documents or reference material on a third. Switching changes the active context without forcing every window into one crowded taskbar.

Persistence and organisation

In many Linux setups, each workspace has an intentional place in the workflow. Windows can be assigned to a particular workspace, and the arrangement remains available when you return. Some environments offer a fixed number of workspaces; others create or remove them as needed. Multi-monitor behaviour also depends on the chosen desktop: workspaces may span all displays or be managed independently per monitor.

Keyboard-driven movement

Workspace switching is commonly exposed through configurable keyboard shortcuts, and a window can be moved to another workspace without reaching for the mouse. Because the shortcuts, numbering and focus rules are editable, users can build a repeatable routine for moving between contexts. The exact key combinations differ by desktop and distribution, so instructions should be written for the installed environment rather than described as universal Linux commands.

How Windows compares

Windows virtual desktops are useful for separating projects, and the Task View interface makes them easy to discover. The limitation is consistency: window placement, naming, startup behaviour and multi-monitor rules are governed by the Windows shell, with fewer native choices for making workspaces persistent activity spaces. Utilities can extend the experience, but those additions are not equivalent to selecting a different window-management model at the desktop level.

2. Tiling can be automatic, persistent and extensible

Tiling means windows share the screen without overlapping, with the layout changing as windows open, close or are resized. Linux supports both complete tiling window managers and extensions for traditional desktops. They can preserve a tree or grid of windows, resize neighbours from the keyboard and restore a known arrangement after a restart.

Beyond fixed snap zones

Windows Snap and Snap layouts provide practical presets: two-column, three-column and other arrangements can be selected from a window’s maximise control or by dragging. These are manual placements. A Linux tiling manager can make tiling the default policy, automatically assigning a new window to a location and recalculating the remaining space. The distinction matters when you open dozens of windows during a long session rather than arranging a few panes once.

Rules and automation

Many Linux window managers allow rules based on an application, title, workspace or monitor. A terminal can always open on a particular workspace; a reference window can be assigned a narrow column; a full-screen program can be exempted from tiling. Keyboard commands can focus, move, resize or swap windows, which is useful for repetitive work and accessibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs

Tiling requires learning the chosen manager’s vocabulary and shortcuts. Some applications assume they can place floating dialogs, and unusual aspect ratios may need manual exceptions. A well-configured setup rewards keyboard-heavy work, while a conventional floating desktop may be friendlier for occasional users. Windows can approximate tiling with Snap and third-party tools, but the automation and replaceability are not part of one broadly configurable native window-manager layer.

3. The desktop shell and window manager are replaceable layers

Linux lets you choose a complete desktop environment or assemble a lighter combination of a window manager, panel, launcher and utilities. KDE Plasma demonstrates the first model: it is an independently developed desktop with its own settings, panel, file-management integration and window behaviour. A standalone manager represents the second model, where the user chooses separate components and connects them.

Why replaceability matters

Different shells make different trade-offs. One may prioritise discoverable settings and graphical tools; another may minimise background services and maximise keyboard control. If a panel, compositor or default launcher does not suit your workflow, you can change that layer without abandoning the Linux kernel, applications or entire distribution.

Windows’ boundary

Windows supports theme changes, shell extensions and alternative launchers, but the ordinary desktop remains organised around Microsoft’s shell and APIs. Replacing it with an unrelated environment is not a normal, supported desktop choice with the same breadth of integration. This is a structural difference, not simply a larger catalogue of themes.

4. Visual and interaction customisation reaches into behaviour

Linux customisation is not limited to wallpaper and accent colour. Depending on the desktop, you can change panel locations, add or remove panels, select launchers, define keyboard shortcuts, apply window rules, install shell extensions and alter how workspaces and notifications behave. KDE Plasma’s feature-rich design is a concrete example of this breadth, although another distribution may expose a smaller or differently organised set of controls.

Appearance and layout

Panels can be placed along different screen edges or replaced by docks. Themes can change window decorations, icons, widgets and colour schemes as a coordinated set. A user who works on a small laptop can choose a compact layout, while a multi-monitor workstation can dedicate panels and widgets to each display.

Interaction rules

Shortcuts can launch applications, move windows, switch workspaces or trigger scripts. Window rules can set an initial size, position, workspace or visibility state for a matching application. These rules turn personal preferences into repeatable behaviour instead of a sequence of manual adjustments.

Limits and maintenance

Customisation is a choice with a cost. Extensions may be tied to a desktop version, and a major upgrade can disable an extension until its author updates it. Settings also vary between distributions, so a guide written for one Plasma release or another desktop should not be presented as a universal Linux procedure. The advantage is the available control; the responsibility is maintaining a coherent configuration.

5. Wayland illustrates a modular display and compositor architecture

Wayland is a display protocol rather than a complete desktop. Its model lets clients manage their windows and displayed contents while a compositor controls presentation, input routing and composition. Different compositors can implement the protocol with different policies, and desktop environments can build their own components around it.

What the user notices

A Linux user may encounter different Wayland compositors depending on the chosen desktop or window manager. This can affect fractional scaling, variable-refresh behaviour, screen capture, input methods, colour management and remote-desktop support. The protocol provides a common point of interoperability, while the compositor and desktop determine the practical experience.

freedesktop.org as shared infrastructure

Shared technologies associated with freedesktop.org allow otherwise separate Linux projects to interoperate on desktop files, portals, notifications, audio and other services. No single company owns the entire desktop stack. That makes experimentation and replacement possible, but it can also produce uneven feature support while projects converge.

Contrast with Windows

Windows users benefit from a consistent display stack whose implementation is controlled as part of the operating system. They do not normally choose a different compositor or display protocol from a desktop settings panel. Linux exposes more architectural choice, but troubleshooting may require identifying which compositor, driver and desktop component is active.

6. Distribution-level software and service control

A Linux distribution is an integrated policy choice. It selects repositories, package formats, update schedules, default desktop components and service-management tools. You can install software from signed repositories, remove or replace desktop components and enable or disable services using the distribution’s standard tools.

Repository-based installation

Repositories provide a catalog tied to the distribution’s release and security process. A graphical software centre may sit on top of the same package system used by command-line tools. Because packages are described by the distribution, dependencies and updates can be handled consistently across the system. Flatpak and other cross-distribution formats may add another option, but their availability and integration still depend on the desktop and distribution.

Choosing and replacing components

You can select a distribution focused on long-term stability, rapid desktop updates, minimal installation or a particular hardware policy. After installation, you can often add another desktop environment, replace the login manager or choose a different service implementation. Mixing components is powerful but can create duplicate settings, conflicting defaults or a less polished experience; the safest approach is to understand which packages and services your distribution treats as core.

Windows comparison

Windows has package managers and configurable services, so it would be inaccurate to call it package-free or uncontrollable. The difference is the scope of replacement. Windows package tools install applications within Microsoft’s operating-system model, while a Linux distribution lets users choose much of that model, including the desktop shell and service stack. Hardware support and application compatibility can make the less replaceable system more convenient for a particular job.

WSL and WSLg narrow the practical gap, but do not replace a Linux desktop

Microsoft documents Windows Subsystem for Linux as a way to run a Linux filesystem and command-line tools alongside traditional Windows applications. WSLg extends that integration to Linux graphical applications, placing them on the Windows desktop. For developers and administrators, this can remove the need for a separate virtual machine or dual-boot installation.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

The boundary remains important. WSL and WSLg host Linux user space inside Windows; they do not turn the Windows shell into a Linux desktop environment with Linux workspace policy, a replaceable compositor and distribution-controlled services. Microsoft’s WSLg architecture also documents integration limitations, so application behaviour, hardware access and desktop features are not identical to running Linux directly.

What you give up or gain when choosing Linux

Hardware and driver support

Linux hardware support varies by device, kernel version and vendor cooperation. Wi-Fi, graphics, fingerprint readers, docking stations and specialist peripherals may work perfectly, require configuration or lack a complete driver. Windows usually has the broader catalogue of vendor-tested drivers and utilities.

Application compatibility

Web applications and open formats reduce platform dependence, but some commercial creative, engineering, accounting and enterprise programs remain Windows-first. Compatibility layers and remote access can help, yet they add another variable. Check the applications and peripherals that are essential to your work before switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Learning curve and recovery

The flexibility described here means more decisions: distribution, desktop, display session, package source and service policy. Start with a mainstream distribution and one desktop, keep a recovery USB, and record changes to packages and configuration files. Once the system is stable, experiment with a second desktop or window manager in a separate user account or test installation.

How to decide whether these differences matter to you

  1. Map your daily contexts. If you constantly separate projects, compare persistent workspaces and per-workspace window rules with the Windows virtual-desktop workflow you use now.
  2. Count manual window operations. If you repeatedly resize and reposition terminals, editors and browsers, test a tiling-capable Linux desktop rather than judging from screenshots of Snap layouts.
  3. Identify the layer you want to change. If your frustration is a panel, launcher, shortcut system or window policy, a replaceable Linux shell may solve it more directly than another Windows utility.
  4. Check your hardware and applications. Verify graphics, docking, printers, specialist devices and must-have software before valuing architectural flexibility.
  5. Choose a defined starting point. Record the distribution, desktop environment, display session and package sources so that advice and troubleshooting match the system you actually run.

The practical verdict

Linux’s enduring advantage is not that Windows lacks every individual feature. Windows now offers virtual desktops, snapping, package tools and WSL-based Linux integration. Linux goes further by making workspaces and tiling central workflow policies, letting users replace the shell and compositor, exposing deeper interaction rules and giving distributions authority over repositories and services. If you value keyboard automation, persistent activity spaces and control over the desktop’s building blocks, those differences are substantial. If hardware support, proprietary applications and a uniform vendor-managed environment dominate your requirements, Windows may remain the lower-friction choice.
