There is no universal winner in the GNOME vs KDE Plasma vs Xfce choice: pick GNOME to try an Activities- and workspace-centered workflow, KDE Plasma for a desktop built around widgets and visible customization options, or Xfce if a modular design and low resource use are priorities. Those are project-documented approaches, not the results of a head-to-head performance test. Which options you can install—and how they are maintained—depends on your Linux distribution.
GNOME vs KDE Plasma vs Xfce: which desktop should you choose?
Start with how you want to work, rather than a claim that one desktop is objectively easier, faster, or more productive.
- Try GNOME if you want to explore the Activities overview and organize open windows across workspaces.
- Try KDE Plasma if you want widgets and many visible ways to arrange and customize the desktop.
- Try Xfce if you value a modular set of desktop components and a project-stated goal of using few system resources.
These are starting points, not guarantees about how a desktop will feel on your distribution or computer. If possible, try the distribution’s live session or install option before committing to a layout.
What differs between the three desktops?
| Desktop | How the project describes it | Documented workflow and customization | Hardware guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| GNOME | GNOME describes its work as an integrated graphical user system, applications, and development platform. Its About page says it maintains around 120 software modules; that is a project module count, not a quality measure or a directly comparable count for the other desktops. GNOME — About | The Activities overview, dash, window switching, tiling, and workspaces are documented parts of its window workflow. GNOME Help says workspaces can group applications. GNOME Help: Windows and workspaces | No comparable benchmark in the cited sources establishes GNOME’s RAM, CPU, boot-time, or battery use against Plasma and Xfce. |
| KDE Plasma | Plasma is KDE’s desktop workspace, within a broader community that also produces applications and Frameworks. KDE says Plasma is included by nearly all major Linux distributions. Getting KDE Software | KDE emphasizes widgets that users can add, remove, move, and mix. Its Plasma page also highlights KDE Connect integration; the available experience can depend on the phone and distribution setup. KDE Plasma | KDE says Plasma works on recent PCs and older computers with constrained resources. That broad guidance is not a minimum-specification guarantee or a comparative benchmark. Getting KDE Software |
| Xfce | Xfce calls itself “a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems.” It is modular, with separately packaged components and plugins. About Xfce | Its components include a window manager, desktop manager, panel, session manager, application finder, file manager, and settings manager. Modularity lets users select components and extend the desktop. | Xfce says it aims to be fast and use few system resources. The cited material provides no quantified, head-to-head comparison. |
Which Linux desktop environment is best for an older PC?
Xfce is the most direct match if low resource use is your priority: its project explicitly states that goal. But that does not establish a particular RAM requirement or prove Xfce will outperform GNOME or Plasma in every setup. KDE also says Plasma can work on older computers with constrained resources, so it should not be ruled out solely because a machine is old.

No comparable controlled test in the cited sources ranks all three environments for memory, processor use, startup time, or battery life. Those outcomes can depend on distribution, versions, drivers, session type, and workload. Test the desktop you are considering on your own machine where practical, and avoid treating a project’s design goal as a measured result.
Does choosing a desktop mean choosing a Linux distribution?
No. A desktop environment is software that a distribution can package, sometimes as a preconfigured edition or “spin.” The options, installation process, update handling, and support depend on the distribution and its release.

Fedora is one concrete example: its downloads page lists GNOME Workstation alongside other preconfigured desktop choices, including KDE Plasma and Xfce options. That is evidence about Fedora’s offerings, not a promise that every distribution ships all three. Check the current download or package documentation for the distribution you plan to use. Can you use KDE apps on GNOME or Xfce?
Yes. KDE says its applications can run in other desktop environments, with closer integration when used with Plasma. Installing a KDE application does not require switching your whole desktop to Plasma. Getting KDE Software

How to make the final choice
- Pick the workflow to try. Use GNOME’s Activities and workspaces, Plasma’s widget-based customization, or Xfce’s modular component approach as your first filter.
- Check your distribution’s options. Confirm the desktop is available for your chosen release and learn how that distribution installs and updates it.
- Try the default layout. Use a live session or installation option if available; assess whether the default arrangement suits your habits before adding customizations.
- Test hardware fit rather than guessing. Xfce’s low-resource aim and KDE’s broad statement about older computers are useful starting points, not guarantees. There is no cited three-way benchmark to settle performance for your exact machine.
KDE describes Plasma as “Simple by default, powerful when needed”; treat that as KDE’s product positioning, not an independent verdict. Likewise, personal preference discussions can help surface questions about layout and workflow, but they are anecdotal rather than technical evidence. A community discussion of “gnome vs kde vs xfce”
