First check your exact Radeon model, operating system, Linux kernel and target ROCm release in AMD’s compatibility matrix. A GPU being part of the RX 7000 or RX 9000 series does not by itself guarantee support. The Linux steps below are specifically for AMD’s Radeon ROCm 7.2.1 guide; do not reuse their package commands or framework wheels for another release.
Windows has a narrower documented path: AMD lists PyTorch support for selected cards, but says the complete ROCm stack is not yet supported on Windows.

Check compatibility before installing
AMD documentation currently has two relevant release paths. Its Radeon-specific guide covers ROCm 7.2.1, while the newer unified ROCm documentation covers ROCm 10.1.0 and identifies ROCm Core SDK documentation as unified starting with 7.13.0. Choose one release and follow that release’s own hardware, OS, kernel and framework instructions; do not mix commands or wheels between them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor the newer release, consult AMD’s ROCm 10.1.0 compatibility matrix (dated 2026-08-26 in the listed documentation). It identifies, for example, the RX 9070 XT as RDNA 4 / gfx1201 and the RX 7900 XTX as RDNA 3 / gfx1100. The Radeon-specific ROCm 7.2.1 Linux compatibility matrix lists selected RX 9000 and RX 7000 models, including RX 9060, RX 9060 XT, RX 9070, RX 9070 XT, RX 9070 GRE, RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 GRE, RX 7700, RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT. These lists are release-specific, not blanket approval for every GPU in either series.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Linux combinations in the Radeon 7.2.1 guide
AMD’s Radeon-specific 7.2.1 matrix lists these Linux combinations:
| Distribution | Desktop edition | Kernel listed by AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 24.04.4 | Desktop | HWE kernel 6.17 |
| Ubuntu 22.04.5 | Desktop | HWE kernel 6.8 |
| RHEL 10.1 | Not stated in the matrix | Linux kernel 6.12 |
These combinations apply to that guide. Check the selected release’s matrix before installing on another OS version or kernel.
Choose Linux or Windows based on what you need
AMD’s Radeon documentation describes broader framework coverage on Linux. Its Windows documentation is not equivalent to a full ROCm installation: the Windows route is for a listed PyTorch configuration, and AMD explicitly says the entire ROCm stack is not yet supported there.

| Platform and route | What AMD documents | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Linux, Radeon ROCm 7.2.1 | Selected RX 9000 and RX 7000 GPUs, listed OS/kernel combinations, and multiple frameworks in AMD’s Radeon documentation. | Readers who need the documented Radeon system stack and framework options. |
| Windows 11, Radeon PyTorch | Selected GPUs with PyTorch 2.9, ROCm 7.2.1 components and Python 3.12; the full ROCm stack is not supported. | Readers who specifically need the listed PyTorch-on-Windows path. |
For Windows, confirm your exact GPU and software combination in AMD’s Radeon Windows compatibility matrix. Do not infer support for other frameworks or the general ROCm system stack from a PyTorch entry.
Install ROCm 7.2.1 on a supported Linux system
The following sequence follows AMD’s Radeon-specific 7.2.1 instructions. It is not a verified set of commands for ROCm 10.1.0. Use the versioned package command that AMD provides for your exact supported distribution in the Radeon Linux installation guide.
- Confirm the system. Match the exact GPU, distribution release and kernel to the 7.2.1 Linux matrix. Update or switch to a listed kernel before proceeding if necessary.
- Install the matching installer package. Install the `amdgpu-install` package specified in AMD’s guide for Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04 or RHEL 10.1, as applicable. Do not copy a package version from one distribution or ROCm release to another.
- Install the graphics and ROCm use cases. AMD recommends the Graphics use case by default. To install open-source graphics together with ROCm, run:
amdgpu-install -y --usecase=graphics,rocm
Review the installer output for warnings or errors rather than assuming the command completed successfully. - Reboot after installation. Restart the system after the installer finishes.
- Add your user to the device-access groups. Run:
sudo usermod -a -G render,video $LOGNAME
Then reboot again so the group membership change takes effect. - Install a framework separately if needed. Use the PyTorch or other framework instructions matching the same ROCm release, OS and Python version. A successful system-stack installation does not make arbitrary framework wheels compatible.
Set up PyTorch with matching AMD wheels
AMD recommends pip for PyTorch machine-learning development and recommends its ROCm wheels. Check the relevant release’s framework compatibility information and supported Python version before creating the environment or installing packages. AMD’s Radeon 7.2.1 guide gives different Python examples for Ubuntu 24.04 and Ubuntu 22.04 (Python 3.12 and 3.10, respectively); those examples are not universal requirements for other releases or systems.

Follow the current instructions on AMD’s Radeon Linux PyTorch installation page rather than copying an old wheel URL. AMD notes that PyTorch.org wheels change regularly and are not extensively tested by AMD, so use AMD’s ROCm wheels when following its supported Radeon path.
Use the correct installation instructions for ROCm 10.1.0
If you selected ROCm 10.1.0, return to AMD’s unified documentation and use its current compatibility matrix and installation method for your GPU, OS and use case. The unified guide describes multiple approaches, including package-manager installation, `amdgpu-install`, pip, tarball and runfile. The correct method depends on the system and what you are installing; the 7.2.1 Radeon command sequence above should not be treated as the 10.1.0 procedure. Start at AMD’s ROCm Linux installation documentation.
Quick Recap
Common installation mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a series name is enough: verify the exact GPU in the matrix for the chosen release.
- Using an unlisted OS or kernel: the Radeon 7.2.1 steps are documented for specific Linux combinations, not every distribution and kernel.
- Mixing release instructions: installer packages, OS combinations and framework wheels are version-dependent.
- Expecting Windows parity: the Radeon Windows matrix documents a PyTorch configuration, not the complete ROCm stack.
- Skipping the second reboot: group changes for `render` and `video` do not apply to the active login session until you reboot.
