What matters most for a continuous YouTube stream
A cloud VM can run the playback and encoding process without keeping a home computer on, but the provider choice is only one part of reliability. Check the selected region’s actual availability and price, instance resources, outbound transfer terms, and the route from that VM to YouTube’s ingest. Neither provider’s published plan figures establish stream stability, latency, or uptime for your specific setup.

- Compute: compare vCPU, RAM, storage, and whether CPU is shared or dedicated for equivalent instances.
- Transfer: estimate monthly outbound traffic at your actual bitrate and check the chosen region’s allowance and overage policy.

The figures below are examples from the providers’ published pages accessed in 2026, not matched performance tests. The cited pages do not establish equivalent regional pricing or performance for India deployments, so the identical-looking 4 GB rows should not be treated as a cost comparison.

Which provider has the better India location?
Akamai says its Chennai and Mumbai core sites are optimized for the India market. For work serving the wider Asia-Pacific region and communicating with Akamai core sites outside India, it recommends Singapore or Sydney. This is provider guidance, not a measured comparison of latency to your viewers or YouTube ingest. See Akamai’s data-center selection guidance.
The cited AWS bundle page describes region-dependent allowances, but it does not provide a directly matched India-region plan-and-transfer comparison here. Choose a region based on actual availability, current terms, and measured route quality—not just the provider name or assumed proximity.

Estimate transfer for a 24/7 stream
For a continuous stream, bitrate drives transfer consumption. At a steady 1 Mbps, 30 days of transmission is about 0.324 TB decimal before protocol overhead; at 5 Mbps it is about 1.62 TB. These are arithmetic estimates using 30 days, not provider-published measurements. Actual traffic can be higher because of protocol overhead and any additional outbound use.

- Choose the intended video bitrate and calculate its 30-day data volume.
- Compare that estimate with the selected plan’s applicable outbound allowance.
- Check how the provider counts transfer to YouTube and what it charges or does if you exceed the allowance.
- Leave additional margin for overhead and operational variation instead of budgeting exactly to the limit.
Akamai says core-region instances have metered outbound transfer with a prorated allowance ranging from 1 TB to 20 TB depending on plan. AWS says Lightsail transfer allowances vary by Region. The practical allowance for your deployment therefore needs to be verified against the current regional terms.

Configure YouTube ingest and test the route
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60, with CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency. It also recommends RTMPS and testing before going live. Use settings suited to the uploaded or played source and the VM’s actual capacity; a higher resolution or frame rate requires a corresponding bitrate and sufficient network headroom. - Select a region and instance. Confirm the instance is available in the intended region, then verify its current price, resources, transfer allowance, and overage conditions.
- Set the encoder for the stream. Use YouTube’s recommended settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate; configure CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where supported.
- Protect the stream key. Add the YouTube stream key only to the encoder or streaming process that needs it. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in logs, scripts shared with others, or screenshots.
- Test from the VM to YouTube. Run a test stream and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Measure sustained outbound throughput and route reliability from the actual instance.
- Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth room beyond the total stream bitrate. Its streaming tips also advise checking upload bandwidth and network reliability.
- Prepare recovery. Use process supervision and logs so you can identify and restart a stopped encoder or player after a host or network interruption. Test the restart and backup procedure before relying on the channel to stay live.
Choose between Linode and Lightsail without guessing
For an India-focused deployment, Linode has a documented location advantage in the form of its Chennai and Mumbai core sites, but the published facts do not prove that it will deliver lower latency or more reliable streaming for your path. Lightsail’s bundle structure and hourly billing up to its monthly maximum may suit an operator who prefers packaged compute, but its allowance is region-dependent.

Before selecting either provider, compare equivalent instance resources and current prices in the regions actually available to you; validate outbound-transfer terms; and test the same source, encoder settings, and YouTube ingest path. No comparative benchmark, India-route latency measurement, or uptime statistic is established by the cited sources.
YouTube policy and a 24/7 schedule
A cloud VM does not change the rights status of the material you broadcast. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and channel rules before scheduling continuous content. The cited guidance covers encoder setup and streaming bandwidth, not eligibility or a blanket approval for any 24-hour broadcast. Do not assume that a continuous schedule guarantees uninterrupted transmission; interruptions can still occur and need an operational recovery plan.
