To start a YouTube stream from OBS, create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy its server URL and stream key into OBS, then start OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live—unless Auto-start settings change that sequence.
A 24/7 setup needs more planning than starting the encoder: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and its documentation does not guarantee that one broadcast will stay live indefinitely. Keep a local recording if you need a replay.

Before you begin: check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. Confirm that live streaming is enabled before configuring OBS; otherwise, the channel may not be able to start the event.
Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast
In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Use the Stream workflow to set up a broadcast now. If you want an event page in advance, choose Manage → Schedule stream. Scheduling gives you a shareable URL and lets viewers set reminders.

Connect OBS to Live Control Room
-
In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube or a YouTube service preset if one is available.
-
If OBS does not fill in the connection details, copy the server URL shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s Server field, then copy the stream key into the Stream Key field. Use the RTMPS address provided by Live Control Room when entering the URL manually; YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP.

Save the settings and keep the key private. YouTube describes a stream key as working like a password and address. Do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or tutorials. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key.

Set OBS output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.
For reference, YouTube Help lists H.264 at 1080p/30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 1080p/60 fps as 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube-published recommendations, not guaranteed bandwidth requirements. Check the current YouTube settings table for your exact output, leave headroom for network variation, and verify actual stream health.
Test your available upload bitrate and run a test stream with representative audio and motion. A static image may not reveal issues that appear once the stream has movement or sound.
Start the stream and confirm it is live
-
Start OBS so it sends the feed to YouTube.

Plan for a long-running broadcast and its replay
YouTube Help warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Under-12-hour streams can be automatically archived, but the warning is about replay capture—not a rule that every stream stops at 12 hours. YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise that a single broadcast can stay live continuously for 24 hours or longer, or that a 24/7 stream will be divided into dependable archive segments.

Prepare and monitor instead of assuming the stream is healthy
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are event-preparation recommendations, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
-
Test before launch and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
-
Monitor stream health and audio/video quality rather than relying only on OBS’s connected status.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
-
You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, meets YouTube’s age requirement, and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days.
-
OBS does not connect: Confirm that the server URL and stream key match the active broadcast in Live Control Room. If the key was reset, replace the old key in OBS. When entering a URL manually, use the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube.
-
The scheduled event is not public yet: Start OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live unless Auto-start is enabled.

Video or audio quality is poor: Check stream health, upload capacity, and whether OBS’s codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current recommendations. Test again with representative content.
-
The replay is missing after a long stream: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording for an important replay; the warning does not mean the live broadcast necessarily ended at 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube broadcast from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or an OBS desktop session, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
