To stop an EC2-hosted YouTube Live stream from disconnecting, first identify which link is failing: the encoder or source, EC2 network capacity, the VPC egress path, YouTube ingest, or playback at viewers’ ends. Record the UTC time and exact error for each interruption before changing settings. Then compare those timestamps with encoder logs, YouTube’s stream-health messages, outbound throughput, and EC2 network metrics. A disconnect is a symptom, not a diagnosis; the right fix depends on which evidence lines up.
First determine who is seeing the interruption
Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room stream health, then ask whether viewers on different networks see the same interruption. A problem reported by one viewer is more likely to be on that viewer’s device or connection. Reports from several viewers sharing a network can point to a common viewer-side issue. Reports from viewers on unrelated networks make the stream or its path to YouTube more suspect. YouTube recommends distinguishing these patterns before troubleshooting the encoder or ingest path (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues).

For every drop, write down the UTC timestamp, the encoder’s exact error, the YouTube health message, and whether the stream resumed by itself. Avoid changing multiple settings at once: doing so can hide which change mattered.
Check whether the encoder or source is failing
Inspect the encoder’s logs, CPU load, and local recording or archive around the disconnect. Update the encoder if it is out of date, but preserve its current logs and configuration first.

- If the local archive has gaps, poor audio or video, or stops at the same time as the stream, investigate the source capture, encoder load, storage and I/O, and encoder application before changing AWS networking.
- If the local recording and encoder output remain healthy while YouTube reports a broken stream, prioritize the outbound connection and ingest path. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says that a healthy-looking stream may indicate an outbound Internet connection problem (YouTube Help).
Note whether CPU load rises just before a drop. An encoder that cannot keep up may produce a poor or interrupted output even when the instance still has network capacity.
Compare total stream bitrate with outbound capacity
Measure outbound throughput from the EC2 host while the stream is operating under representative conditions. A download-speed test does not establish how much upload capacity the stream has. Include video, audio, every simultaneous output, and any backup encoder using the same constrained path. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
If outbound capacity is close to the configured total or fluctuates, reduce the output bitrate, frame rate, or resolution and run a controlled test. The following YouTube figures are H.264 recommendations, not guarantees that a particular EC2 route can sustain them:

Choose a setting the measured connection can sustain with headroom, rather than treating a recommended encoder bitrate as proof of available EC2 bandwidth. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate (YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Verify YouTube ingest and encoder settings
Use YouTube’s recommended settings for the selected codec and output. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it (YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Separate startup or authentication failures from midstream drops. If a third-party encoder cannot start and its error indicates a key or authentication problem, obtain a fresh stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the key configured in the encoder. A key reset is not a general remedy for an established stream that disconnects intermittently; for that pattern, investigate capacity and connectivity first. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for the specific error (YouTube Help).

Check EC2 network limits at the disconnect time
Identify the instance type and review its documented network performance. An instance advertised with “up to” bandwidth may have a baseline rate and use network I/O credits to burst. AWS says credits are earned when usage is below baseline, are separate for inbound and outbound traffic, and bursting is best effort; after credits are exhausted, the instance returns to baseline. Internet-bound capacity may also differ from instance-to-instance bandwidth. A stream that works at first and later drops may warrant checking whether its demand exceeds the available baseline, but confirm with metrics rather than assuming credits are the cause (AWS: Network bandwidth).

Review Elastic Network Adapter (ENA) performance metrics around each recorded UTC timestamp. Relevant counters include:
bw_out_allowance_exceeded: outbound bandwidth allowance exceeded.pps_allowance_exceeded: packet-per-second allowance exceeded.conntrack_allowance_exceeded: connection-tracking allowance exceeded.
These counters indicate that the instance exceeded an AWS-defined network allowance, where packets may queue or be dropped. Configure collection where required. A missing graph is not proof that no brief spike occurred: short bursts may not appear in coarser CloudWatch sampling. AWS describes network performance metrics and allowance behavior in its ENA and network-performance documentation (AWS: Monitor network performance with ENA metrics; AWS: Network bandwidth).

If the evidence shows the instance is hitting an allowance, first see whether a lower bitrate resolves the issue. Moving to an instance type with more suitable network capacity may be warranted if demand still exceeds the available capacity. Check the actual instance type’s baseline and limits before making that change; AWS limits vary by type and workload.

Follow the instance subnet’s route for Internet-bound traffic through the network design actually in use, such as an internet gateway or a NAT path. Then check each applicable control along the route:
- Security-group outbound rules and the return path. Security groups are stateful.
- Subnet network ACL egress and return-traffic rules. Network ACLs are stateless.
- The EC2 host firewall and any NAT device, firewall, or proxy between the instance and YouTube.
Use the minimum rules needed to permit the intended traffic. Do not open inbound ports broadly as an untested response to an outbound stream failure. AWS documents the distinct behavior of security groups and network ACLs in its VPC security guidance (AWS: Security groups; AWS: Network ACLs).

Investigate MTU only when the evidence points there
If the instance uses an unusual MTU or jumbo frames and logs suggest stalled or fragmented connections, check path MTU as a lower-priority branch. AWS says an internet gateway forwards packets up to 1500 bytes and recommends an MTU of 1500 for Internet traffic (AWS: Network MTU). Do not change MTU without a reason tied to the path or symptoms.
Run a controlled test and match the evidence
- Use representative audio and video, and start at a known, conservative bitrate that leaves YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Monitor YouTube Live Control Room stream health and the encoder’s status while the test runs.
- Record the UTC time of every interruption and preserve the corresponding encoder log, YouTube health message, CPU load, outbound throughput, local archive sample, and ENA metrics.
- Change one factor per test, such as bitrate or a specific route rule, so you can tell whether the change affected the result.
- Test any backup encoder and failover path before relying on them for an event. A backup sharing the same constrained egress path does not remove that bottleneck.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video before an event, monitoring stream health, and testing failover (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
Common disconnect patterns and the next check
