You can stream from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube by connecting a camera or other video source, configuring an encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key, and choosing settings your Pi and internet connection can sustain. Keeping it live continuously is a separate reliability challenge: neither YouTube nor Raspberry Pi guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation, so test the complete setup and plan how to detect and recover from failures.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi and a power supply suitable for that exact model.
- Supported boot media with Raspberry Pi OS installed.
- A compatible Raspberry Pi camera or USB camera, plus encoder software that can use it.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream profile.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
There is no universally established minimum Pi model for a particular resolution or a guaranteed 24/7 configuration. Performance depends on the model, camera interface, encoder, settings, cooling, power, network, and restart strategy as a complete system. Treat your first profile as a test, not a promise.

1. Enable YouTube Live and get the ingest details
- If the channel has never streamed, enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The encoder needs both to send video to YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not place it in a public script repository, screenshot, or example configuration.
When your encoder supports it, use the RTMPS endpoint provided in Live Control Room rather than assuming a conventional RTMP address. RTMPS encrypts RTMP using TLS/SSL. YouTube explains the protocol and endpoint in its RTMPS guidance.
2. Assemble and prepare the Pi
Install the operating system and connect the source
Install Raspberry Pi OS on supported boot media, then connect your chosen source: a Raspberry Pi camera or compatible USB camera, depending on the software path. Check that the encoder you plan to use supports both the camera and the ingest protocol. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance recommends a power supply suitable for the model.

Check the network and physical setup
Verify the exact Pi model and wireless adapter support the network band you intend to use; not every model or adapter supports 5 GHz. Use Ethernet where practical and compatible with the installation, but do not treat a wired connection as an uptime guarantee. Provide suitable airflow and secure mounting for the actual location, and consider what happens if local power is interrupted.
3. Configure the encoder and YouTube connection
- Install an encoder that supports the selected camera and YouTube’s ingest protocol. The exact installation steps depend on the encoder and camera; use that software’s current documentation.
- In the encoder’s private stream configuration, enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Prefer the RTMPS URL when supported.
- If the encoder reports an SSL or connection error, check that you selected the correct protocol and exact endpoint, that required ports are available on your network, and that your encoder supports RTMPS.
- Set an initial resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval that you can test on the complete system. Do not select a profile solely because the Pi can capture at that resolution; sustained encoding and upload are separate constraints.
4. Choose stream settings you can sustain
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose quality to fit available upload capacity, run a speed test, and test with movement and audio representative of the real stream. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current bitrate table and requirements.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
There is no single upload-speed figure that is sufficient for every Pi stream. The required bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder profile, and content. Leave practical headroom for network variability, then verify the stream under representative conditions. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for different viewer formats, but transcoding does not compensate for an unstable upload from the Pi.

- Start the encoder and check that the stream preview appears in Live Control Room.
- Go live in Live Control Room when required by the selected workflow.
- Watch stream health and address any warnings before leaving the installation unattended.
- Run a supervised soak test with representative video and audio. Observe the Pi, encoder, network, and YouTube status over an extended period; a successful test does not prove indefinite uptime.
Plan for continuous operation and recovery
“24/7” is an engineering goal, not an uptime guarantee from YouTube or Raspberry Pi. Before relying on an unattended installation, decide how you will detect and respond to each likely failure:

- Camera stalls: determine how you will notice a frozen or missing picture and restart or reconnect the capture path.
- Encoder exits or hangs: arrange a way to detect a stopped process and restore it, then verify it reconnects correctly.
- Network or power interruption: assess how the Pi and encoder behave after connectivity returns or the host reboots. Test the recovery path rather than assuming it works.
- YouTube state changes: check Live Control Room after a reconnect and confirm the broadcast is in the intended state.
- Alerts and ownership: decide who receives an alert and who can restore the stream when it fails.
YouTube’s encoder workflow says to stop sending content and end the stream in Live Control Room. It also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule is not a recommended duration and does not establish that one stream can safely remain live around the clock. Check current YouTube lifecycle behavior and your encoder’s reconnect and broadcast-management behavior before depending on an unattended schedule.

A Pi camera encoder is for a live camera or other live video source. If your goal is instead to loop prerecorded videos, that is a different workflow from capturing and encoding a camera feed.
