Choose Linode Object Storage for a library of video files accessed as S3-compatible objects; choose Block Storage when a stream server on a Linode needs the files on a mounted disk. Neither storage type, by itself, makes YouTube loop a video: you still need a separate process that reads the file and publishes a live stream. The available Linode documentation does not establish that YouTube can ingest or loop a video directly from an Object Storage URL.
Which storage fits your stream workflow?
| Decision | Object Storage | Block Storage |
|---|---|---|
| How files are accessed | As objects in an S3-compatible bucket over HTTP; suited to unstructured assets such as video. Linode Object Storage documentation | As disk-like storage attached to a Linode instance and mounted for server software. Linode Community discussion |
| Requires a Linode instance? | No; Object Storage can be used independently of a Linode VM. Linode Community discussion | Yes; the volume is attached to a Linode instance. Linode Community discussion |
| Best fit | A central media library accessed through object-storage tools or a delivery layer. | A server-side encoder or streaming process that expects filesystem paths and local disk behavior. |
| Delivery role | Linode documents Object Storage as an origin for streaming and data delivery when paired with Akamai CDN; that does not establish direct YouTube ingest. Linode Object Storage documentation | Useful as additional capacity for a server workload; the cited material does not establish it as a public media-delivery origin. |
Linode describes Object Storage as an S3-compatible cloud file-storage service. Its rclone guide shows uploading files to a private bucket, which establishes a storage workflow—not a method for YouTube to fetch or loop those files. Linode’s rclone guide
Can YouTube loop a video directly from Linode Object Storage?
Do not assume so. The available official YouTube material identified for this topic does not confirm direct playback or live ingestion from an S3-compatible URL, and Linode’s storage guides do not document a YouTube looping procedure. A bucket stores and serves files; a separate encoder or streaming server must read the media and publish a live stream to YouTube using YouTube’s current live-stream workflow.
Linode’s media-server guide index includes material about RTMP servers and Block Storage/Plex, but those guide listings are not a verified recipe for looping a prerecorded video to YouTube. Linode media-server guides

Choose based on what the streaming process expects
Use Object Storage for a bucket-based media library
- Choose it when the files are unstructured assets and your software can retrieve them through an S3-compatible interface.
- It does not require a Linode instance, so the bucket can serve as a canonical library separate from the server that runs the stream process.
- If the server expects a normal file path, verify that your chosen software can reliably read the object or stage it locally; do not treat an object URL as interchangeable with a mounted disk.
Use Block Storage for mounted, server-side files
- Choose it when the encoder or stream process runs on a Linode and expects files on a filesystem.
- The volume is attached to a Linode instance, so it suits additional capacity for that server rather than an independent object library.
- Confirm the current attachment, capacity, and regional pricing details in Linode’s live documentation before provisioning; historical community answers are not a reliable current limits or price reference. Linode Community volume discussion
Use both when library storage and active playback have different needs
A practical design is to keep the canonical video library in Object Storage, then copy or cache the file currently being streamed onto an attached Block Storage volume if the stream process needs filesystem access. This combines object-based archival and disk-like working storage; it is an architectural option, not a Linode-published YouTube recipe.
Estimate the real cost before choosing
Do not compare storage labels alone. Estimate the library’s total size, how often files are replaced or uploaded, how many bytes the stream server retrieves, whether viewers receive the broadcast through YouTube or a separate delivery route, and the current rates for the selected region. A file fetched once by a server and then sent to YouTube has a different transfer pattern from a file repeatedly delivered to viewers from a storage origin.

- Object Storage: check bucket storage and outbound transfer charges. Historical community discussions show past pricing examples and inconsistent transfer allowances, so those figures should not be treated as current. Object Storage pricing discussion · Object Storage billing discussion
- Block Storage: check the current monthly capacity rate and applicable product limits for the Linode and region you plan to use. Historical community answers are not a dependable current rate or limit statement. Block Storage discussion
Whether one option costs less depends on your actual stored capacity, reads, outbound traffic, and delivery architecture; storage pricing alone cannot settle it.
Keep storage separate from the live-stream setup
After selecting storage, configure a distinct stream-publishing workflow: the process must access the video, encode or otherwise prepare it as required, and send the live stream to YouTube. Verify YouTube’s current requirements and policies before going live, especially copyright rules for the audio and video you use. The Linode materials cited here do not establish the required YouTube encoder settings or a complete looping setup, so do not infer bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or direct-ingest settings from the choice of storage.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to assembling and maintaining a Linode storage-and-streaming workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
