You can use a public dashboard without signing up, or run your own probe or hub with Docker Compose. Its architecture and trust model are project-documented; no independent benchmark or operational audit establishes its performance or reliability.
What LibrePing is—and what it is trying to change
LibrePing is presented by its author, Michael Volchenkov, as a community-operated alternative to putting every monitoring target, vantage point, and result under one centralized SaaS control plane. The motivation is practical: operators may want more control over where checks run and who can see the targets being monitored. That is the project’s stated goal, not evidence that every operational or privacy risk is eliminated.

The project identifies itself as open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. Its repository describes a Go backend, React/TypeScript dashboard, and libp2p networking. These are project-published descriptions rather than results from an independent code or security audit. LibrePing’s repository and the author’s launch article provide the project’s own account.
How probes and hubs divide the work
A probe performs checks and signs its results. A hub collects measurements, serves a dashboard, and exchanges project data with other hubs. In practical terms, adding a probe contributes a monitoring vantage point; operating a hub adds dashboard and mesh functions.

The repository says that the check catalog, subscriptions, alert rules, and hub directory are replicated among hubs. Heavier measurement-result data is sharded and can be fetched on demand. It also describes gossip, anti-entropy, and catch-up synchronization so that hubs joining late or returning after downtime can obtain data they missed. The intended outcome is eventual convergence, not instantaneous synchronization.
“Gossip + anti-entropy means a hub that joins late can catch up instead of only seeing new traffic.”
This describes the design; the available project materials do not establish measured convergence time, mesh capacity, or uptime under real-world load.

Which checks LibrePing lists
The repository lists six check types. Two require extra operating-system capability on the probe:
| Check | What it measures | Probe requirement |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP(S) | Whether a web endpoint responds | No special capability stated |
| TCP | Whether a TCP endpoint can be reached | No special capability stated |
| DNS | Whether a DNS lookup succeeds | No special capability stated |
| TLS certificate | Certificate-related status | No special capability stated |
| ICMP ping | ICMP reachability and response | Raw-socket capability (NET_RAW) |
| Traceroute | Network path information | Raw-socket capability (NET_RAW) |
These are the capabilities the repository documents, not independent confirmation of how checks behave across networks, operating systems, or restricted hosting environments.
What the trust model can—and cannot—tell you
LibrePing’s repository says probes sign measurements and hubs verify those signatures, rejecting results that are forged or altered after signing. Under the described default, hubs accept validly signed results and identify their origin; confidence can increase when multiple independent probes agree.

- (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
- The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
- Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
- Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
- 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.
A valid signature establishes that a result was signed by the corresponding probe key; it does not prove that the probe is trustworthy or that it is physically where it claims to be. The project explicitly says probe location is self-declared, including when inferred automatically from a public IP, and is not cryptographic proof of geography. The author has solicited feedback on probe trust and resistance to abuse, so protection against malicious probes or colluding operators should not be assumed.

How to try LibrePing or contribute infrastructure
Use a public dashboard
The project presents its public dashboard as usable without signup or self-hosting. Its account model uses a key generated in the browser and a recovery phrase for moving to another device, according to the repository. Store the recovery phrase safely: it is the project-documented way to recover access on another device.
Run a probe
A probe is the relevant role if you want to contribute a monitoring location without operating a dashboard hub. The repository names a spare server, VPS, or NAS as possible hosts and documents Docker Compose for setup. If you want ICMP or traceroute checks, the probe needs raw-socket capability (NET_RAW); verify that your host and container configuration permit it.

Run a hub
A hub provides a dashboard and participates in mesh sharing. The repository documents a Docker Compose quick start, but public mesh participation depends on network reachability and configuration. A NAS is optional rather than required; check that a chosen model supports Docker and the networking configuration you need. A VPS is another possible host, but the project does not endorse a particular provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alerts and interpreting results from different places
The repository lists ntfy, Discord, Slack, and raw webhooks as alert destinations. It says alert destinations are encrypted so only hubs authorized to deliver an alert can read them; that is an implementation claim, not an independently audited security finding.
With distributed checks, a regional failure and a global outage are not necessarily the same incident. A failure reported from one location may reflect a local route, DNS resolver, or network issue, while agreement among independent probes can provide stronger evidence of a broader problem. LibrePing’s described model supports viewing origins and comparing probe results, but the reviewed materials do not establish a specific rule for automatically merging regional failures into one incident.

- [UPGRADED NanoVNA-H] New HW Version V3.7. It is upgradeable as new firmware is developed. With MicroSD card port now can have the measurement data or the screenshots saved in the it at anytime. Added battery circuit management, more secure. Redesigned PCB, you can connect to mobile phone with Type C-Type C cable (original PCB needs OTG cable), see a clear HD image on your phone. Added a ABS case, which is protective and dust-proof. Disply: 2.8 inch TFT (320 x240).
- [IMPROVED FREQUENCY ALGORITHM] The improved frequency algorithm can use the odd harmonic extension of si5351 to support the measurement frequency up to 1.5GHz. The 9KHz-300MHz frequency range of the si5351 direct output provides better than 70dB dynamic, The extended 300M-900MHz band provides better than 60dB of dynamics, and the 900M-1.5GHz band is better than 40dB of dynamics.
- [MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS] The default firmware main function is used for antenna performance measurement. The TX/RX method can measure the complete S11 and S21 parameters. If you need to obtain S12 and S22, you need to manually replace the transceiver port wiring. The CH0 output level is increased to 0dBm when using the fundamental wave, resulting in more accurate reflection measurement.
- [SUPPORT ANDROID PHONE & PC SOFTSARE CONTROL] Designed a practical and simple control application on PC, you can download touchstone(SNP) files for radio design and simulation software. There is a PC interface that adds functionality and lets you work interactively on a bigger screen. Supports time domain analysis function (TDR). Compatible with most Android mobile phones, convenient for connecting to mobile phones. Support Windows Computer Control.
- [STRONG AND SECURE POWER SUPPLY] This VNA is battery powered or USB powered. Built in 650mAh battery, could work for 2 hours continuously. For longer measurement time, kindly connect an external power source. The product interface displays battery usage, providing a clear understanding of the power status.
Likewise, community discussion has asked how multi-location measurements should be labeled for Prometheus or OpenTelemetry. That question does not establish that LibrePing currently offers either integration; confirm current repository documentation before planning an integration.
What is established—and what still needs validation
- Documented: separate probe and hub roles, six listed check types, signed results with hub-side verification, and mesh synchronization mechanisms.
- Not independently established: real-world uptime, node count, performance, adoption, scale, or the effectiveness of defenses against malicious or colluding probes.
- Important trust boundary: cryptographic signatures protect measurement integrity after signing, but self-declared locations are not proof of geography.
For someone who wants a no-signup dashboard or a self-hostable way to contribute vantage points, LibrePing presents a coherent decentralized design. Whether that design meets a production monitoring requirement depends on your tolerance for unverified performance and the trust you place in probe operators.
