If your LG TV shuts down at a predictable time, check its Power Off Timer first. If it turns off when a set-top box, console, or other HDMI device wakes or sleeps, test Simplink (LG’s name for HDMI-CEC) and that device’s power settings. If neither pattern fits, check for a software update and power-cycle the TV. Menu paths vary by webOS version and model.
Match the shutdown pattern to the likely setting
| What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|
| The TV turns off at about the same clock time | Power Off Timer and the TV’s clock |
| The TV turns off when an HDMI-connected device starts or stops | Simplink (HDMI-CEC), then the connected device’s power controls |
| No consistent time or HDMI-device connection | Software update and a power cycle |
| The shutdown continues after these checks | Contact LG support or arrange service diagnosis |
These patterns help choose a first test; they do not establish a single cause. LG’s support guidance identifies settings and connected-device signals as possibilities but does not quantify how often each is responsible.

1. Check the Power Off Timer
A timer can make a scheduled shutdown look like a fault. If the TV turns off at a repeatable time, check whether Power Off Timer is enabled and whether the clock is set correctly. LG says the current time must be correct for timer setup. Its timer guide documents these routes for specific webOS versions:

- 2022 webOS 22: Settings → All Settings → General → System → Time & Timer → Timers.
- 2020 webOS 5.0: Settings → All Settings → General → Time → Timers.
For other versions, including webOS 6.0, webOS 4.5 and earlier, and Netcast, labels or menu locations differ. Use the TV’s manual or identify its model and webOS version rather than assuming one route applies. Turn Power Off Timer off if you do not want the scheduled shutdown.

LG also notes that a TV started by Power On Timer may switch off after two or four hours without remote input, depending on the model. That behavior applies to timer-initiated startup; it is not a universal explanation for an ordinary shutdown.
2. Test Simplink if an HDMI device is involved
Simplink is LG’s term for HDMI-CEC, a feature that lets compatible HDMI devices participate in control of the TV. A set-top box or other connected device may be involved when shutdowns coincide with that device waking or going to standby. LG’s set-top-box troubleshooting guidance gives these paths for specified versions:

- 2020 webOS 5.0: Settings → All Settings → Connection → Device Connection Settings.
On older versions, a separate Auto Power option may appear. LG says Auto Power is not available as a separate option in this troubleshooting guidance for webOS 6.0 or later; disabling Simplink itself is the relevant test there. Menu names can vary by model.
What disabling Simplink changes
Turn Simplink off temporarily and see whether the shutdown pattern changes. The tradeoff is that external devices may no longer control the TV; LG specifically says external-device controls become invalid when Simplink is disabled on webOS 6.0 or later. If the test does not help and you rely on those controls, turn Simplink back on.

3. Check the connected device’s power settings
If the TV shutdown is tied to a set-top box, look in that device’s settings for TV power synchronization or automatic power standby, and test with those controls disabled. The exact names and menus depend on the box and its provider or manufacturer, so use its documentation or support rather than applying a guessed universal path. LG includes these settings among its set-top-box troubleshooting checks.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Power-cycle the TV
LG documents this power cycle for persistent power behavior:
- Turn the TV off and unplug it from the power outlet.
- Hold the TV’s physical power button for 30 seconds. Its location varies by model.
- Leave the TV off and unplugged for five minutes.
- Reconnect the power and turn the TV on.
When to seek service
If the TV still shuts down after checking the timer, testing Simplink and the connected device, checking for an update, and completing the power cycle, contact LG support or an LG Electronics service technician for diagnosis. LG’s guidance recommends service assistance when these troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.
