Sign in to your Hotmail mailbox in a browser

Open a web browser on your Windows computer and go to Outlook.com.

Select Sign in. Enter the email address or other username for the Microsoft account that owns the Hotmail mailbox, then enter its password. If you use another alias for that account, Microsoft says it uses the same password.

If Microsoft asks you to confirm your identity, follow the verification prompt on screen. This check may appear after unusual activity or a sign-in from a new device or location.

Understand the difference between email and Windows sign-in
Signing in at Outlook.com opens your mailbox in the browser; it does not change the account used to sign in to the PC. If Windows is using a local account and you want to switch it to a Microsoft account, Microsoft documents this flow for Windows 10 and Windows 11:

Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.

Select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.

Follow the prompts to complete the account change.
See Microsoft’s instructions for switching between a local and Microsoft account in Windows for details. This setting changes how you sign in to Windows; it is not required just to read Hotmail online.

Check which Outlook sign-in you need
Hotmail and Outlook.com personal mailboxes use a personal Microsoft account. A work or school Outlook mailbox uses an account provided by an organization, so use the sign-in route designated by that organization instead. Microsoft explains the distinction between personal and work or school Outlook accounts.
Troubleshoot a Hotmail sign-in problem

Forgot your username or password, or sign-in fails: use Microsoft’s sign-in helper to work through the recovery options.

Your account is blocked: if Microsoft blocks sign-in after unusual activity, follow the account-unblock guidance linked from its Hotmail sign-in support page.

You have not used the account recently: Microsoft says an account unused for more than two years may have been deleted. This is a possibility, not a guarantee that every inactive account has been removed.

Use Hotmail safely on a shared computer
On a computer other people use, open Outlook.com in a private browsing window. When you finish, sign out of the account and close all browser windows. A regular browser session may otherwise remain signed in.
