They all aim to simplify deploying software on infrastructure you control, but their operating models and feature sets differ. There is no evidence-based universal winner: compare the fit for your workloads, then verify current capabilities in each project’s own documentation.
How the platforms differ
These tools occupy the broad category of self-hosted deployment platforms, but they do not all manage infrastructure in the same way. Levelrail describes its approach as agent-based and built around the Docker Engine API. Its comparison characterizes Coolify as SSH-managed and Dokploy and CapRover as Docker Swarm-based. Those are Levelrail’s descriptions, not an independent architecture audit; consult the current documentation for each project before choosing.

The distinction affects how a platform reaches servers, how services are orchestrated, and how much of the underlying infrastructure you need to understand. It is more useful to begin with that operating model than to pick a product based on a feature checklist alone.

- Deployment definition: Can you deploy with Docker Compose, and does the workflow match how your applications are already configured?
- Server scope: Is one server enough, or do you need to manage deployments across multiple servers or nodes?
- Operations: Are logs, metrics, health checks, backups, and rollback available in the form you need?
- Collaboration: Do you need teams, access controls, audit trails, or preview deployments?
- Starting point: Is a template catalog useful, or will you primarily deploy your own Compose files and services?
Dokploy’s official comparison table lists capabilities such as a UI, Docker Compose, multi-node support, monitoring, backups, rollback, teams, and preview deployments, and marks them differently across Dokploy, CapRover, Dokku, and Coolify. Because that matrix is published by Dokploy, treat it as a list of items to verify—not an independent audit or a guarantee of current behavior. Check the relevant project’s own documentation and release notes for the features your deployment depends on: Dokploy’s comparison table.
Which platform fits your operating preferences?
Consider Levelrail for an agent-based approach—only if its maturity risk is acceptable
Levelrail’s positioning may appeal if you want agent-based server management and integrated observability, identity and access management, and audit features. Those are vendor-described strengths, not independently ranked advantages. More importantly, Levelrail says it has no stable release, that APIs and on-disk formats may change between betas, and that it should not yet be used for production workloads. The project identifies single-node use as its well-tested path. For production systems or data you cannot afford to lose, that warning should weigh more heavily than a feature list. See Levelrail’s project page and its comparison.

Levelrail’s project page lists 311 one-click templates. That is the project’s own catalog count, not an independent inventory or a measure of quality, and it may change. Its comparison page gives an approximate figure of 370 templates for Coolify; that is Levelrail’s estimate about another project, so verify the current catalog directly with Coolify rather than treating the number as definitive.

Consider Coolify if its workflow and templates match your needs
Levelrail describes Coolify as using SSH-based server management and highlights its template catalog. If those characteristics appeal, confirm current SSH requirements, supported deployment workflows, and template availability in Coolify’s own documentation. The evidence here does not establish a current, independently verified feature ranking between Coolify and the other platforms.

Consider Dokploy or CapRover if Swarm suits your setup
Levelrail characterizes Dokploy and CapRover as Swarm-based. That may make either worth investigating if Docker Swarm is already part of your operating model. Verify the current architecture, supported deployment paths, and operational features in each project’s documentation; a vendor-authored comparison table is not a substitute for that check.
Consider a simpler single-server tool if minimal machinery is the priority
Levelrail’s comparison points readers toward Dokku or Kamal when a single server and minimal machinery are the priority. They are alternatives rather than products in the four-way title comparison, so evaluate their current documentation separately if that is your main requirement. This is Levelrail’s framing, not an independent recommendation.

Self-hosted versus managed Dokploy
Dokploy’s documentation distinguishes its self-hosted open-source edition from Dokploy Cloud. With self-hosted Dokploy, you operate the control plane and handle manual updates. With Dokploy Cloud, Dokploy manages the control plane and applies automatic updates. This is an operational choice: self-hosting gives you responsibility for the platform instance, while the cloud option shifts that control-plane maintenance to the provider. See Dokploy’s edition and service differences for current details.

Levelrail’s installation prerequisites
Levelrail’s project page says installation requires a Linux server with an amd64 or arm64 processor, systemd, root access, and ports 80 and 443 open. Its installer installs Docker if it is missing. These are Levelrail-specific requirements; do not assume they apply to Coolify, Dokploy, or CapRover. Check each project’s current installation documentation for its own prerequisites.
A practical way to make the choice
- Start with production risk. If the workload must be production-ready now, Levelrail’s stated pre-release status is a significant reason to defer adoption.
- Write down your deployment workflow. Identify whether you rely on Compose, templates, multiple servers, preview deployments, or a particular orchestration model.
- Decide who operates the control plane. For Dokploy, explicitly choose between self-hosting and its managed cloud service; the responsibility for updates differs.
- Verify must-have features at the source. Confirm current support for monitoring, backups, rollback, access control, and any other operational requirement in the project’s own documentation.
- Test with a noncritical service. Before moving important workloads, validate deployment, recovery, updates, and access with an application that can tolerate disruption.
Exact current releases, minimum resource requirements, and complete licensing or paid-feature boundaries for all four projects are not established here. Check those details in each project’s current release and installation documentation before committing.
