Use a boolean for one independent dialog. When an interface can show several dialog types but only one at a time, store the active dialog in one state value—such as null, 'delete', or 'edit'—instead of maintaining a separate open flag for each. Use a reducer only when the dialog’s transitions have become complex enough to warrant one.
When a boolean is the right choice
A local isOpen boolean is a clear fit when a component owns one dialog and the only meaningful choice is whether it is open. A controlled dialog can receive that value and a callback for changing it. React Aria’s modal documentation presents this controlled pattern with isOpen and onOpenChange; check the current version’s documentation for implementation details.

For example, a settings panel with one confirmation dialog might keep state beside the component that opens it:
const [isOpen, setIsOpen] = useState(false);
There is no benefit in replacing a single, independent fact with a manager or reducer. React’s guidance is to structure state around the information the interface needs, not to avoid booleans as a rule.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
When several dialog flags cause trouble
Suppose a screen can open an edit dialog, a delete confirmation, or a help dialog, but never more than one at once. Three booleans—isEditOpen, isDeleteOpen, and isHelpOpen—allow combinations the interface should not permit. If two flags become true, the state no longer expresses a single valid choice.
React recommends avoiding redundant state. Applying that principle here, keep one value that describes the active choice:

const [activeDialog, setActiveDialog] = useState(null);

Render from that value, so the state itself enforces the zero-or-one rule:

This is an application of React’s state-structure guidance, not a special React API. A nullable identifier is often enough; use a typed union or equivalent constraints in your language if they help prevent invalid identifiers.

Where dialog state should live
Keep state close to the component that owns the dialog when only that component needs to open and close it. If multiple components coordinate the same dialog, move the state to their nearest shared owner and pass the relevant value and callbacks down. React calls this lifting state up. If distant descendants need access, context can carry the shared state without threading props through every intermediate component.
Sharing state does not require making every dialog global. A shared owner is useful when coordination crosses component boundaries; otherwise, local state keeps ownership and behavior easier to follow.

When a reducer is worth adding
A single active-dialog value handles simple selection and closing. Consider a reducer or another explicit transition model when the workflow includes related states and guarded transitions—for example, confirmation, submitting, success, and failure—and update logic spread across event handlers has become difficult to maintain. React recommends considering a reducer when that update logic becomes overwhelming.
Do not introduce a reducer merely because a screen contains several dialogs. The deciding factor is the complexity of the transitions, not the number of modal components.

Reset dialog content when its subject changes
If a dialog contains local state that should start fresh for a different selected item, make that reset deliberate. React documents changing a component’s key to reset its subtree; explicit state reset is another option. Choose based on whether the dialog’s identity should change with the selected entity, rather than relying on incidental mounting behavior.
State shape does not provide modal accessibility
A portal changes where children appear in the DOM, which can help a dialog escape clipping or stacking constraints. It does not, by itself, implement modal focus management. React notes that portal children remain in the same React tree: they can access context, and events bubble according to that tree. Its portal guidance also calls on authors to manage keyboard focus and follow modal practices. See React’s createPortal reference.
Accessibility behavior depends on the dialog component or library as well as your implementation. MUI describes its Modal as a lower-level component and recommends Dialog for dialog use. Its documentation covers focus management, blocking interaction with underlying content, labeling, and lifecycle behavior. It also cautions against stacking more than two modals and against using two backdrops. These are MUI-specific notes, not guarantees about every library. Consult the documentation for the component and version in your app: MUI Modal documentation.
React Aria’s modal documentation describes focus moving into a modal and returning to its trigger when it closes. Verify those details against the current library version before depending on them: React Aria Modal documentation.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- One dialog, one simple open/close choice: use a local boolean.
- Several dialog types, at most one open: use one active-dialog value with a closed value such as
null. - Several components need to coordinate: lift state to a shared owner; use context if it needs to reach distant descendants.
- Many related workflow transitions: consider a reducer or another explicit transition model.
- Content should reset when its selected entity changes: reset it explicitly or change component identity with a key.
- Dialog appears in a portal: handle focus and modal accessibility separately from DOM placement.
