Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Unsaid is an open-source reflection app designed to let people talk through difficult thoughts with a locally run AI model rather than a cloud chatbot. Its creator, Anirudha Basu Thakur, built it for a friend who experiences ADHD, racing thoughts and late-night overthinking. That is the project’s stated purpose—not evidence that the app improves mental health or works equally well for everyone.
What Unsaid is designed to do
Unsaid presents itself as a private place to sort through thoughts a person may not yet want to share with someone else. The project’s README describes three reflection modes, each intended for a different kind of conversation:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Talk Through It: a paced discussion for working through an active dilemma.
- Just Unload: a space for stream-of-consciousness writing that is intended to avoid unsolicited advice.
- The Unsaid: an unsent-letter drafting space that helps distinguish observed facts from assumptions.
These are custom-prompt experiences, not separate clinical services. The project’s slogan is “A private place for the things you don’t know how to say out loud.” Its launch article reproduces a short testimonial from the creator’s friend: “Unsaid is the first time I felt like I had a door I could shut behind me.” That is attributed personal testimony, not an independently verified user study.

How the local setup is described
The project’s launch article describes a React 19, TypeScript and Vite interface, with local Gemma 3 4B inference through LM Studio or Ollama, local memory using IndexedDB, and dictation through Handy, powered by Whisper.cpp. The repository README gives a more specific documented route centered on LM Studio’s OpenAI-compatible local endpoint at http://localhost:1234/v1 and a Gemma model.

The README lists Node.js 18 or later, LM Studio and an open Gemma model as setup components. It recommends Gemma 3 4B or Gemma 2 2B IT. It also documents browser localStorage and optional synchronization to ~/.unsaid/reflections.json for the command-line client. These are the project’s own descriptions; they do not establish that every installation or mode behaves identically.
Choose a way to try it
| Priority | Documented path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Explore with minimal setup | Browser demo with an offline preview simulator | The preview is described as a simulator; it does not demonstrate that your own device is running model inference locally. |
| Run model inference locally | Install Node.js and LM Studio, load a Gemma model, start the local server, then run Unsaid | This takes setup and depends on compatible local hardware. The creator’s reported 8 GB RAM experience is not a tested minimum or a performance guarantee. |
| Speak rather than type | Optional Handy integration for offline dictation, or the browser speech-recognition path | The README describes Handy as an offline option. Browser speech-recognition privacy behavior can depend on the browser and implementation; it was not independently checked. |
| Use a terminal | Run the CLI shell and use its reflection, history and export commands | This developer-oriented option suits people comfortable working in a command-line interface. |
What “local-first” does—and does not—establish
The README says inference and storage are local and describes the app as having zero cloud calls. That is an architectural claim from the project, not an independent network or security audit. The launch article also mentions an ElevenLabs voice companion alongside browser-native speech synthesis, while the README documents procedural local read-aloud and describes its voice workflow as local. The available descriptions do not establish whether current functionality sends personal data to ElevenLabs, so neither the mention nor the README’s assurance should be treated as proof of current data flows.

The README additionally describes an app lock, prompt-injection and clinical-boundary defenses, client-side personal-information masking, and a crisis intervention layer. Their presence is documented by the project, but their effectiveness has not been independently tested. Anyone considering the app for sensitive material should review the current code and configuration, and should not treat a “local-first” label as a substitute for verifying what their particular setup stores or transmits.

Limits, safety and who it is not for
Unsaid explicitly says it is not mental health care: it is not an AI therapist, licensed counselor, psychologist, diagnostic tool or clinical intervention. The project says it does not diagnose conditions or prescribe treatment. It is presented as an automated reflection companion, not an authority on what a person should do.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware expectations and project status
In the launch article, Basu Thakur says Gemma 3 4B runs smoothly on a consumer laptop with 8 GB of RAM. The article gives no machine configuration, workload, test method or benchmark, so that statement is an individual project report rather than a reliable minimum specification. Actual performance can vary with the computer, model and workload.

These options broaden how the project can be explored, but they do not turn the preview simulator into proof of local inference or establish clinical suitability.
