AI is likely to automate parts of Level 1 system and network support, but current evidence does not show that it will replace the entire role. Routine guidance, ticket triage and documented fixes are more exposed; diagnosing unfamiliar problems, communicating with users, verifying outcomes and handling access or hands-on work still call for human judgment. Expect the task mix—and, at some employers, staffing—to change rather than assume every entry-level support job will disappear.
What “Level 1” means—and what the evidence can tell you
“Level 1” is an employer-defined support tier, not a standardized occupation. Useful U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) comparisons include computer user support specialists and computer network support specialists; network and computer systems administrators are a related but broader category. These roles overlap with some Level 1 job descriptions, but none is a perfect stand-in for every employer’s title. The BLS identifies generative AI and offshoring as factors that could reduce the share of work done by computer user support specialists, and routine-task automation and substitution by adjacent roles as factors affecting network and systems administrators. There is no directly comparable published forecast isolating “Level 1 system and network engineers” across employers, countries and time horizons. BLS projections also describe outcomes under stated assumptions rather than promise what will happen; actual results can differ. Work is easier to automate when it is frequent, predictable, documented and safe to resolve through approved tools. Examples consistent with the BLS’s discussion of generative AI and routine-task automation include scripted account or password guidance, standard software setup instructions, common connectivity checks, repetitive ticket categorization, knowledge-base retrieval and routine status updates. This is a task-level assessment, not evidence that these tasks have already been eliminated at a particular rate.

AI can also help a technician retrieve relevant documentation, draft a response or suggest diagnostic steps. A suggestion is not proof that a change is safe or that it fixed the underlying issue: procedures, permissions and system telemetry still matter. Support staff need to validate recommendations before acting on them.
What is harder to replace outright?
Some incidents do not match a script: symptoms may be incomplete, several systems may be involved, or a routine fix may fail. Support workers also gather context from users, coordinate access and approvals, decide when to escalate, and verify whether a solution worked in the user’s actual environment. Hands-on work can require physical access. These are reasoned distinctions based on the range of skills associated with IT support and reports of expanding human support responsibilities; the available sources do not measure an automation rate for each task.

The AI Workforce Consortium’s 2025 IT Support Technician profile includes hardware and software installation, networking, operating-system troubleshooting, documentation, communication, customer service and problem solving. It also lists emerging skills such as AI diagnostics, automated troubleshooting, predictive maintenance, remote-support AI and ticket intelligence. What workforce surveys do—and do not—say
Gartner reported that 85% of surveyed service and support leaders were expanding frontline agent responsibilities, while 31% had implemented or planned AI-related frontline layoffs through the first quarter of 2027. The survey covered 321 leaders worldwide and was conducted in September and October 2025; the figures were reported in an April 28, 2026 announcement. They concern service and support leaders broadly, not specifically IT help desks or network-engineering teams. The World Economic Forum estimates that AI and information-processing technology will create 11 million jobs and displace 9 million by 2030 across the labor market. It also reports that 77% of surveyed employers plan to reskill or upskill existing workers by 2030. These are broad employer expectations and estimates, not a forecast for Level 1 IT support; they should not be combined with Gartner’s differently scoped survey as if the figures measure the same population. How to make an entry-level IT path more resilient
Build the habits that help with both human-led troubleshooting and AI-assisted support: collect symptoms clearly, reproduce an issue when possible, isolate likely causes, document what you tried, verify the result and escalate with useful evidence. Pair those habits with practical foundations: networking, Windows and Linux basics, software installation, remote-support tools, and account and endpoint concepts. Clear user communication is technical work too: it helps you get accurate information, set expectations and coordinate a resolution.

As you gain experience, deepen your understanding of networking, operating systems, cloud administration, security basics and scripting. These skills can prepare you to take on more complex work, but no certification, tool or skill set guarantees a job. Use AI tools to draft or retrieve information when appropriate, and check suggestions against approved procedures and available evidence.

- Repeatability: A role dominated by scripted fixes and high-volume routine tickets may face more automation pressure than one that regularly handles novel incidents.
- Access and accountability: Work involving identity, endpoints, networks or change control calls for careful permissions and operational judgment.
- Interaction and coordination: User communication, expectation-setting and coordination across teams remain important when a problem cannot be resolved automatically.
- Technical development: Look for opportunities to learn systems beyond the initial script—such as operating systems, networking, cloud administration, security and automation.
- Employer and location: Outsourcing, cloud migration, regulation, user population and systems mix all affect demand. Available evidence does not provide a precise Level 1 forecast by country or employer type.
Ask what proportion of the job is scripted ticket handling, what issues the team escalates, which systems you will learn, and whether automation changes how technicians work or reduces positions. The answers are more useful for assessing a particular opening than a broad prediction about AI and “Level 1” jobs.
