Choose by the kind of Halloween display you want. Halloween Pumpkin (40697) is the safest choice for a very small shelf, Halloween Pumpkin Lantern (40872) adds an illuminated centerpiece, Haunted Mansion (31167) is the play-oriented option with three rebuilds, and Halloween Skull Candle (40883) suits a candle-and-skeleton display with glow-in-the-dark details.

Pick the set by the space you actually have
For a narrow shelf, sill or desk corner
The Halloween Pumpkin has the smallest documented footprint in this comparison. Its 3-by-3-inch width and height, with 4.5 inches of depth, make it the least demanding option for a window ledge, bookcase cubby or crowded desk. Measure usable depth rather than the shelf’s advertised depth: a rear lip, wall trim or cable can reduce the space available to the model.

For a compact display with a lighting effect
The Pumpkin Lantern occupies slightly more room but remains compact. LEGO lists it at over 4 inches high, 5 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. Leave clearance above it if the shelf is under a cabinet, and keep the front visible so the light brick and ghost are not hidden behind other decorations.
When the available area is unknown
Do not assume the Haunted Mansion or Skull Candle will fit a particular shelf. The cited LEGO material does not give a comparable completed footprint for either set. If one of these is your preferred design, confirm the current product specifications or plan a flexible location such as a tabletop before buying.
Halloween Pumpkin (40697): the smallest measured choice
This 254-piece model is the straightforward answer for a builder who wants a recognizable seasonal object without committing a large display zone. LEGO labels it for ages 9 and up. The compact footprint also makes it practical when several decorations must share one surface.

- The measured depth is greater than the width, so place it with the rear edge fully supported rather than balancing it on a narrow front lip.
- Its low profile is suitable for a desk, bedside table or a shelf below eye level.
- A single pumpkin can stand alone, while multiple small decorations can be arranged around it without giving up an entire mantel.
Who should choose it
Choose this set when physical space is the deciding constraint, when the recipient prefers a single finished ornament, or when you want the least involved piece count among the measured pumpkin options. The age label does not prove that every nine-year-old will find it easy, nor that an experienced adult will find it challenging; prior building experience remains the better guide.

Halloween Pumpkin Lantern (40872): a lighted centerpiece
The Pumpkin Lantern increases the build to 323 pieces and adds a light brick. It also includes a ghost minifigure that glows in the dark. LEGO lists the set for ages 9 and up and gives a footprint of over 4 inches high by 5 inches wide by 4.5 inches deep.
What the extra size buys you
The additional height and width create a stronger focal point than a small pumpkin, while the light brick changes the display after dark. The effect is functional rather than merely printed decoration: place it where the front and interior remain visible, and avoid a location where surrounding objects block the glow.
Plan for lighting safely
- Put the model on a stable, level surface; do not place it on a moving windowsill or a ledge that can be bumped.
- Check the light controls before arranging nearby decorations so you do not have to dismantle the display to operate it.
- Keep the model away from real candle flames, heat sources and moisture. A light brick is not a substitute for a flame-rated lantern.
This is the strongest fit when the display itself is the goal and you want a visible evening effect without moving to the scale of a large play set.

With 736 pieces and five minifigures, Haunted Mansion is substantially more involved by part count than the two pumpkin sets. LEGO presents three alternate builds: a haunted house, a ship or a train. The product specification explicitly notes, “Please note that models cannot be built simultaneously.”

Choose it for interaction, not a guaranteed footprint
The three configurations make this the most flexible choice for children or families who want to rebuild and invent stories. You can switch the form to suit a play session, then rebuild it for a different display. Because only one configuration can exist at a time, it is better understood as three possible experiences than as a single display containing all three vehicles or structures.
What to check before it comes home
- Reserve a work surface large enough to sort and stage 736 pieces during construction.
- Decide where the completed model will live before opening the box; LEGO’s cited page does not provide a comparable finished footprint.
- Expect more sorting, subassemblies and rebuild decisions than with a compact pumpkin, without treating the piece count as a formal difficulty rating.
This set makes sense when play value and character interaction outweigh the need for a precisely measured shelf fit.
Halloween Skull Candle (40883): a decorative gothic look
The Skull Candle is another LEGO seasonal option labeled for ages 9 and up. Its design includes a gold tooth, alternative eye details—including a glow-in-the-dark pair—spiders, a web and a poison bottle. The cited seasonal page does not state a piece count or completed dimensions.
Why its visual language is different
Unlike the pumpkin models, this set is styled as a skull-shaped candle arrangement. The interchangeable eye treatment lets you choose between a conventional look and a glow-in-the-dark accent. Spiders, web elements and the poison bottle add small scene-setting details for a mantel or Halloween vignette.

How to judge the space requirement
Because the reviewed listing lacks a comparable footprint, do not rank this set as smaller or larger than the pumpkins from its appearance alone. Measure the intended surface and verify current specifications if the fit is critical. It is a good candidate when the decoration theme matters more than a precise size target.
Skill level: use age and part count carefully
All four sets covered here carry a 9+ recommendation in the cited LEGO listings. That label is an age-guidance statement, not a test result. It does not account for a builder’s patience, familiarity with LEGO instructions, comfort with small pieces or interest in rebuilding.
A practical matching method
- Start with experience. A first-time builder may prefer the compact pumpkin format, while someone who routinely follows long instruction sequences may welcome the mansion’s larger project.
- Separate construction from play. A builder can handle a substantial model but still prefer a simple display object, or enjoy rebuilding more than finishing a permanent ornament.
- Use piece count as workload information. The documented counts range from 254 to 736, but they do not reveal how many steps, repeated subassemblies or delicate techniques each instruction book contains.
- Ask about supervision. For younger builders near the 9+ threshold, an adult can help with sorting and troubleshooting without taking over the build.
No independent build-time estimate or comparative difficulty score is established for these products, so avoid promises such as “finishes in an afternoon” or “easiest set” unless you have evidence specific to the builder.

Display effect versus play value
| If the priority is… | Best match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum measured footprint | Halloween Pumpkin | Smallest documented dimensions in this group |
| Internal illumination | Halloween Pumpkin Lantern | Includes a light brick and a glow-in-the-dark ghost |
| Rebuilding and storytelling | Haunted Mansion | Three alternate models and five minifigures |
| Skull-and-candle styling | Halloween Skull Candle | Gold tooth, alternate eye details, spiders, web and poison bottle |
“Best” depends on the effect you want. A glowing lantern is not automatically better than glow-in-the-dark eyes, and a rebuildable mansion is not automatically better than a compact ornament for a small apartment.

A decision checklist before you buy
- Measure the destination. Record usable width, depth and overhead clearance, including trim, rails and nearby objects.
- Choose the interaction level. Select a fixed seasonal ornament, a lighted centerpiece or a rebuildable play model.
- Match the builder. Use the 9+ label as a starting point, then consider experience, patience and whether the recipient enjoys repeated rebuilding.
- Confirm unlisted dimensions. For Haunted Mansion and Skull Candle, obtain current specifications before committing to a tight shelf.
- Check price and stock by region. The figures above are a dated US snapshot, not a universal price list.
- Plan the display conditions. Keep builds stable, dry and away from open flames; leave access to any light controls.
If the answers point in different directions, prioritize the hard constraint first. A model that cannot safely fit the intended surface is the wrong choice regardless of its theme or piece count.
