How to Free Up Disk Space Before Installing a PC Game

Use Windows storage tools to check what is taking up room, clean only what you understand, and move a game to another supported drive if needed.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the free space on the drive where the game will be installed, then use Windows’ storage tools to identify safe cleanup options before deleting anything. Start with temporary files and files you no longer need; move wanted personal files elsewhere or use another game-library drive if cleanup is not enough. There is no universal amount of free space that every PC game needs beyond its own current requirement, so compare the game’s listed requirement with the installer’s estimate.

1. Check the drive the game will use

Open File Explorer, select This PC, and look under Devices and drives. Check the available space on the drive that will receive the installation, not just the drive where Windows is installed. If the game launcher lets you choose an install location, confirm that destination before deciding what to clean.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Next, check the game’s current storage requirement and the amount of space its installer says it needs. These figures are game-specific; they can differ, and there is no general free-space buffer established for all games. Windows may show how much space selected cleanup items could recover, but that estimate is specific to your PC and your selections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if the game is set to install on a second drive, clearing files from the Windows drive will not solve a shortage on that destination. Conversely, if the launcher defaults to the system drive, having plenty of room on another drive may not help until you change the installation location. Recheck the install path in the launcher rather than assuming it will choose the drive with the most free space.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

After each cleanup or file move, return to This PC and check the destination drive again. Microsoft recommends checking whether each action freed enough room before moving on to the next one. That makes it easier to stop as soon as the installation can proceed, rather than deleting files you wanted to keep.

2. Find what is using space in Windows

In Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. The categories help you identify where to look, but the size of a category alone does not tell you whether its contents are safe to remove.

Open Cleanup recommendations if it is available. Windows can surface temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and apps you may not use. Review the proposed items and the displayed estimate of space saved before selecting anything. Labels and layout can vary by Windows version or update.

Use the cleanup estimate as a guide to prioritizing actions, not as a promise that a particular amount will become available on another drive. If the suggested recovery is enough for the game’s installer, there is no need to proceed to more disruptive options.

Think of the Storage page as a map, not a delete list. A large Installed apps category may include software you rely on, while a large personal folder may contain files you can move instead of discard. The relevant question is not simply which category is largest, but which items are replaceable, no longer wanted, or safely stored somewhere else.

3. Choose the cleanup method that matches the files

Option What it can do Check before using it
Cleanup recommendations Offers suggested categories, including temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, unused apps, and previous Windows installations. Windows displays an estimated recovery amount for the selected items. Review the selection item by item. A recommendation is not a reason to remove something you still need.
Storage Sense Can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Its defaults do not manage Downloads or cloud content unless configured, and it works on the system drive.
Disk Cleanup Lets you select temporary and system files for removal. Read the selected categories carefully, especially before removing files related to a previous Windows installation.
Move personal files Frees room on the game drive while keeping files on connected storage such as a USB drive or SD card. Make sure the destination is connected and the files are actually moved there before deleting the originals.
Move or install a game on another library drive Can avoid clearing the original drive when the launcher supports another library location. Check the launcher’s own instructions, the destination drive’s available space, and whether game saves are backed up or synced.

The main difference between these options is what happens to the data. Deleting a file removes it, though a Recycle Bin copy can remain until the bin is emptied. Moving a file keeps it on another connected drive. Making a cloud-synced file online-only removes its local copy while leaving it available through the cloud service when you have a network connection. Those actions are not interchangeable, so choose based on whether you need the file offline and whether you want to keep it.

Use Storage Sense for selected routine cleanup

Storage Sense is Windows’ built-in option for automatically freeing space by removing items you do not need, such as selected temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Review its settings before relying on it for a one-time game installation: by default, it does not clean the Downloads folder or cloud content, and its cleanup scope is the system drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft says that files made online-only in OneDrive are not permanently deleted; they can be made local again when there is enough space and a network connection. This is different from deleting a local file outright. Check what a setting will do before enabling it, particularly if you need files available offline.

Storage Sense is therefore not a shortcut for clearing every drive or every personal folder. If the game is going to a non-system drive, verify that the drive you need to free is within the cleanup action’s scope. If Downloads is where the large files are, review that folder yourself rather than expecting the default Storage Sense behavior to clean it.

Use Disk Cleanup for files you have reviewed

Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, open it, and select the drive to inspect. Choose only the file categories you understand and want to remove. Disk Cleanup can include temporary and system files, but it should not be treated as a blanket instruction to clear every category offered. If a selection refers to a previous Windows installation, read the rollback warning in the next section first.

When choosing among cleanup options, compare the Windows estimate with the consequence of the action. A temporary-file cleanup may be a reasonable first step if the selected items are not needed. A previous Windows installation has a different tradeoff because removing it also removes the ability to use those files to return to the earlier version. If an estimate is small and the files are important or uncertain, leave them and look for a safer source of space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Remove or move personal files deliberately

Microsoft identifies Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads as folders that often hold large personal files. In File Explorer, inspect these folders and sort by size to find large items. Delete only files you no longer want, or move infrequently used files you want to keep to connected external storage, such as a USB drive or SD card.

A move is useful when the file matters but does not need to stay on the game drive. Confirm that the destination has enough space and that the moved file opens from its new location before removing any remaining copy. If you delete files, they may remain in the Recycle Bin; empty it only when you are sure you do not need to restore them. Otherwise, that deletion may not release the space you expected.

For a safer pass, look through files in size order and handle a few at a time. A large video you have already backed up may be a better candidate to move than a folder of pictures you have not copied elsewhere. Before emptying the Recycle Bin, check its contents: emptying it is the step that removes the opportunity to restore those deleted files from the bin.

Uninstall an app only if you no longer want it. Windows’ Installed apps category and cleanup recommendations can help you locate candidates, but the decision should be based on whether you still use the app, not simply on its size. Removing an installed app is different from deleting a large personal file: make sure you are comfortable reinstalling or no longer using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external USB drive or SD card can be a practical place for personal files you want to retain but do not use often. It is an optional storage purchase, not a requirement for installing a game. Keep in mind that storing personal files externally is a different use from running a game launcher or game installation from that drive; for Steam, see the external-drive warning below.

5. Do not remove Windows rollback files casually

Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup may offer to remove a previous Windows installation. Those files can let you return to the previous Windows version. Microsoft warns that deleting them cannot be undone and that you will no longer be able to restore that earlier version using those files.

Use this option only if recovering that rollback ability is less important to you than reclaiming the space. If you are unsure whether you may need to revert Windows, leave the files in place and try less consequential cleanup or another game-drive location first.

This is a particularly important case where the biggest displayed recovery estimate is not automatically the best choice. The value of the space depends on what you are giving up. If the PC was recently updated and you still want the option to roll back, preserving those files may be worth more than getting the game installed immediately; try personal-file moves or another supported library location first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Use another game-library drive when cleanup is not enough

If the PC has another suitable drive with enough room, installing the game there may be preferable to removing files you want. An additional internal drive can serve as another library location if the PC supports it; the Windows and launcher guidance does not establish compatibility or recommend a particular drive specification. Check the drive’s available space and the game’s installation requirements before choosing it.

Whether to use another drive depends on the launcher’s capabilities and the type of drive. An internal drive avoids using the space on the full destination, but the PC must support the drive and the launcher must allow a library there. An external drive can be useful for moving personal files; Steam specifically cautions against installing Steam itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. Do not treat external storage as the default game-install destination just because it has room.

For Steam: add a library location or move an installed game

  1. Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage.
  2. Create an additional library location on the drive you want to use, if one is not already listed.
  3. For a game already installed, use the Move option in Storage for the selected game and choose the other library location.
  4. For a new installation, select the library on the intended drive in the installation flow and check that drive’s available space before proceeding.

These are Steam-specific controls; another launcher may have different options or may not support moving an installation from its settings. Consult that launcher’s own storage or installation controls rather than assuming Steam’s path applies.

After choosing a new library, confirm the game is being installed or moved to that location rather than simply creating a library and leaving the install path unchanged. Steam’s Storage page is where its additional locations and installed-game move controls are managed. For other launchers, check the current client instructions because names, options, and supported move paths can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam advises against installing Steam on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. External storage is still useful for moving personal files you want to keep, which can free internal-drive space without making the external drive the place Steam itself runs from.

Protect saves before relocating a full installation

Steam notes that many third-party game saves not covered by Steam Cloud may be in DocumentsMy Games, but each game developer determines where that game stores saves. Do not assume that a game’s saves will move with its installed files or be synchronized. Before moving a full Steam installation, verify the save location and whether the game’s saves are backed up or synced; copy important saves somewhere safe if needed.

Distinguish between moving a game through the launcher and moving an entire Steam installation. The documented Steam Storage controls move selected installed games between library locations. If you are considering relocating the full client, first check the specific game’s save arrangements: Steam Cloud may not cover every third-party save, and a save location varies by game. A game that appears in the cloud or launcher is not proof that every local save is protected.

7. If space disappears again, troubleshoot the cause

If cleanup appears to work but the system drive quickly fills again, do not start deleting arbitrary Windows or game folders. Microsoft documents a specific case in which the Temp folder can refill with Microsoft Store app package files after cleanup. For that problem, its guidance is to reset the Store, clear its cache with wsreset.exe, run the relevant troubleshooters, and restart the PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and run it to clear the Store cache.
  2. Use the relevant Windows troubleshooters for the Store issue described in Microsoft’s guidance.
  3. Restart the PC, then check Settings > System > Storage and the drive’s available space again.

This is a targeted response to the described Microsoft Store-related Temp-folder problem, not a general cleanup recipe for every drive that fills up. If you do not recognize that pattern, return to the Storage categories and inspect which area has grown. Deleting random files from Windows directories can remove items Windows or an app needs and does not establish why the space is returning.

For other recurring storage problems, inspect the Storage categories and cleanup estimates again so you can see which area is growing. Avoid manually removing files from Windows system directories or game folders as a general first response; those files may be needed for Windows or the game to work correctly.

A practical order of operations

  • Confirm the destination drive and compare its free space with the game’s current requirement and installer estimate.
  • Review Settings > System > Storage and Cleanup recommendations, selecting only items you understand.
  • Use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup for appropriate temporary items, checking the scope and selections first.
  • Sort large personal files by size; delete only what is unwanted, or move files you want to keep to connected storage.
  • Check the destination drive again. If you still need room, use another supported launcher library location rather than deleting system folders blindly.
  • Before moving a full game installation, verify how its saves are stored and protected.

The stopping point is simple: once the intended drive has enough space for the game’s current requirement and the installer’s stated need, stop cleaning. There is no source-backed universal margin to add for every game, and a displayed estimate is specific to the selected items on your PC. If the installer still reports that space is insufficient, recheck the selected install drive and its available space before deleting anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much free space do I need to install a PC game?

There is no universal number or free-space buffer that applies to every PC game. Check the game’s current storage requirement and the installer’s estimate, then compare them with the available space on the drive selected for installation.

Why does my PC still say there is not enough space when another drive has room?

The launcher may still be set to install on a different drive, such as the system drive. Confirm the actual installation destination in the launcher, check that drive in File Explorer under This PC, and change the destination only if the launcher supports it.

Does Storage Sense clean my Downloads folder or every drive?

Not by default. Microsoft says Storage Sense does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless configured, and it works on the system drive. Review its settings and manually inspect Downloads if that is where you expect to find large files.

Can I use an external drive to free space?

Yes. Microsoft identifies connected USB drives and SD cards as options for moving personal files you want to keep but do not use often. Steam warns against installing Steam on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues, so distinguish using it for personal files from running Steam itself there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will moving a Steam game also move or protect its saves?

Do not assume that it will. Steam says many third-party saves not covered by Steam Cloud may be in Documents\My Games, but save locations are determined by each game’s developer. Verify the specific game’s save location and backup or sync status before relocating a full installation.

Is it safe to delete a previous Windows installation to make room?

It can free space, but those files allow you to return to the previous Windows version. Microsoft warns that deleting them cannot be undone and removes that rollback option. Leave them in place if you may need to revert.

What should I do if the space fills up again after cleanup?

Check Settings > System > Storage to see which category is growing rather than deleting arbitrary system or game folders. For a specific Microsoft Store-related case where Temp refills with app package files, Microsoft’s steps include clearing the Store cache with wsreset.exe, running the relevant troubleshooters, and restarting.

The Bottom Line

Check the drive the installer will use, compare its available space with the game’s current requirement and installer estimate, then reclaim space in the least disruptive way: reviewed temporary items, unwanted files, or moved personal files. If that is not enough, use another library location only if the launcher supports it, and verify game saves before moving a full installation. Avoid deleting rollback or system files unless you understand what you will lose.
