Give it a brief settling period, but do not assume unusually fast drain will resolve on a fixed schedule. If it continues after a few days, Google advises contacting support. In the meantime, check Battery usage, keep adaptive battery features enabled, and adjust display or background settings that suit your needs.
Why a Pixel may use more battery after an update
After an update, a Pixel can use extra power while it downloads and optimizes software. Google describes a little more drain than usual after an update as normal, but does not promise a specific recovery time. The guidance is to seek help if unusual drain continues after a few days. Google’s battery-drain guidance

That temporary explanation is not proof that an update caused every battery problem. The exact Pixel model, Android version, update, and symptoms matter, and none are specified here. If the phone is still losing charge unusually quickly after a few days, treat that as a problem to investigate rather than waiting indefinitely.
Use the settling period as an observation window
During the first short period after an update, use the phone normally and note the pattern instead of making many changes at once. Record roughly when the update finished, when the faster drain became noticeable, and whether it happens during active use, while the phone is idle, or both. This gives you a useful comparison when you check Battery usage or speak with Google.

A little extra activity immediately after the update does not mean the battery is permanently damaged. Conversely, “normal after an update” does not mean every level of drain should be ignored. Google’s guidance uses “after a few days” as the point at which persistent unusual drain deserves support; it does not define a guaranteed number of hours or a universal optimization schedule.
Separate a battery-life complaint from a charging problem
First make sure the symptom is actually faster discharge. A phone that charges slowly, stops charging, or reports an unexpected percentage may need a different investigation than one that reaches a normal full charge but runs down quickly. This guide focuses on use-time drain after an Android update. Describe any charging symptom separately if you contact Google so support can evaluate the complete pattern.
Check what is using the battery
Review app and system usage
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review View by apps and View by systems, if those views appear on your Pixel.
- Look for a recently downloaded app or a system component that stands out in relation to when the drain occurs.
Usage values may be rounded, so the displayed amounts do not necessarily add up to exactly 100%. A high figure is a clue to investigate, not by itself proof that an app is malfunctioning. Google explains how to review these figures in its Pixel battery-level and usage help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the time range represented by the screen before drawing conclusions. A recently opened navigation, video, camera, or other demanding app can appear prominent simply because it was used heavily. Compare the entry with what you actually did and with when the drain started. An app that remains prominent while you are not using it is more useful to investigate than an app that was active for most of the day.
Interpret “apps” and “systems” together
The app view helps identify downloaded applications and their background activity. The systems view can show activity attributed to the operating system or built-in components. A system entry is not automatically something you should stop or remove. It may be part of the normal work that follows an update, and essential services can be affected by aggressive intervention.
Use the two views to form a timeline: identify when the unusual drain occurred, then see whether an app or system entry rose during that same period. If no single item stands out, do not keep changing settings at random. Continue with the low-risk checks below and escalate if the unusual pattern remains after a few days.
Review an app’s background use
If a downloaded app stands out, open its battery settings and review its background-use setting. Leave the app on Optimized in ordinary cases; restricting background activity may affect notifications or other functions. Force-stop or uninstall only an app that is clearly causing a problem. Do not force-stop essential services such as Google Play services. Google’s troubleshooting guidance

If the app is essential to your daily routine, keeping it optimized is generally the safer default while you collect more information.
Force-stopping several apps at once also makes the Battery usage screen harder to interpret. Change one clearly implicated downloaded app, if necessary, and then observe. Never treat a built-in service as an ordinary app just because its name appears near the top of the list.

Keep Pixel battery optimization enabled
Check that Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization are still enabled. Adaptive Battery learns from how you use the phone and can reduce activity from apps you use less often; turning optimization off can remove that help. The names and menu locations can differ between Android releases, so use Settings search if you cannot find a label. Google’s Pixel battery-life guidance
Optimization is a sensible default, not a diagnosis or guarantee. If one app is responsible for persistent background use, inspect that app individually rather than disabling adaptive features across the phone.

What Adaptive Battery does and does not tell you
Adaptive Battery is designed to learn which apps you use less often and reduce their activity. It does not identify the cause of a post-update drain, and it cannot promise a particular percentage improvement. Leaving it enabled lets the phone apply its normal adaptive behavior while you investigate a specific problem.
After an update, verify the setting rather than assuming it stayed as you prefer. Android releases can rename or move controls, and not every Pixel exposes exactly the same choices. If a menu in these instructions is missing, search Settings for “battery” or “optimization” and use the equivalent control offered on your model.
Reduce display and feature drain where the tradeoff works for you
Display choices and continuously active features can affect battery use. These adjustments can reduce drain, but they do not establish that an Android update has a bug. Availability varies by Pixel model and Android version; change only the settings your phone offers.
| Setting to consider | What to change | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Lower screen brightness. | The display may be harder to see in bright surroundings. |
| Screen timeout | Choose a shorter timeout. | The screen turns off sooner while you are reading or looking at it. |
| Dark theme | Try Dark theme if available. | It changes the appearance of the interface; the amount of battery benefit is not specified in Google’s guidance. |
| Always-on Display | Turn it off if your Pixel offers it and you do not need the persistent display. | You will no longer see always-on information on the screen. |
| Smooth Display | Turn it off if available and you accept the display tradeoff. | Scrolling and motion may look less smooth. |
| Hotspot or tethering | Turn it off when you are not sharing the connection. | Other devices will lose that connection. |
Google lists these kinds of battery-saving options in its guide to getting the most life from a Pixel battery. No percentage savings are established for these changes, so judge the result by your own use rather than expecting a particular improvement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Change settings deliberately
You do not need to apply every option. If the screen is the largest part of your usage, try brightness and timeout first. If you rarely need information visible while the phone is idle, Always-on Display may be an acceptable tradeoff to disable. If smooth scrolling matters more than a modest potential reduction in display activity, leave Smooth Display on. The right choice depends on how you use your Pixel.
Hotspot and tethering deserve a specific check because they can remain active after another device has finished using the connection. Turn them off when you are done sharing. Doing so disconnects the other devices, so make the change only when that connection is no longer needed.
Dark theme changes the interface and may be worth trying if you prefer it. Google does not provide a universal savings figure for it, so do not judge the update or the phone by an expected percentage. Treat each setting change as an experiment and observe whether your ordinary pattern improves.

Restart the phone and install available updates
- Restart your Pixel.
- Open Settings > System > Software update and check for an available Android update.
- Open Google Play and install available app updates.

A restart is a low-risk way to begin after reviewing your usage. It also gives you a clear point from which to observe the phone again. Do not interpret one short period after restarting as definitive; compare the same kind of use over a reasonable observation window.
Check Google Play separately from the Android system update screen. An app update may address an app-specific problem, but installing updates is not proof that an app caused your drain. If no updates are offered, simply continue with the other checks rather than repeatedly refreshing the screens.
Use diagnostics or contact Google if the drain persists
If unusual drain continues after a few days, contact Google support rather than assuming it is still ordinary post-update optimization. Google lists Battery diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later; if you have one of those models, use the diagnostic option available on your device. Menu labels and availability can vary by model and Android version. Google’s battery-level help
Battery diagnostics is model-qualified: Google identifies it as available on Pixel 6 and later. Do not assume an older Pixel has the same menu, and do not infer that the absence of the option means the battery is healthy or unhealthy. Use the controls your phone actually provides.
Prepare useful details for support
When seeking help, note when the update occurred, when the drain began, whether the phone gets warm or loses charge while idle, and any app or system entry that stood out in Battery usage. These details describe the pattern without presuming the cause.
Also include your exact Pixel model and Android version, since menu options and available diagnostics vary. Explain which settings you changed, whether you restarted, and whether Android or Play Store updates were available. A concise timeline is more useful than a claim that an update is universally defective.
If the drain is intermittent, describe when it happens and what the phone was doing. If it is continuous, say whether it occurs during screen-off idle time as well as active use. Keep screenshots or notes of Battery usage if they help show the pattern, while remembering that displayed values can be rounded.
Do not start with a factory reset
A factory reset removes local data and apps, so it is not a reasonable first response to post-update drain. Google advises backing up before resetting. Try the lower-risk checks above and contact support if the problem persists before considering data-erasing troubleshooting. Google’s troubleshooting guidance

A reset also changes many variables at once and can make it harder to determine whether a particular app or setting was responsible. If Google eventually recommends one, verify that your important data is backed up and understand that locally stored data and installed apps will be removed. It should be a considered support step, not a routine reaction to a single day of faster drain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Model, Android version, and menu limitations
The exact Pixel model, Android release, update date, region, and symptom pattern all affect what you see. Some named options apply only to particular Pixel generations, and menu labels can move between Android releases. Always qualify a step with “if available on your Pixel” and use Settings search when a path differs.
Do not claim that a particular update caused a known bug without release-specific evidence. A post-update coincidence can overlap with a newly installed app, a changed usage pattern, or a feature left active. Battery usage and a clear timeline help separate those possibilities without requiring you to guess at the cause.
A practical decision table
| What you observe | Reasonable next step | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| A little extra drain immediately after updating | Allow a brief settling period and use the phone normally while watching the pattern. | Assuming a fixed recovery deadline or repeatedly changing every setting. |
| One downloaded app shows unusual background activity | Review that app’s battery setting and normally leave it on Optimized; restrict or remove it only if clearly problematic. | Force-stopping essential services or all apps indiscriminately. |
| Display or hotspot use dominates your routine | Adjust brightness, timeout, display options, or hotspot use according to your priorities. | Expecting a guaranteed percentage reduction. |
| Drain remains unusual after a few days | Use available Battery diagnostics on Pixel 6 or later and contact Google support. | Waiting indefinitely because all post-update drain is supposedly normal. |
| You are considering a reset | Back up first and discuss lower-risk steps with support. | Factory-resetting before checking usage and support guidance. |
What to expect from these steps
Settings changes may reduce battery use, while Battery usage can help identify an app or system activity worth investigating. Neither outcome proves that the update itself is responsible. Google’s stated threshold for escalation is persistent unusual drain after a few days; there is no guaranteed settling deadline or universal battery-improvement percentage.
The goal is not to make every Pixel behave identically. It is to establish whether the extra use is a short-lived consequence of software work, a setting or app you can address, or a persistent issue that needs Google’s help. Keep optimization enabled unless a specific app warrants review, make only changes whose tradeoffs you accept, and preserve your data before any destructive troubleshooting.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is extra Pixel battery drain after an Android update normal?
Google says a little more drain can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes new software. That does not come with a guaranteed timetable. If unusual drain continues after a few days, contact Google support.
How long should I wait before asking Google for help?
Use a brief settling period and watch the pattern. Google’s guidance says unusual drain that continues after a few days merits support; it does not promise that every phone will recover on an exact schedule.
Where can I see which app is draining my Pixel battery?
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, then review View by apps and View by systems when those views are available. Values can be rounded and may not total exactly 100%, so treat a high entry as a clue to investigate.
Should I turn off battery optimization for an app after an update?
Usually no. Leave the app on Optimized in ordinary cases. Restrict background use only when a downloaded app clearly causes a problem, and remember that restrictions can affect notifications or other functions.
Best Value
Can I force-stop Google Play services to save battery?
No. Google’s troubleshooting guidance warns against force-stopping essential services such as Google Play services. Investigate a clearly problematic downloaded app instead.
What display settings can improve Pixel battery life?
If available on your model, lower brightness, shorten screen timeout, try Dark theme, and consider turning off Always-on Display or Smooth Display. Each change has a usability tradeoff, and Google does not specify a universal savings percentage.
Should I turn off my Pixel’s hotspot?
Turn hotspot or tethering off when you are not sharing the connection. Other devices will lose that connection, so disable it only when they no longer need access.
Does restarting the Pixel help after an update?
Restarting is one of Google’s recommended troubleshooting steps. It is low risk, but it is not a guarantee that a persistent battery problem will be fixed.
Which Pixels have Battery diagnostics?
Google lists Battery diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later. Availability and menu labels can vary with the model and Android version, so use the diagnostic option shown on your phone if it is present.
Should I factory-reset my Pixel for post-update battery drain?
Not as an early step. A factory reset removes local data and apps. Check Battery usage, review settings, restart, install available updates, and contact Google first. If a reset is later recommended, back up your data beforehand.
Should I buy a charger or power bank to fix update-related drain?
A charger or power bank supplies charge but does not improve the phone’s battery life or identify the cause. The supported first steps are software and settings checks; seek support for persistent unusual drain.
What information should I give Google support?
Provide your Pixel model and Android version, the update date, when the drain began, whether the phone loses charge while idle or gets warm, the Battery usage entries that stood out, and the troubleshooting steps you already tried.
The Bottom Line
A little extra drain while a Pixel downloads and optimizes an Android update can be normal. Check Battery usage, leave Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, adjust display or hotspot settings only when their tradeoffs work for you, then restart and install available updates. If unusual drain remains after a few days, use Battery diagnostics when available and contact Google support rather than factory-resetting or buying hardware as a first response.
