Legendary and Mythical Pokémon are two separate official categories. Legendary Pokémon such as Dialga, Palkia, Zacian and Zamazenta are generally tied to a game’s main story or a defined in-game encounter. Mythical Pokémon such as Mew, Darkrai, Shaymin and Arceus have historically been distributed through special events or promotions. The labels describe classification and typical availability, not a universal ranking of strength.
The practical answer depends on the individual game and competition format. A title can change how a species is obtained, and tournament rules can allow or prohibit categories differently from one season or game to another.

The National Pokédex is the authoritative catalogue for species entries; its current page displays entries through Pokémon No. 1025 as of 2026. It is a useful reference for identity and official naming, but a Pokédex number does not by itself tell you how a species can be obtained or whether it is legal in a particular competition.

A story-linked official category
Legendary is an official classification, not a fan description for a Pokémon that looks imposing. Legendary species are commonly woven into a game’s mythology and plot. They may be the focus of the opening premise, the objective of a late-game quest or a major encounter that the player reaches after progressing through the story.

The official Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield site labels Zacian and Zamazenta as “The Legendary Pokémon.” That wording is an explicit category label, not an inference based on their appearance, base stats or popularity. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the official site separately lists Origin Forme Dialga and Origin Forme Palkia under a Legendary Pokémon heading.
How players usually obtain one
In many games, a Legendary Pokémon can be obtained through a defined encounter inside the game world. That might be a required story battle, an optional post-game quest or another encounter built into the title. There is no single rule that every Legendary can be caught exactly once, and the precise conditions differ among games, versions, downloadable content and remakes.
For an accurate answer, identify the exact game first, then consult that game’s official guide. A statement such as “you catch the Legendary after finishing the story” can be correct for one title and wrong for another. Version-exclusive encounters, expansions and remake changes can all affect the route.

What makes a Pokémon Mythical?
A separate classification with a history of special distribution
Mythical Pokémon are officially distinct from Legendary Pokémon. The Pokémon Legends: Arceus page demonstrates this separation by placing Darkrai, Shaymin in Land Forme and Arceus under a Mythical Pokémon heading while listing Dialga and Palkia under Legendary Pokémon. The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Mythical page likewise treats Mythical Pokémon as separate from newly discovered Legendary Pokémon.

The biggest practical difference for players has traditionally been availability. Mythicals have commonly been delivered through scheduled promotions, special events, distribution codes or similar limited opportunities rather than being a standard encounter on the main story route. That pattern is why many players remember Mythicals as harder to obtain than Legendaries.
However, “Mythical means event-only in every modern game” is too broad. A later game, remake or special feature can change the distribution method. Some titles may provide a Mythical through an in-game quest, a save-data bonus or another official mechanism. Always verify the current instructions for the specific game and region.
Examples
- Mew, Celebi and Jirachi: The Pokémon Company has included these species in Mythical distribution promotions.
- Darkrai and Shaymin: Both are listed as Mythical Pokémon on the official Pokémon Legends: Arceus page.
- Arceus: The same page lists Arceus as Mythical, even though its story importance and battle reputation can make it seem like a category of its own.
Rarity in ordinary play is a distribution pattern, not the definition of the category. A Mythical that becomes available through a later in-game feature remains Mythical because of its official classification.
How to tell whether a Pokémon is Legendary or Mythical
Use the current official label
When a species is disputed, use the Pokémon Company’s current wording for that species in the relevant game or official Pokédex. This is more reliable than a fan-made list, a video thumbnail or a conclusion based on how difficult the battle feels.
- Name the game and version. Include the platform, edition and any expansion if they affect availability.
- Check the official game page or Pokédex entry. Look for an explicit Legendary Pokémon or Mythical Pokémon heading or description.
- Check the game’s distribution notice. This establishes whether the title uses an event, code, quest or another method.
- Check the current competition rules separately. Classification and legality answer different questions.
Do not infer the category from appearance or strength
A large model, a unique typing, an unusual ability or a high stat total does not prove that a Pokémon is Legendary. Conversely, a small or cute design can still be Mythical. The categories are official labels, not visual or statistical tiers.

Do not treat every rare species as Mythical. A Pokémon can be difficult to find, restricted to one version or available only after a long quest without being Mythical. Likewise, an event distribution is a strong clue to Mythical status but is not a substitute for checking the official label, especially when a remake changes availability.
How do you get a Mythical Pokémon?
There is no universal method that applies to every Mythical or every game. The safest approach is to identify the exact title and follow its current official instructions.
Step 1: Identify the title, edition and region
Write down the game, version, platform and region in which you want to receive the Pokémon. Distribution windows, redemption menus and eligibility conditions can differ by region or edition. A promotion that ended in one title cannot be assumed to work in another.
Step 2: Find the official distribution announcement
Look for the publisher’s notice describing the event or in-game method. Record the start and end dates, whether a code is required, whether the offer is limited to one save file and whether an internet connection or account is needed. Treat an old social-media post or an unsourced list as historical information until the official page confirms that the offer is still active.
Step 3: Follow the stated redemption path
Use the exact menu or in-game quest named in the announcement. Enter codes carefully, claim the gift before the deadline and save after the game confirms receipt. If the method is a quest or save-data bonus rather than a code, complete every stated prerequisite before assuming the promotion is missing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 4: Confirm receipt and keep the record
Check the party, storage boxes or gift history specified by the game. Keep the original distribution information if you may later need to prove the Pokémon’s provenance for a trade or an organized event. If the promotion has expired, do not rely on unofficial downloads or generated files; wait for a new official distribution or use a title that provides a legitimate current method.
Step 5: Check transfer and trade limits
If you want to move the Pokémon to another game, verify that both titles support the transfer and that the receiving game accepts that species and form. A legitimate Mythical can still be unusable in a particular game, mode or competition because of software or rules restrictions.
Are Mythical Pokémon stronger than Legendary Pokémon?
No. Mythical status does not guarantee superior strength. Official sources establish two labels and recognizable distribution patterns; they do not publish a universal ranking in which every Mythical outranks every Legendary.
Individual performance depends on the species, level, moves, ability, held item, form, team role and ruleset. Some Mythicals have outstanding offensive or defensive tools. Some Legendaries have higher relevant stats, better abilities or a more useful role in a particular format. A species that dominates one battle environment can be restricted or ineffective in another.

Why old advice can be misleading
The Pokémon Company’s 2016 Mythical Pokémon Distribution Round-Up described Mythicals as so rare that players were not allowed to use them in the Pokémon Video Game Championships or most Pokémon Global Link tournaments. That sentence accurately describes the historical rules context of that article; it is not a permanent rule for every later competition.
Check the current rules hub
The Play! Pokémon rules hub links current video-game handbooks and legality resources. Read the handbook for the event you intend to enter, then check the permitted Pokédex, format restrictions, dates and any special clauses. A Pokémon can be obtainable in the game and still be excluded from a tournament.
Example of a current format-specific restriction
In one official 2026 Pokémon GO limited-meta format for the Europe International Championships, the rules state: “Ultra Beasts and Mega-Evolved, Legendary, and Mythical Pokémon are prohibited, too.” This is an example of a particular Pokémon GO format, not a rule that automatically governs every Pokémon game or every tournament.

Why the distinction matters to collectors and players
Planning an obtainable collection
Legendary encounters are often planned around story progress, post-game objectives or a defined location. Mythical acquisition is more dependent on announcements and deadlines. If completing a collection matters to you, track official distributions while they are active and note the game, date and method for each claim.
Understanding trade and transfer expectations
A trade partner may use “rare” as a catch-all term, but rare, Legendary and Mythical are not synonyms. Ask which official category applies, where the Pokémon came from and whether its form or game origin affects transfer. This avoids confusing a hard-to-find ordinary species with a Mythical distribution.
Keeping forms and game context straight
Official pages sometimes name a specific form, as the Pokémon Legends: Arceus page does with Origin Forme Dialga, Origin Forme Palkia and Land Forme Shaymin. Record the form as well as the species. A rule or transfer feature can apply differently to a particular form even when the species name is the same.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using a fan list as the final authority: Use the current official Pokémon label instead.
- Calling every event Pokémon Mythical: An event can distribute many kinds of Pokémon; verify the category.
- Assuming all Mythicals are unobtainable through ordinary gameplay: Distribution methods can change in later games, remakes and special features.
- Assuming all Legendaries are available in one guaranteed encounter: Encounter rules differ among titles and versions.
- Confusing category with power: Compare the individual species and the battle rules, not the label alone.
- Applying an old tournament ban to a current event: Read the current handbook and legality list.
- Ignoring region and deadline details: A promotion may have a limited window or edition-specific conditions.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the species explicitly labeled Legendary or Mythical by The Pokémon Company?
- Which game, version, form and region are you asking about?
- Is the question about classification, obtaining the Pokémon or using it competitively?
- For obtaining it, is there a current official quest, code or event, and has its deadline passed?
- For competition, what handbook, season and format govern the event?
- If sources disagree, does the newer official page clarify the label or method?
The bottom line
Legendary and Mythical Pokémon are separate official categories. Legendary species are generally integrated into a game’s story or a defined in-game encounter, while Mythicals have historically been rarer and distributed through special promotions. Neither label guarantees greater battle power, and neither one alone determines tournament legality. For a specific Pokémon, use the current official classification, the exact game’s distribution instructions and the rules for the exact event you plan to play.
