Yes—there is one official way to play Astro Bot without owning a PS5: stream it through a PlayStation Portal with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, provided cloud streaming supports your country, account and the game entitlement shown for your region. Sony identifies Astro Bot as a supported Portal cloud-streaming title and says supported PS5 games can be streamed without connecting to a PS5.
Other lawful arrangements still involve access to a PS5. Remote Play streams from someone else’s console, while borrowing or temporarily renting a console lets you play locally without buying one yourself. There is no official release documented for PC, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or mobile devices in the sources covered here.

What the official platform information says
Astro Bot is a PS5 game. Sony’s launch announcement states that the game launched on the PlayStation 5 console on September 6, 2024. The product listing identifies a PS5 version, Remote Play support and PS5/PlayStation Portal cloud streaming available only with a Premium subscription.

That distinction matters because “without buying a PS5” can mean two different things. You can avoid owning a console while still using one owned by another person, or you can avoid connecting to a console altogether through cloud streaming. Only the Portal cloud-streaming route removes the need for a host PS5 in your arrangement.

Your legal options at a glance
| Option | Is a host PS5 required? | What you need | Game entitlement | Network dependence | Portability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Portal cloud streaming | No, when the supported cloud service is available | PlayStation Portal, PlayStation Plus Premium, compatible account and region, internet connection | Check the catalog or ownership rule shown for your account; the sources do not establish one global entitlement rule | High; the game is rendered remotely | High within the limits of Wi-Fi and service availability |
| Remote Play from another PS5 | Yes; the game runs on that console | Authorized access to a PS5 with the game, a compatible Remote Play client and internet connection | The host account must have lawful access under applicable PlayStation rules | High; video and controls travel between the PS5 and client | Depends on where the host console and network are located |
| Borrow or temporarily rent a PS5 | Yes, but it can be physically with you | Lawful access to the console, the game and any required account | Use the owner’s or your own lawful entitlement as permitted by PlayStation terms | Low for local play after installation, apart from updates or account checks | Limited to the console’s location and loan period |
Prices, catalog inclusion and country availability are not universal. Sony’s official material does not provide one worldwide price or a single country matrix, so verify the current PlayStation page for your country before paying for hardware, a subscription or the game.
Option 1: PlayStation Portal cloud streaming
This is the closest match to the question “Can I play Astro Bot without a PS5?” Sony’s 2025 Portal cloud-streaming announcement explicitly names Astro Bot among the supported games and says Premium members can stream supported PS5 games without connecting to a PS5.
What this route does
- The game runs on Sony’s cloud infrastructure rather than on a console in your home.
- PlayStation Portal acts as the handheld screen and controller.
- You do not need to purchase or configure a PS5 as a host.
- You still need a PlayStation account in a supported country, the Premium tier and whatever game entitlement your regional listing requires.
How to set it up
- Check regional eligibility first. Sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use and review the current cloud-streaming availability for your country. Availability, supported titles and entitlement rules can change.
- Confirm the subscription tier. The documented tier for PS5 and Portal cloud streaming is PlayStation Plus Premium. Essential or Extra should not be assumed to provide this feature.
- Obtain a PlayStation Portal. Portal is the dedicated handheld referenced in Sony’s announcement. It is separate from a phone, tablet or ordinary Remote Play client.
- Connect Portal to a reliable network. Cloud play is sensitive to congestion, wireless interference and latency. The official sources do not publish a universal minimum speed for Astro Bot, so do not treat an internet-speed number from another game or service as an official requirement for this title.
- Sign in with the eligible account. Use the same account whose country, Premium subscription and game entitlement you checked.
- Open the cloud-streaming area on Portal. Firmware and menu wording can change; select the current cloud-streaming option, locate Astro Bot and follow the on-screen licensing prompt.
- Read the entitlement message before confirming. If the game is offered through a catalog, the listing should identify that. If it asks you to purchase or otherwise claim the game, that requirement applies to your account and region.
What can prevent launch
- Unsupported country: A Premium subscription alone does not guarantee that Portal cloud streaming is available where you live.
- Different account region: Eligibility follows the account and service region, not simply the physical location of the handheld.
- Catalog changes: A game can be added, removed or subject to different ownership rules over time. Check the live listing immediately before subscribing or buying.
- Network instability: A fast connection can still produce interruptions if latency or packet loss is high.
- Service maintenance: Cloud availability depends on Sony’s service status and capacity.
Cloud streaming is not Remote Play
These features can look similar on a handheld, but they solve different problems. Cloud streaming sends Astro Bot from Sony’s servers and does not require a PS5 connected to your account. Remote Play sends the game from a specific PS5 that must be powered, reachable and authorized for use.

| Question | Cloud streaming on Portal | Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Does a PS5 have to be available? | No host PS5 is required for the documented service | Yes; the host PS5 runs the game |
| Where is the game installed? | In the cloud service, subject to the listing and entitlement rules | On the host PS5 |
| Can you use a friend’s or household member’s console? | Not necessary | Potentially, if access is authorized and complies with account terms |
| What happens if the host console is switched off or offline? | There is no host console in this model | Remote Play cannot reach the game until the host is available |
Option 2: Remote Play from a PS5 you can lawfully access
Sony’s Astro Bot product page confirms Remote Play support. This allows the picture and controls from a host PS5 to be used on another supported device. It does not make Astro Bot a non-PS5 game: the PS5 remains the machine running it.
When Remote Play makes sense
- A household member owns a PS5 and agrees to let you use it.
- You can access a PS5 in another room but want to play on a different screen.
- You already have a lawful game entitlement on the account connected to the host console.
- You accept that play depends on the host console and its internet connection.
General setup sequence
- Arrange permission with the console owner. Do not use another person’s credentials or console without authorization.
- Prepare the host PS5. Install Astro Bot, sign in to the account permitted to play it and enable the console’s Remote Play function using the current system instructions.
- Install a supported Remote Play client. Sony’s documentation and software versions determine which phones, tablets, computers or other devices are currently supported. The official material cited for this article does not establish every client, resolution or controller combination, so check the current compatibility list for your device.
- Sign in with the authorized account on the client. The account relationship between the client and host determines whether the console can be found.
- Start Remote Play and select the PS5. Follow the client’s pairing prompts. The PS5 must be reachable and in the state required by Sony’s current Remote Play instructions.
- Launch the game from the streamed PS5 interface. Any save data, installed content and account permissions come from the host console.
Remote Play limitations
Remote Play is not a workaround for having no PS5 anywhere. Someone must own, maintain and authorize the host console. The experience also depends on both ends of the connection, so a strong network near the client cannot compensate for an unreliable host connection. Sony’s product information confirms support for Remote Play but does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate or controller configuration for every client.
Option 3: Borrow or temporarily rent a PS5
If you want local play rather than a streamed image, borrowing a console from a family member or friend is straightforward when the arrangement is authorized. A temporary rental can serve the same purpose, but the legality, condition, included accessories and account rules depend on the specific agreement. Sony’s official sources establish that Astro Bot is a PS5 title; they do not endorse a particular rental marketplace.

Questions to settle before accepting a loan
- Who owns the game license, and may your account use it under the applicable PlayStation terms?
- Will the owner provide the account access needed, or should you use your own purchased copy?
- Is the console updated and is there enough storage for the game and patches?
- Who pays for damage, loss, shipping or an extended rental period?
- Will you have an internet connection for sign-in, updates and any required service checks?
This route avoids buying a PS5 permanently, but it does not meet a stricter requirement of never using PS5 hardware. It is best understood as temporary access, not an alternative platform release.

Can you play Astro Bot on PC, PS4, Xbox, Switch or mobile?
The official sources reviewed for this title identify PS5 as the game platform and document Remote Play and PlayStation cloud streaming. They do not list a native PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS4 or mobile release.
That wording is deliberate. It means there is no documented official version on those platforms in the material available here; it does not promise that Sony can never announce another version. Do not buy a code, download or device on the assumption that an unofficial port, emulator or streaming client is authorized.

Costs and requirements you should verify
No single worldwide price can be stated responsibly. Subscription pricing, Portal retail pricing, taxes, promotions and game entitlements vary by country and can change. Before committing money, check these items on your regional PlayStation store or product page:
- Portal hardware price: the one-time cost of the handheld, plus any case, replacement controls or shipping you choose.
- Premium price: the recurring or prepaid cost of the PlayStation Plus Premium tier in your country.
- Game entitlement: whether Astro Bot is included in the applicable catalog for your account or must be purchased separately.
- Internet service: your own broadband or mobile-data costs; cloud play can consume substantial data.
- Borrowing or rental charges: deposits, delivery, insurance and late fees if you use a temporary-console arrangement.
Do not infer that the existence of a Premium subscription automatically means every supported title is included at no additional charge. The listing shown to your account is the authority for that transaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNetwork and quality troubleshooting
Cloud streaming will not start
- Confirm that your account country is eligible for Portal cloud streaming.
- Check that Premium is active rather than expired or attached to a different account.
- Open the current game listing and read whether ownership or another entitlement is required.
- Restart Portal, sign in again and check Sony’s service-status information if the listing is temporarily unavailable.
The picture is blurry or controls feel delayed
- Move closer to the wireless access point or use a less congested network.
- Pause other downloads, video streams and large uploads.
- Test at a different time of day to distinguish local congestion from a service issue.
- Remember that the official sources do not publish a universal speed target for this game; stability and latency matter as much as the headline download rate.
Remote Play cannot find the PS5
- Ask the owner to confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the host console.
- Verify that the host PS5 is powered or configured for the state required by Sony’s current instructions.
- Use the same authorized account and complete the client’s pairing process again.
- Check both the host and client networks, because either side can block the connection.
Account and legality precautions
Use your own account whenever possible and follow the owner’s permission and PlayStation’s terms when another person’s console or license is involved. Never purchase a suspicious account, share passwords, bypass regional restrictions or download an unauthorized copy merely because the official route is unavailable in your country. Those practices can expose you to account loss, malware, payment fraud and copyright violations, and they are not legal alternatives established by Sony’s platform information.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Portal cloud streaming if:
- You want to avoid owning or connecting to a PS5 entirely.
- Portal cloud streaming is available for your account and country.
- You are comfortable with a Premium subscription and possible separate game-entitlement requirements.
- You have a stable network and value handheld use.
Choose Remote Play if:
- You already have authorized access to a household member’s or friend’s PS5.
- You want to avoid buying hardware but can depend on that console being available.
- You accept that the host PS5 and its network determine whether you can play.
Borrow or rent if:
- You need local console play for a limited period.
- You can arrange a clear, lawful agreement covering the game, account, accessories and responsibility for damage.
- You do not require a solution that works with no PS5 hardware at all.
Bottom line
For a genuinely PS5-free setup, PlayStation Portal cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium is the documented official route, and Sony specifically lists Astro Bot as supported. Remote Play and temporary borrowing can also avoid purchasing a console, but both still depend on access to a host PS5. Before spending money, verify your country, account, Premium availability and the current entitlement shown for Astro Bot.
