Lean vs. Coq vs. Isabelle: Which Proof Assistant Is Right for You?

There is no universal winner. Choose Lean when you want modern mathematics in Mathlib and a functional programming language in the same environment; choose Coq (now commonly branded Rocq) when an established dependent-type development, certified programming workflow, or Coq-centered course is the deciding factor; choose Isabelle/HOL when your project is built around higher-order logic, structured theories, mature automation, and Isabelle’s document-oriented infrastructure. If you already have proofs, libraries, teaching material, or teammates in one system, that existing investment usually outweighs broad claims about which assistant is easiest or most popular.

The safest tie-breaker is practical: implement one small, representative theorem in the two systems you are considering, then compare library coverage, editor feedback, proof maintenance, build behavior, and how easily another person can review the script.

Lean, Coq/Rocq, and Isabelle at a glance

Assistant Logical foundation and style Best fit Main trade-off
Lean Dependent type theory, explicit proof objects, and a full functional programming language with metaprogramming. New formal mathematics, Mathlib-based work, and projects that combine proving with programming. Mathlib conventions and a fast-moving ecosystem become part of the learning curve; check version compatibility before committing.
Coq/Rocq A dependent-type formal proof-management system for definitions, executable algorithms, and machine-checked proofs. Existing Coq developments, certified programming, and courses or teams already using Coq tooling. Proof scripts and libraries are assistant-specific, so migration can be expensive; verify the branding and tool versions used by your project.
Isabelle/HOL Isabelle is a generic proof assistant; Isabelle/HOL uses higher-order logic and an LCF-style architecture rather than the dependent-type approach used by Lean and Coq. Structured HOL theories, mature automation, and projects that value Isabelle’s document and proof infrastructure. The concepts and workflow differ substantially from Lean and Coq, making course and tutorial alignment especially important.

All three are free software projects with online documentation. Their ecosystems are not interchangeable: a theorem formalized in one system normally needs to be expressed again in another system’s logic, libraries, syntax, and automation model.

What a proof assistant does

A proof assistant lets you state definitions, propositions, and theorems in a formal language and then checks proposed proofs with a trusted core. The result is more than a persuasive explanation: the system records a machine-checkable proof object or derivation. Depending on the assistant, the same environment can also define executable functions or algorithms.

The phrase “proof assistant” hides important differences. The underlying logic determines which constructions are natural. The proof language determines how you guide automation. The library determines whether common mathematics is already available. The editor and build tools determine how quickly you can diagnose an error. Finally, project history determines whether your team can reuse existing theories instead of starting over.

Lean: a theorem prover and programming language together

Foundation and programming model

Lean is based on dependent type theory and represents proofs as explicit objects. Its official FAQ makes a deliberately strong distinction: “Contrary to other proof assistants, Lean is a full-blown programming language.” That matters when a project needs both formal reasoning and executable functional code. Definitions, algorithms, proofs, and metaprograms can live in one language and one build environment.

Lean’s metaprogramming facilities also let users extend the elaborator, tactics, and other parts of the proving workflow. For a research group or library author, that can make domain-specific automation possible. The cost is that you are learning not only theorem statements and tactics but also Lean’s programming model and extension mechanisms.

Mathlib and mathematical fit

Mathlib is Lean’s community-driven mathematical library. It is the central reason Lean is often the strongest default for a new mathematics project: before proving a result from first principles, you can search for existing definitions, lemmas, structures, and APIs. The Lean community site provides Mathlib access, browser trials, tutorials, API documentation, and installation guidance for Linux, Windows, and macOS.

Library availability still requires judgment. A theorem may exist under an unfamiliar name, use a different definition than your draft, or target a different Lean and Mathlib version. Read the surrounding API and check the project’s version constraints rather than assuming that a result found in a web search will paste directly into your file.

Who should choose Lean

  • Choose Lean when your main question is whether modern mathematics can be formalized against a large shared library.
  • Choose it when the same project must contain functional programs and machine-checked proofs.
  • Choose it when browser experimentation, cross-platform installation, tutorials, API documentation, and an active community support channel are valuable to your team.

Lean is not automatically the easiest first assistant. Its conventions, rapidly evolving tools, and Mathlib’s breadth create a substantial vocabulary to learn. A course or organization pinned to another assistant may still make that other system the rational choice.

Coq, now commonly branded Rocq

What the system is designed to do

The project’s repository describes Coq as “a formal proof management system.” Its core uses include defining mathematical or computational objects, specifying executable algorithms, and constructing machine-checked proofs. The dependent-type foundation supports developments in which programs and correctness arguments are closely connected.

The name Coq remains common in documentation and existing code, while the project is now commonly branded Rocq. When joining a project, identify the exact name and release used by its build files, tutorials, and continuous-integration scripts. Renaming alone does not change the syntax or compatibility requirements of an existing development.

Certified programming and established developments

Coq/Rocq is a natural candidate when a team already has dependent-type proofs, certified algorithms, extraction or compilation workflows, and a library of project-specific definitions. Reusing that investment can save far more time than switching to a system that appears more attractive in a general comparison.

Coq’s strongest advantage is therefore often contextual rather than numerical. The cited project material provides installation and documentation links, but it does not provide a single current hardware matrix comparable to Isabelle’s published guidance. Plan installation around the requirements of the particular Coq/Rocq version and the libraries your project imports.

Who should choose Coq/Rocq

  • Choose it when your organization already maintains Coq proofs or depends on Coq-specific libraries and tooling.
  • Choose it for a certified-programming project whose definitions, executable algorithms, and proofs were designed in the Coq ecosystem.
  • Choose it when your course, supervisor, or collaborators teach and review Coq/Rocq scripts.

Do not choose it solely because a proof assistant comparison labels it powerful. The practical question is whether your intended development benefits from its existing ecosystem enough to justify learning its proof language and workflow.

Isabelle and Isabelle/HOL

Generic assistant, HOL instance

The Isabelle project describes Isabelle plainly: “Isabelle is a generic proof assistant.” Isabelle/HOL is its best-known object logic and uses higher-order logic. The architecture follows the LCF tradition, in which a small trusted kernel checks theorems while higher-level tools help construct proofs.

This is a different mental model from the dependent-type systems used by Lean and Coq. Isabelle/HOL users work with theories, definitions, lemmas, structured proof texts, and automation designed for higher-order logic. Someone comfortable with one family should expect to learn new concepts rather than merely translate syntax.

Structured theories and automation

Isabelle is a strong fit when the project values a readable theory-document workflow, mature automation, and a substantial body of existing Isabelle material. Its official site publishes releases, documentation, mailing lists, downloadable packages, and the Archive of Formal Proofs. Those resources matter for long-lived team projects because they provide places to study established theories and ask ecosystem-specific questions.

Current releases and hardware guidance

The current Isabelle site lists Isabelle2025-2, dated January 2026. A March 2025 Isabelle2025 release page gives resource guidance by project size:

Workload described by Isabelle Memory CPU
Small experiments 4 GB RAM 2 cores
Medium applications 8 GB RAM 4 cores
Large projects 16 GB RAM 8 cores
Extra-large projects 64 GB RAM 16 cores

These are Isabelle’s published guidance levels, not a benchmark predicting your exact build time. Imported theories, parallel checking, document generation, and other tools can change the practical requirement.

Who should choose Isabelle/HOL

  • Choose it when your existing theories, course, or research group is already based on Isabelle/HOL.
  • Choose it when higher-order logic and structured theory documents match the way you want to organize the work.
  • Choose it when Isabelle’s automation, Archive of Formal Proofs, release packages, and support lists fit your maintenance plan.

How the three differ on the decisions that matter

Decision axis Lean Coq/Rocq Isabelle/HOL
Logic Dependent type theory with explicit proof objects. Dependent-type formal proof management. Higher-order logic in the Isabelle/HOL instance, with an LCF-style architecture.
Programming Full functional language and theorem prover in one environment. Definitions and executable algorithms are central uses alongside proofs. Primarily organized around theories, proofs, and documents; choose it when that model fits better than a proof-and-programming language blend.
Automation and extension Strong metaprogramming and extensible proving workflow. Tooling and scripts are closely tied to Coq/Rocq developments. Mature automation integrated with structured theories and documents.
Library fit Mathlib is the key shared mathematics library. Best when the required libraries already exist in Coq/Rocq. Archive of Formal Proofs and Isabelle theories are important ecosystem assets.
Editor and feedback Lean’s modern interface, tutorials, API documentation, and browser trial lower the cost of experimentation. Use the editor and build workflow established by the project or course; verify version-specific documentation. Isabelle’s document-oriented workflow is part of the development experience.
Platform support Community installation guidance covers Linux, Windows, and macOS. The cited repository supplies installation and documentation links but no consolidated hardware matrix. Official bundles are published for Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Best compatibility signal Mathlib imports and Lean version in the target project. Existing Coq/Rocq scripts, libraries, extraction, and course materials. Isabelle release, object logic, theory imports, and document setup.

A decision guide by project situation

You are starting formal mathematics from scratch

Start with Lean if your mathematics is likely to benefit from Mathlib and you also want a programming language in the same environment. Use the browser trial and introductory material to test whether its syntax, elaboration messages, and library search feel productive before installing a larger local setup.

You are joining an existing formalization

Use the assistant already used by the repository unless there is a compelling, funded migration plan. A mature codebase contains definitions, naming conventions, automation, build scripts, and reviewer knowledge that cannot be replaced by downloading another assistant.

You need certified or executable programs

Compare Lean and Coq/Rocq against the exact code-generation and certification workflow your project requires. Lean’s language-and-prover combination is attractive for a unified functional codebase; Coq/Rocq is the safer choice when the algorithms and proofs already depend on Coq-specific definitions, libraries, or extraction tooling.

Your course teaches one assistant

Follow the course unless you are deliberately studying a second system. Instructor examples, automated grading, office hours, and assumed library versions can matter more than a general ranking. Isabelle/HOL terminology in particular differs enough from Lean and Coq that a course-aligned choice removes unnecessary translation work.

You value structured, document-centric formal work

Evaluate Isabelle/HOL first. Its generic-assistant design, higher-order logic, theory organization, document infrastructure, release packages, support lists, and Archive of Formal Proofs are designed for that style of work.

When two systems still look plausible: run a fair pilot

A small parallel exercise is more informative than claims about popularity or beginner success. No comparable primary statistic establishes a universal market leader, learner-success rate, or library-size ranking across all three assistants.

  1. Choose one representative task. Pick a theorem that uses the definitions, algebra, data structures, or automation your real project will need. Avoid a toy proposition that hides the actual difficulty.
  2. Pin versions. Record the Lean and Mathlib versions, Coq/Rocq release and libraries, or Isabelle release and object logic. A result from one version is not automatically portable to another.
  3. Locate library support. Measure how quickly you can find the relevant definitions and lemmas in each ecosystem, and note whether you must adapt your own definitions to match an existing API.
  4. Build the statement before optimizing the proof. Check that the formal statement expresses the intended mathematics or program property in each logic. A shorter proof of the wrong statement is not an advantage.
  5. Record interaction costs. Note error-message quality, editor feedback, autocomplete or search support, and how often you need to leave the editor for documentation.
  6. Test maintenance. Make a small change to a definition or hypothesis and observe how many downstream proofs require edits. This reveals more about long-term cost than the first successful compilation.
  7. Ask another reviewer to read the script. Compare whether a teammate can understand the proof structure, reproduce the build, and identify the trusted assumptions.
  8. Choose the ecosystem, not the single winning proof. Consider library trajectory, support channels, release cadence, training availability, and the people who will maintain the work for several years.

Installation, support, and learning resources

Lean

Lean Community materials provide a browser trial for quick experiments, installation instructions for Linux, Windows, and macOS, tutorials, games, API documentation, Zulip support, and GitHub-based project resources. The Lean 4 tutorial identifies Apache 2.0 licensing and foundations in the Calculus of Constructions with inductive types. Use the version specified by your target Mathlib project rather than blindly installing the newest release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coq/Rocq

The cited Coq repository provides installation and documentation links. Because the available material does not give one consolidated current hardware table, consult the release-specific instructions and the requirements of the libraries used by your development. Confirm whether the project documentation says Coq, Rocq, or both, and match the terminology in issue trackers and build files.

Isabelle

Isabelle publishes downloadable packages for Linux, Windows, and macOS, along with documentation, mailing lists, and the Archive of Formal Proofs. The Isabelle2025 guidance of 4 GB RAM and 2 cores for small experiments is a reasonable starting point; larger applications are listed at 8 GB/4 cores, 16 GB/8 cores, and 64 GB/16 cores for the four workload categories above. Check the current Isabelle2025-2 release information when starting a new installation.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by popularity

Popularity is not established here by a comparable primary statistic, and it does not tell you whether the required theorem or program already has a usable library. Choose on project fit and maintenance capacity.

Ignoring version compatibility

Lean, Mathlib, Coq/Rocq libraries, and Isabelle theories evolve. Pin the versions used by examples and continuous integration, then upgrade deliberately. When an imported theorem or tactic is missing, first check the version and object-logic assumptions before rewriting the proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing syntax instead of logic

Lean and Coq/Rocq both use dependent-type foundations, but their languages and ecosystems remain different. Isabelle/HOL’s higher-order logic is different again. A superficial syntax comparison can hide that a definition, induction principle, or automation strategy has changed.

Starting without a library plan

Identify the library modules, theories, or APIs your project needs before selecting an assistant. A system that has the right existing abstractions can reduce months of foundational work.

Underestimating team knowledge

The best assistant for an individual experiment may be the wrong one for a group. Count reviewer familiarity, teaching material, build expertise, and the cost of onboarding a replacement maintainer.

Treating a browser trial as a production setup

A browser trial is useful for testing notation and a small theorem. Production work still needs a pinned local toolchain, reproducible builds, source control, and a documented upgrade policy.

A practical selection checklist

  • Do you need one language for functional programming, definitions, and proofs? Lean deserves the first evaluation.
  • Does the project already contain Coq/Rocq proofs, certified algorithms, extraction, or dependent-type libraries? Stay with Coq/Rocq unless migration benefits clearly exceed the rewrite cost.
  • Are the required theories written in higher-order logic, or does your team rely on Isabelle’s structured documents and automation? Evaluate Isabelle/HOL first.
  • Which assistant has the definitions and lemmas your project needs today, not merely a promising roadmap?
  • Which version can your build and continuous-integration system support for the next year?
  • Who will review proofs, maintain libraries, and teach new contributors?
  • Can you complete the representative pilot without inventing a local framework that the ecosystem does not support?

If the checklist leaves two candidates, run the parallel exercise and make the decision from recorded evidence. If it leaves one, the ecosystem and team constraints have already answered the question.

Bottom line

Lean is the strongest general starting point for Mathlib-centered mathematics and for people who want theorem proving and functional programming together. Coq/Rocq is the practical choice for established dependent-type developments and certified-programming workflows built around Coq tooling. Isabelle/HOL is the practical choice for higher-order-logic projects, structured theories, mature automation, and teams already invested in Isabelle. The right proof assistant is the one whose logic, libraries, tools, and community align with the work you must maintain—not the one that wins an abstract popularity contest.
