To check whether a lazy-minted NFT is on-chain, find the listing’s blockchain, contract address, and token ID, then look up that exact contract and token on the matching blockchain explorer. Compare the contract address with one published by the project through an official channel. A listing page, collection name, or image alone does not establish that the specific NFT has an on-chain record.
What “lazy minted” tells you—and what it doesn’t
Lazy minting historically let a creator prepare an NFT without immediately recording it on a blockchain. As OpenSea explains, “Historically, creators used lazy minting to create items that were not on-chain until they were sold or transferred.” The description refers to how an item was created; it does not tell you whether that particular token is on-chain now.

OpenSea says that, effective October 3, 2023, users could no longer create new items with its lazy-minting tool. Items made with the tool earlier remained available to buy, sell, and transfer, but OpenSea says they would no longer be editable. This is specific to OpenSea’s tool, not a claim about every marketplace or minting method. See OpenSea’s explanation of NFT minting.

On the item page, record three details: the blockchain, the contract address, and the token ID. On OpenSea, these are shown in the About and Blockchain details areas. Its item-page guide also explains how to review Activity for past owners, sales, transfers, and original minting information.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Blockchain: The network on which to look for the record.
- Contract address: The address of the NFT contract; this distinguishes the contract from other projects with similar names.
- Token ID: The identifier for the individual token within that contract.
Keep all three together. A token ID by itself is not enough to identify the intended asset, and the same-looking item title or artwork can appear under a different contract.
Check the contract and token in the matching explorer
- Open the explorer for the listing’s blockchain. Do not search a record on a different network. OpenSea gives Etherscan for Ethereum, Polygonscan for Polygon, and BaseScan for Base as examples of explorers used to look up transaction information. Its transaction-hash guide describes how to locate and follow transaction identifiers.
- Search for the contract address. Check that the address you enter is exactly the one shown on the listing, including every character.
- Look for the token ID under that contract. The relevant evidence is a record for the specific token, not simply a contract or a token with a matching name elsewhere.
- Follow any transaction hash shown in the item’s history. Confirm that the transaction is on the stated chain and relates to the asset you are checking. A transaction hash is a unique identifier for a transaction; it is not by itself proof that a listing’s claims about the creator or artwork are true.
The identifiers used in this check align with OpenSea’s NFT lookup documentation, which describes looking up an NFT by blockchain, contract address, and token ID and returning metadata and ownership information. An API result can help corroborate the item details, but it is not a substitute for checking the underlying chain record.

Confirm that the contract belongs to the intended project
Find the project’s contract address through its official website or social accounts, and compare it character by character with the address on the listing. OpenSea recommends this comparison because scam tokens can use similar names and symbols. Its guidance on checking token legitimacy explains why an address is more useful than a familiar-looking name.

Compare multiple listings without relying on the artwork
When comparing purported copies or listings, check whether they point to the same asset identifiers and whether the contract matches the project’s official source.
| What to compare | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Blockchain | Whether the listings refer to the same network. |
| Contract address | Whether they refer to the same NFT contract; verify it against an official project source. |
| Token ID | Whether they refer to the same individual token within that contract. |
| Transaction and activity history | What recorded minting, transfers, sales, and ownership history are shown for the item. |
A matching picture or title does not show that two listings point to the same contract and token.

Understand what an on-chain record proves
A record for the contract and token ID supports the narrow conclusion that a token exists under that contract on that chain. It does not, on its own, prove that the seller created the artwork, that the artwork is authentic, or that the project is reputable. Treat the chain lookup, the project’s official contract information, and the item’s activity history as separate checks.
