Layer is a Google Sheets add-on that its Product Hunt listing describes as “Powerful Collaboration on Top of Google Sheets.” It is built around sharing parts of a sheet, monitoring and approving changes, and syncing data from other sources. The Product Hunt page lists ten alternatives, but that list is a discovery starting point, not a ranking, and it does not show that any of those products matches Layer’s specific features. This guide explains what Layer covers, what each alternative is positioned for, and what to check before you shortlist any of them.
Which Layer this article covers
This article covers the Google Sheets add-on listed on Product Hunt. The listing describes it as an add-on that gives teams tools to improve efficiency and data quality in Google Sheets processes, and says the product launched in 2022.

Searches for “Layer” also return unrelated products, including a planner, an AI product called Layer AI, and a product named Layers. None of those is covered here, and their features, reviews, or alternatives should not be attributed to the Google Sheets add-on.
Recommended Free Tools
According to the listing, Layer is meant for four jobs:
#1 Best Overall
- The Google Workspace Bible: [14 in 1] The Ultimate All in One Guide from Beginner to Advanced Including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Every Other App from the Suite
- ABIS BOOK
- Sharing parts of a Google Sheets file with other people.
- Monitoring and reviewing changes made to sheets.
- Approving changes.
- Syncing data from different sources.
Spreadsheet-centred collaboration with controlled updates is therefore the clearest use case the listing supports. The listing does not explain how deep each control goes or how far the sync reaches.
The ten alternatives on the Product Hunt list
Product Hunt’s “Looking beyond Layer?” section names ten products. Only five of them come with a category description, and those descriptions are the listing’s own framing:
| Alternative | Category stated on the Product Hunt listing |
|---|---|
| Google Sheets | Familiar spreadsheet |
| Equals | Not stated on the listing |
| Fuelfinance | Finance teams |
| Superjoin | Not stated on the listing |
| Sheetgo | Spreadsheet automation |
| Quadratic | Not stated on the listing |
| Pane | Not stated on the listing |
| Airboxr | Not stated on the listing |
| Row Zero | Not stated on the listing |
| Retable | Not stated on the listing |
The same framing paragraph also mentions Coda for docs-as-apps and Airtable for a flexible database with AI workflows. Neither appears in the ten-item list, so treat them as separate candidates to check directly rather than as part of the listed set.
Rank #2
The list is not a verified ranking. The listing does not establish that any of these products supports Layer’s sharing, approval, monitoring, or syncing functions in the same way, so each name is a lead to investigate rather than an equivalent.
How to narrow the shortlist
Use the framing column above to group candidates by the type of work you need, then test each shortlisted product against the four checks below.
Workflow fit
Decide whether the team should stay inside Google Sheets or move work into a broader app, a database, or a finance tool. The listing’s framing points to Google Sheets for a familiar spreadsheet, Fuelfinance for finance teams, and Coda or Airtable for teams that want an app or database structure.
Rank #3
Change controls
Confirm that the review, approval, and change-monitoring steps your process needs are supported. Ask who can approve a change, whether approvals are recorded, and whether reviewers can see what changed. The listing names these controls for Layer but does not describe how they work, so check them in a live trial.

List the sources that must connect and the direction and frequency of syncing you need. A tool that moves data in one direction on a schedule may not fit a process that needs live two-way updates. Verify this for each candidate, because the listing does not describe sync behaviour for any product.
Automation and scale
Decide whether you need spreadsheet automations, reporting, or a different data-analysis setup. Sheetgo is framed around spreadsheet automation, while Quadratic and Row Zero are not described on the listing, so the category question needs a direct answer from each product’s own documentation.

When the listing was captured in 2026, Layer showed a 5.0 rating from 7 reviews and 273 followers. These are platform figures. Seven reviews is too small a sample to describe typical customer experience, and a follower count does not measure adoption or reliability. Neither figure is a basis for ranking Layer against the alternatives.
What remains unverified
The Product Hunt listing does not establish the following. Confirm each point with the vendor before making a purchase decision:
- Current pricing and plan limits for Layer and for each alternative.
- Which data sources Layer connects to, and how often it syncs.
- Any independent testing, customer outcomes, or reliability evidence beyond the platform metadata above.
Ratings, follower counts, the alternatives list, and product features all change over time. Check the live Product Hunt page and each product’s own website before you finalise a shortlist.
