Small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs on average, but size cannot predict how long an individual dog will live or when it will become a senior. Breed, health, body condition, mobility, and medical history all matter. Use lifespan estimates to inform conversations with a veterinarian—not as a personal forecast.
How does lifespan differ by size?
Large clinical datasets show a broad pattern: average life expectancy tends to rise as dog size decreases. The figures below come from one US veterinary-record study, not a prediction for any particular breed or dog.

| Size group | Life expectancy at birth |
|---|---|
| Giant | 9.51 years |
| Large | 11.51 years |
| Medium | 12.70 years |
| Small | 13.53 years |
| Toy | 13.36 years |
These estimates were calculated from records at more than 1,000 Banfield Pet Hospitals for 2013–2019 and published in 2023. They show a general size-related pattern, not a strict step-by-step increase: the small-dog estimate is slightly higher than the toy-dog estimate. Size categories and the study population affect the numbers, so a breed-specific estimate and a veterinarian’s assessment are more relevant to an individual dog. The published study and its methods provide the full context.

It also found that body size was negatively correlated with lifespan—that is, larger dogs tended to have shorter lives. The study did not find a significant lifespan difference between purebred and mixed-breed dogs in that cohort. These findings describe clinic populations, not all dogs. Do large dogs age faster, and when is a dog a senior?
There is no single age at which every dog becomes a senior, and the available evidence does not establish a universal dog-to-human age conversion or a precise age when large dogs reach each aging milestone. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says senior status varies by species and breed. Its 2023 senior-care resource uses the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan through end of life as a planning definition, rather than a biological cutoff. A dog with a shorter estimated lifespan may therefore enter senior-focused care at a different age than one expected to live longer.
AAHA’s life-stage framework divides canine life into puppy, young adult, mature adult, senior, and end of life. These categories are meant to support healthcare that changes as a dog’s needs change—not to label every dog by the same birthday. AAHA’s 2019 Canine Life Stage Guidelines describe this approach as a basis for an evolving, lifelong healthcare strategy.

How do size and age relate to health?
Age-related disease patterns vary with size. An analysis of Dog Aging Project data found that the relationship between age and lifetime prevalence differed by size for several disease categories, including ocular, cardiac, orthopedic, ear, nose and throat, and cancer conditions. Adjusting the analysis for sex, purebred status, and geographic region made little difference to the reported patterns. These are population-level associations: they do not diagnose an individual dog, and neither large nor small dogs are protected from these conditions. The Dog Aging Project analysis explains the findings.
Body condition is another relevant factor. In Banfield’s 2013–2019 clinical-record dataset, estimated life expectancy was 11.71 years for obese dogs (body condition score, or BCS, 5/5), 13.18 years for dogs at ideal condition (BCS 3/5), and 13.14 years for overweight dogs (BCS 4/5). These are observational estimates, not proof that a particular diet or product changes lifespan. A veterinarian can help assess weight, muscle condition, and health conditions together. The full Banfield study reports these estimates and its methods.

What care should owners compare?
There is no universal large-dog or small-dog care checklist. Use size as one planning factor, alongside breed, life stage, and the dog’s own health and function.
Preventive care and life stage
Ask your veterinarian to tailor preventive care as your dog grows and ages. AAHA’s life-stage guidance covers safety and lifestyle, behavior, nutrition, parasite control, vaccination, dental health, reproduction, breed-specific conditions, and baseline diagnostics. Which areas need attention—and when—depends on the individual dog.

Mobility and daily function
Notice changes in how your dog moves and whether they interfere with daily activities. Discuss new or worsening mobility problems with a veterinarian. An access aid such as a ramp may help some dogs, but it is not a substitute for assessing the cause of a change in mobility.
Weight, muscle condition, and other health concerns
Track body condition and muscle condition as well as weight, particularly as your dog ages. A veterinarian can consider these together with existing conditions and recommend an appropriate care plan.

Symptoms and medical history
Size and age can be associated with different patterns in groups of dogs, but an individual dog’s symptoms and history are what matter when deciding whether it needs evaluation. Share changes you notice with your veterinarian rather than assuming they are simply part of aging or a predictable consequence of size.
